What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

I had a fair amount of success with my best track, and best driver series, so I thought I would start another one, but non-sports related. You can't really use stats to support your opinion in this one, even total box office can't be used since the price of tickets keep going up, it isn't really an accurate reflection of how good a movie actually is. To get the list, I just copied the top 100 list created by AFI. Some really good movies do not make the top 64 on their list, and some of the movies I never heard of, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be inlcuded, and the ones I thought should make the list still aren't here. Some noteables that are missing include, Saving Privat Ryan, Shawshank Redembtion, Forrest Gump, Good Fellas, Silence of the Lambs, and Disney's Fantasia.

So here you go, I kept the list in the original order 1-64, then made the top 4 1seeds, the next 4 2 seeds, and so on. Then to figure out the groups, a number the 1 seeds 1-4, then the 2 seeds 4-1, and grouped the movies using a snake method throughout. Not the most scientific way, and it involved the least amount of work for me, but it works.

The first round has some interesting matchups, is Schindler's List better than Rocky, ET vs King Kong, 2001: A Space Oddyssy vs Lord of the Rings, Psycho vs. West Side Story,

Be sure to let others know about this, the driver series resulted in a bunch of posts, but the actual votes were in the teens for most rounds.

Keep up the good work. My senior year of high school, I took a class that was only offered the 1st 2 hrs, or last 2 hrs. of school. It was called "The art of the Cinema." What a class. That was the first opportunity I had to watch most of these movies for the 1st time. 14 of these movie I voted for I saw in that class.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

Pardon my language, but holy crap! That's quite a list you've generated.

So, with input from Mom (due to not having seen several of the choices), here are our picks (with random comments added):

East

#1 Citizen Kane (1941)

#2 Schindler's List (1993)
#3 Vertigo (1958)
#4 Sunset Boulevard (1950) --chosen by default due to not having seen the other movie.  Mom's assessment: It was weird.
#5 Rear Window (1954)
#6 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
#7 The Sound of Music (1965)
#8 The Godfather Part II (1974)

West

#1 The Godfather (1972)
#2 Lawrence of Arabia (1962) --Good only if you have the complete version, not the edited version.
#3 North by Northwest (1959)
#4 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
#5  A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) --  by default.  Mom's assessment:  Overacted, a la New York.
#6 The Grapes of Wrath (1940)   --tough choice, hated them both.
#7 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

#8 The Maltese Falcon (1941)

North

#1 Casablanca (1942)
#2 Gone with the Wind (1939)
#3 MASH (1970)
#4 Psycho (1960) --okay, this one is pretty weird too, but it beats the heck out of dancing gangs. That was just silly.
#5 It Happened One Night (1934) --One of Grandma's favorites.
#6 Some Like It Hot (1959)
#7 High Noon (1952)
#8 Apocalypse Now (1979) --Mom says, "Oh, God. What a choice."  (...and not nicely.)

South

#1 Sullivan's Travels (1941)
#2 Singin' in the Rain (1952)
#3 The Searchers (1956)

#4 Star Wars (1977)
#5 It's a Wonderful Life (1946) --One of my sister's favorites.
#6 The Philadelphia Story (1940)
#7 The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)  --tough choice. Both good movies.
#8 The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) --Now that dang whistling is going to be stuck in my head all day.  Thanks a lot.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

bronco - Lot's of movies could have been included. Alien wasn't on the list I used to create the seeds, The Shining is missing as well. Stalag 17 is a movie I will watch whenever I stumble across it on tv, but not here either. Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian didn'tmake the cut either, but are great movies you can watch over and over again. Planet of the Apes missed out as well. Man, I should have made this a field of 128 instead of just 64.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

Great idea for a blog vote-off, Section.  I was about to partake, but couldn't bring myself to toss To Kill a Mockingbird or The Sound of Music in the first round, so I'll watch this one from the proverbial pit pass of life:)
