What is the best movie ever made? Round 2

Posted on: November 5, 2008 11:39 am

OK, time to move onto round 2 of the Movie Vote-Off. One of the 2 seeds did not move on, only 1 3 seed won it's matchup. There was a tie between Schindler's List and Rocky, so it was up to me to cast the deciding vote. It wasn't an easy choice, which probably explains why it wound up as a tie. I chose Rocky of Schindler's List since it is one of my favorite movies. Schindlers List was a great film, but ultimately Rocky was a feel good story going against a very depressing movie. There were some oddities in the last round which force me to come up with some rules.

1. Please vote for every matchup. It makes it easier for me to keep track of the votes.
2. When making your selections please copy the matchups into your response and either Bold the movie you prefer, or delete the one not getting your vote. This way the movies are in a list order. If you just type in your choices one after the other it is a bit more difficult for me. Also, if you are using the delete method, please don't delete the seed number. If you just want to list the numbers that is fine as well.

This isn't a rule, but if there is a tough choice, feel free to comment about it. It makes it interesting to know the reason you chose one over the other. You can comment on all of the matchups if you so desire.

Here is a link to the last round.  http://www.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs

What is the best movie ever made? Round 2

Round 2 comes to a close with a few upsets. Rocky unfortunately suffered a 10th round knockout losing out to Citizen Kane. E.T. lost out to Rear Window, although in my opinion King Kong should have beaten E.T.The Bridge over the River Kwai beat out Singin in the Rain as well. Some of the contests were decided by a single vote, thus proving that every vote is important. (next round if you don't cast a vote in each matchup, your ballot will be considered null and void)

What is the best movie ever made? Round 2

East --
No. 1,  Citizen Kane wins a unanimous decision over Rocky. Rocky is possibly the movie of its generation; Kane is probably the movie of its century.
No. 14,  Jaws
No. 6,  ET
No. 9,  One Flew over the Cuckoo's

West --
No. 1 The Godfather
No. 2 Lawrence of Arabia
No. 8 The Maltese Falcon (this was a very tough selection)
No. 6 The Grapes of Wrath (reality over fantasy)

North --
No. 1 Casablanca
No. 2 Gone With the Wind (good burning shots in both films)
No. 4 Psycho
No. 6 Some Like It Hot

South --
No 14, The Deer Hunter
No 2, Singin' in the Rain
No. 4 Star Wars
No. 6, Chinatown

I have to add that I prefer Shane to any of the 8 films in the South matchup.

Sorry I missed the first round, not that my vote would have made any difference anyhow. I  would have voted for all the winners except
;     these five---

Shane   over   It's a Wonderfull Life

The Seachers   over   Deer Hunter

Bonnie and Clyde     over    Grapes of Wrath  - just a personal favorite  and I understand  Grapes winning.

King Kong    over     ET-- and this one puzzles me greatly.??

Sullivan's Travels over Raging Bull-------------  I always thought Veronica Lake was the most beautifull woman I ever saw untill maybe Ursula Andress.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 2

East

#1 Citizen Kane (1941) vs.#15 Rocky (1976) CK is a great film, Rocky is punch drunk.
#4 Sunset Boulevard (1950) vs.#14 Jaws (1975)  Let's hear it for the shark!
#6 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) vs.#12 Rear Window (1954)  Suspense at its finest.
#7 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) vs.#9 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) What's this? "The Battle of the Birds"?

West

#1 The Godfather (1972) vs.#13 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)  Was made an offer I couldn't refuse - had to vote this way.
#2 Lawrence of Arabia (1962) vs.#12 A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)  Very few films are made like LOA anymore
#3 The Wizard of Oz (1939) vs.#8 The Maltese Falcon (1941) They are both crappy flicks - vote "ugh" twice.
#6 The Grapes of Wrath (1940) vs.#7 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)  Still a great film about politics and still very true today.

North

#1 Casablanca (1942) vs.#14 MASH (1970)
#2 Gone with the Wind (1939) vs.#8 Apocalypse Now (1979) Don't need to be reminded how strupid and crappy that war was.
#4 Psycho (1960) vs.#7 High Noon (1952)  Horror films bore me to tears.
#5 On the Waterfront (1954) vs.#6 Some Like It Hot (1959) Curtis and Lemmon were great!

South

#1 Raging Bull (1980) vs.#14 The Deer Hunter (1978) See above for double "No".
#2 Singin' in the Rain (1952) vs.#9 The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) "Kwai" didn't happen like that. Bridge is still standing.
#4 Star Wars (1977) vs.#7 All About Eve (1950)  Because of the ground breaking special effects
#5 It's a Wonderful Life (1946) vs.#6 Chinatown (1974)  Didn't like either film the first time, wouldn't waste time again.

Sorry I didn't get to vote in the first round. Some great films bit the dust there.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 2

East

#1 Citizen Kane (1941)  Tough match-up; just because they are such different types of movies.

14 Jaws (1975)  --Ditto above comment.
12 Rear Window (1954) --both good, but liked this one better
#7 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) --Gregory Peck wins hands down.

West

13 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)--Really, really liked both. LOTR wins for "amazing" factor.
#2 Lawrence of Arabia (1962) --even though Peter O-Toole is a pinhead. (Mom's assessment.)
8 The Maltese Falcon (1941)--The Wizard loses it's luster after airing every year for forty years.
7 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

North

#1 Casablanca (1942)  A classic.  Also thought the characters were better in MASH the series vs. MASH the movie.
#2 Gone with the Wind (1939)  Despite Scarlett.
#7 High Noon (1952)
#6 Some Like It Hot (1959) The humor was greatly appreciated.

South

#1 Raging Bull (1980)

#2 Singin' in the Rain (1952)  Again tough to choose because both have good qualities, but are so different from each other. The tap dancing won.
#4 Star Wars (1977) Who wants to watch Bette Davie when you can watch Han Solo?
#5 It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

What is the best movie ever made? Round 2

Fighten - Not sure if you are checking in on this again, but I included a link to the first round matchups if you wanted to see what they were. You can still post your picks if you want, but it won't effect the outcome. I would still be interested in see what choice people make.
