What is the best movie ever made? Final Four

Posted on: December 5, 2008 7:54 am

Here we are at the final four, minus one of the 1 seeds. Citizen Kane was eliminated, losing out to the Mockingbird by 2 votes.

This of course sets up an easy tagline for one of the matchups.

Does the Godfather have what it takes To Kill a Mockingbird, or will he get some poop in the eye?

The other one isn't so easy. But both movies have bar scenes in them, although I don't recall anyones arm getting lopped off in Casablanca. If someone can come up with a good tagline, feel free to post it.

#1 The Godfather (1972) vs.#7 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)

#1 Casablanca (1942) vs.#4 Star Wars (1977)

Voting will stay open until next Friday.

What is the best movie ever made? Final Four

This is an easy one ...

The Godfather is a classic and it wins a tight battle over To Kill a Mockingbird.  The book would be a different story ... but Godfather is a magnificent movie with many timeless actors.

And in the other semi, Casablanca wins running away.  The story is timeless ...

Anyone notice what these movies has in common?

By the way, I still like A Beautiful Mind for a modern classic and for suspense ... Seven is chilling ... I love Kevin Spacey!

What is the best movie ever made? Final Four

5. Wizard Of Oz (The stuff that childhood and adult dreams are made of?)

4. Lawrence Of Arabia (One of the reason Cinemascope and Technicolor were invented)

3 Gone With The Wind (The greatest love story ever told)

2. The Godfather (The first modern day movie to be realised into a classic film)

1 Casablanca (The greatest on screen romantic experience… To this day I still hope Rick gets on the plane).

What is the best movie ever made? Final Four

#7 to Kill a Mockingbird- Atticus takes out the Corlione family

#1 Casablanca- Although Star Wars helped give birth to a new era of Special effects, I think Casblanca still stands the test of time; so lets Play it again Sam!

This time I have to go with the #1 seeds for both. Don Corleone over Atticus Finch and Meeester Reeek Blaine over Luke and R2D2.

Be sure to come to my blog and vote for the "worst song ever" again. I posted a new group of contenders tonight. Thanks Section!

What is the best movie ever made? Final Four

Man, and I thought this was tough before. Here goes.

#1 The Godfather (1972)

#1 Casablanca (1942)

The Godfather is remembered more than To Kill A Mockingbird. Both are great stories, but The Godfather is more powerful, and it essentially revived the genre of the "gangster" film, a genre which we still see today. Before, it was James Cagney, and it was somewhat more benign. Then, along came Al Pacino and blew the whole thing wide open, stylistically and from a violence standpoint, realistically portraying an era in gangsterhood and leading to such movies as Goodfellas and Casino. And, as I posted in an entry earlier in the tournament, this movie launched careers for several actors and empires for Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo.

Casablanca, to me, should have been AFI's Number One movie of all time (that's a hint of what my vote will be for the winner of this tournament, if it makes it to the Final). This movie is filmmaking at its absolute best. Great cast, great story, great music. This was Humphrey Bogart just beginning to hit his stride. From a cinematography standpoint, this movie set a noir standard. The use of light and dark, shadow and reflection is astounding. If you ever have the chance, and you haven't, see this movie in a theatre. Remember, though, don't get taken in and end up seeing a colorized version. Whoever colorized this film should be forced to sit and watch Plan 9 From Outer Space over and over and over and over . . .

What is the best movie ever made? Final Four

Sorry...going to have to go with the cinderella write in on this ballot and bring in "Rudy".  I am thinking the complete story of the under dog taking life by the horns and overcoming everything to play. What it has on those 4 you have listed would have to be truth. This actually happened, this was really accomplished. So please ... find it in your heart to give it some consideration.  Rudy accomplishes everyone's childhood dreams by not being the biggest or strongest but by putting his nose down and giving more heart that the rest of that team combined. So come on America, give Rudy one last blast of glory!
