Field of 64 - Comedians. Round 2

Posted on: January 12, 2009 10:26 am

Sorry, I am a little late tallying the votes, I will just adjust the schedule going forward accordingly. I will keep the voting open until next Tuesday morning to give everyone time to find this.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the last round, I had 45 votes, which I think is a record for one of these things. Tallying all those matchups can be a pain, but it gets easier for me this week. If you haven't voted before, no problem, all votes are welcomed, provided they follow the rules, see below.

Before we get to the results, I just wanted to reiterate the rules for this game.

A few rules that I would ask everyone to follow so that I am not pulling my hair out while running this thing.
1. Vote for all of the matchups. If you don't like either, or can't decide who you like better, flip a coin. When counting votes for 32 matchups, it is easier to know I tallied everything correctly if all matchups have the same number of votes.
2. You can bold your selection, or cross out the one you don't like, but keep your response in a list form, including the areas (east, west, etc.) Again, this just makes it easier for me to count up the votes
3. Not really a rule, but feel free to make comments on the matchups if you like. It makes for interesting reading.

Ok, now for the results of the last round, and my comments on the matchups.

#1 Woody Allen 31 #16 Elaine Boosler 14 - I would have picked Boosler
#2 Rodney Dangerfield 41 #15 David Letterman 4 - No brainer, the right guy won.
#3 Bob Newhart 30 #14 Flip Wilson 15 - This one is tough, but Newhart is the winner.
#4 Jonathan Winters 25 #13 Adam Sandler 20 - Winters was the right choice
#5 Buddy Hackett 36 #12 Gilbert Gottfried 9 - Hacket
#6 Bob Hope 28 #11 David Chappelle 17 - Thought Bob would have won in a bigger way
#7 Richard Lewis 13 #10 Billy Crystal 32 - Tough choice, but I like Crystal better
#8 Red Skelton 28 #9 Jim Carrey 17 - Skelton

#1 George Carlin 33 #16 Jeff Foxworthy 12 - No brainer, Carlin wins
#2 Chris Rock 35 #15 Andrew Dice Clay 10 - Rock wins, I never really liked Clay, he was a one trick pony in my opinion

#7 Andy Kaufman 25 #10 Gary Shandling 20

#3 Jerry Seinfeld 23 #14 Jackie Gleason 22 - I would have voted Gleason
#4 Sam Kinison 26 #13 Denis Leary 19 - Tough choice, I love them both, but Kinison I guess

#7 Jack Benny 37 #10 David Brenner 8 - Jack wins easily

#1 Richard Pryor 29 #16 Mel Brooks 16 - Pryor, not an easy choice
#2 Steve Martin 35 #15 Lewis Black 10 - I like Lewis Black, but Steve is funny in his own right
#3 Robin Williams 41 #14 Richard Belzer 4 - Robin wins easily
#4 Bill Hicks 27 #13 Richard Jeni 18 - Hicks
#5 Johnny Carson 41# #12 Jay Leno 4 - Carson, Leno pales in comparison

#7 Milton Berle 37 #10 Bill Maher 8 - Uncle Miltie wins easily

Field of 64 - Comedians. Round 2

OK, once again I am behind in tabulating the votes. Between working full time, having two kids, and taking college courses at night, and posting on the message boards, it is sometimes hard to squeeze in the time to tabulate the votes. The results are in, and one of the #1 seeds will not go onto the next round. Not only did he lose, but he lost BIG!

#1 Woody Allen 12 #10 Billy Crystal 25
#2 Rodney Dangerfield 31
#8 Red Skelton 6
#3 Bob Newhart 15 #6 Bob Hope 22
#4 Jonathan Winters 25
#5 Buddy Hackett 12

#1 George Carlin 32 #12 Henny Youngman 5
#2 Chris Rock 24 #8 Steven Wright 13
#3 Bill Cosby 32 #7 Andy Kaufman 5
#4 Don Rickles 28 #6 Albert Brooks 9

#1 Lenny Bruce 32 #8 Phyllis Diller 5
#2 Eddie Murphy 23 #7 Jack Benny 14
#3 Jerry Seinfeld 17 #6 Redd Foxx 20
#4 Sam Kinison 10 #5 Carol Burnett 27

#1 Richard Pryor 26 #11 George Burns 11
#2 Steve Martin 34 #8 Dennis Miller 3
#3 Robin Williams 27 #7 Milton Berle 10
#4 Bill Hicks 5 #5 Johnny Carson 32

Stay tuned, the sweet 16 round will be up soon.

Field of 64 - Comedians. Round 2

I'm late...I'm only hoping I can slide in under the wire.  If not, it's my own fault and I'll be more prompt next time.

#1 Woody Allen #10 Billy Crystal
#2 Rodney Dangerfield #8 Red Skelton  That's a tough one for me.
#3 Bob Newhart #6 Bob Hope  That one is brutally tough.  Love both these guys.
#4 Jonathan Winters #5 Buddy Hackett   The third match-up in this bracket that wasn't easy.

#1 George Carlin #12 Henny Youngman
#2 Chris Rock #8 Steven Wright
#3 Bill Cosby #7 Andy Kaufman
#4 Don Rickles #6 Albert Brooks  In this bracket, my choices were a lot about whose style I prefer.

#1 Lenny Bruce #8 Phyllis Diller
#2 Eddie Murphy #7 Jack Benny  Both great. Just a different style.
#3 Jerry Seinfeld #6 Redd Foxx
#4 Sam Kinison #5 Carol Burnett

#1 Richard Pryor #11 George Burns
#2 Steve Martin #8 Dennis Miller
#3 Robin Williams #7 Milton Berle
#4 Bill Hicks #5 Johnny Carson

Field of 64 - Comedians. Round 2

Hey, just wanted to add that I know that Hicks doesn't stand a chance against Carson and I'll most likely vote for Carson in the next round but so glad to see he made this list and got such respect to get a 4 seed.  For those unfamiliar with him, please rent one of his shows!  Probably the funniest of the "dark" comedians.

And you questioned my taste in music???  I should 1 star you for this alone (but I like you too much and just ignored the momentary mental lapse and 5 starred you anyway)

Yes, BuccinGator, I know most people hated Dennis on MNF, but I thought he was hysterical.  I suspect he was over most people's heads (present company excepted,of course) and that's why they didn't like him.  He was a thinking man's commentator, and let's face it, people don't want to think when they're watching football.  But thanks for the get-out-of-jail-free card.  :)
