Onto round 3. I just want to reiterate a rule I made up for the last round. Please vote for all of the matchups. If you don't like either movie, just pick the lesser of two evils.

As we move along the choices get harder and harder.

Can Jaws take a bite out of Citizen Kane?

Will the Mockingbird break through the Rear Window or just break it's neck?

Can the Godfather withstand the Wrath of some Grapes?

Will the Wizard have enough brains, heart and courage when facing Laurence of Arabia?

Sorry couldn't think of any witty statements for the North. Feel free to add any you can think of.

Will the Raging Bull collapse before the Bridge over the River Kwai?

Can Star Wars "Force" it's way past the holiday classic It's a Wonderful Life?

East

#1 Citizen Kane (1941) vs.#14 Jaws (1975)
#7 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) vs.#12 Rear Window (1954)

West

#1 The Godfather (1972) vs.#6 The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
#2 Lawrence of Arabia (1962) vs.#3 The Wizard of Oz (1939)

North

#1 Casablanca (1942) vs.#7 High Noon (1952)
#2 Gone with the Wind (1939) vs.#6 Some Like It Hot (1959)

South

#1 Raging Bull (1980) vs.#9 The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
#4 Star Wars (1977) vs.#5 It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

What is the best movie ever made? Sweet 16

Round 3 is over.
To Kill a Mockingbird, and the Godfather obliterated their opponents. In a surprising upset the Bridge was too much for the #1 seeded Raging Bull. My favorite Star Wars squeaked by one of my holiday favorites, It's a Wonderful Life.

#1 Citizen Kane (1941) 18 vs.#14 Jaws (1975) 11
#7 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) 25 vs.#12 Rear Window (1954) 4

#1 The Godfather (1972) 26 vs.#6 The Grapes of Wrath (1940) 3
#2 Lawrence of Arabia (1962) 9 vs.#3 The Wizard of Oz (1939) 20

#1 Casablanca (1942) 19 vs.#7 High Noon (1952) 10
#2 Gone with the Wind (1939) 23 vs.#6 Some Like It Hot (1959) 6

#1 Raging Bull (1980) 13 vs.#9 The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) 16
#4 Star Wars (1977) 15 vs.#5 It's a Wonderful Life (1946) 14

Next go around is going to be comedians. After that, I will get into the movie genres. I figured a google search for say, the top 100 sci-fi movies should get me a good list. You seem to be a big movie buff though, maybe after I get the list, I could send you a copy via email to see if any there are any glaring omissions. I should be able to get the top 64 from the top 100 lists out there. I don't think I would need to expand the competition to include 128 movies, if I do though, I would hold two 1st rounds.

What is the best movie ever made? Sweet 16

I most humbly disagree with a few of my fellow movie fans. I am a 40-something who owns The Wizard of Oz on VHS and who watches it at least a couple of times during the holidays every year when so many cable channels have it on that you can't possibly miss it. The Wizard of Oz is a timeless story, and, for the time it was made, it was state of the art filmmaking. There are parts of this movie that still bring up nightmares I had as a kid (that green-faced witch and those damned flying monkeys!!), but it is one of my touchstones from childhood, too, a movie that reminds me of when everything was right in the world. And the mythos behind this movie and its making is fascinating.

Lennon - Don't feel bad about missing the previous rounds. It is hard to know everybody on this site, and there are probably some great blogs out there that few people know about.

After this I will be doing a round of best comedians, but after that I will be re-visiting movies, and have competitions based on various genres. Some great movies didn't make this list, most noteably a bunch of comedies, so doing this by genre would be interesting as well. That should take me through most of next year unless I run them concurrently by posting a new blog each day for a different genre, but that sounds like a lot of work..

Agree 100% with StgrLee on Wizard of Oz.  I challenge anybody over age 20 (especially straight male) to view it all the way through.  Can't be done -- it's unwatchable.
