What is the best movie ever made? Elite 8

Ok, I think I had a record turnout the last round. Thanks to the 29 people who voted, I also enjoy reading the commentary from individuals, so keep that up.

We are down to two movies from each area, next round East meets West, and it is the North vs. the South.

The Mockingbird smashed through the rear window, will he take a dump on Citizen Kane?
Will the Wizard put a hit on the Godfather?
Will Casablanca be Gone With the WInd
Can the Bridge withstand the forces from a Galaxy Far, Far Away?

Since we have a holiday weekend I will keep the voting open until late next week, Thurs or Friday depending on how many votes are still coming in. Be sure to tell others, each round I seem to pick up more and more people.

East
#1 Citizen Kane (1941) vs.#7 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)

West
#1 The Godfather (1972) vs.#3 The Wizard of Oz (1939)

North
#1 Casablanca (1942) vs.#2 Gone with the Wind (1939)

South
#4 Star Wars (1977) vs.#9 The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

We are at the end of another round. One of the #1 seeds will no longer be with us. The Mockingbird knocked off Citizen Kane in a close upset.

#1 Citizen Kane (1941) 12 vs.#7 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) 14

#1 The Godfather (1972) 17 vs.#3 The Wizard of Oz (1939) 9

#1 Casablanca (1942) 15 vs.#2 Gone with the Wind (1939) 11

#4 Star Wars (1977) 19 vs.#9 The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) 7

Onto the final four.

I voted for Casablanca and with all due respect, sir, you don't know poop about poop.

I liked it not because of the reasons you cited but in spite of them.  Plus that's the way people talked when the movie was made.

I guess you liked "Oh fiddle-dee-dee."

The AFI Top 100 had Casblanca at #2 and GWTW at #4.  So I'm not saying "no way [GWTW] should win'" but I disagree with your assertion that "no way [Casablanca] should win."

Although I wil defend to my death your right to say it.

catfish - Star Wars hasn't faced the 1, 2, and 3 seeds from this division. #3 The Searchers was beat by #14 The Deer Hunter in the first round. #2 Singing in the Rain was knocked out by #9 Bridge on on the River Kwai in the second round, and the #1 seed Raging Bull was knocked out by Bridge in the third round. Can Bridge continue as a Cinderella story, or will Star Wars take it out. This Star Wars is the first one only, not all 6 movies.

Now there's a great idea for a blog or thread. Take two famous lines from two great films and change them around so the film goes in a different direction. Quite challenging, actually. Would take some creative thinking.

What am I thinking? "Creative thinking" on the NASCAR Board? Both of those words are alien to all NASCAR fans.

(Said with exquisite scarcasm)

I just figured out why everyone is voting for "Casablanca". They think Boogie (pun intended) is a great actor - pshaw!!!! The "Hump" isn't all that great, he was just in a period where there were few actors who were good and gangsters were very popular. Another reason why "Casablanca" is getting so many votes is because of that dumb line, "Play it again, Sam", and that isn't even the way the line(s) were spoken. That and the doe-eyed look she gives Hogy Carmichael. Guess the line, "Round up the usual suspects" is also a reason. But the real trite clincher is "Here's lookin' at you, kid." What a stupid line!

OK, now that I've gotten that off my chest, "Casablanca" isn't all that bad a film, but no way it should win. It's moving through the field on a false rep and no way is it better than GWTW.

Didn't win as many Oscars, didn't rake in as much revenue, had nowhere near the production values, and no Rhett Butler saying, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Can you imagine Rhett sayinbg to Scarlett as he walks out the door, "Here's looking at you, kid." Or Bogart saying to Hepburn, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Casablanca is a sob story for the older generation and does not stand up to an epic like "Gone With The Wind".

Anyone who votes for "Casablanca" doesn't know poop about poop.

I don't necessarily agree with your choices, but the commentary is highly amusing!

how did #4 Star Wars beat out the top 3 seeds in this bracket ? I don't even know the other 3 seeds but wow. I am a Star Wars fan mind you, but what a string of upsets. I think Lucas ruined the whole legacy of the original SW with the prequels. Only the last one was decent to above average. The second one was pointless and murky and the first one had some ok parts but overall - terrible. They should've never killed off Darth Maul. He being a nuisance in the remaining 2 movies could've saved them from being lame.
