Field of 64 Sci-Fi Movies - Round 1

Another competition has come to a close, and Bill Cosby apparently is the best comedian. At least according to cbs posters. Time for a new round to start.

Now, I am sure I will get some complaints about leaving off a certain movie, or about the matchups, or even the seeding. I try to be as fair as possible when creating these lists. I search the internet for top 100 lists of a certain topic. I try to find at least 5 different lists. I will then calculate an average position for each item on the list so I can get a more accurate seeding. I then take the first 64 in the list and assign them seeds. The top 4 are 1 seeds, 5-8 are 2 seeds etc. I then set the areas by listing 1,2,3,4,4,3,2,1 over and over until I reach the end. I will then sort the list by group, then seed, and matchup 16 against 1, 15 against 2, and so on and so forth. To prove my honesty, many people who know me, know I am a huge Star Wars fan. If you look at the seedings, you will see that Episode III Revenge of the Sith is a 14 seed, while the vastly inferior Episode VI Return of the Jedi garnered a 7 seed.

A few rules that I would ask everyone to follow so that I am not pulling my hair out while running this thing.
1. Vote for all of the matchups. If you don't like either, or can't decide who you like better, flip a coin. When counting votes for 32 matchups, it is easier to know I tallied everything correctly if all matchups have the same number of votes.
2. You can bold your selection, or cross out the one you don't like, but keep your response in a list form, including the areas (east, west, etc.) Again, this just makes it easier for me to count up the votes
3. Not really a rule, but feel free to make comments on the matchups if you like. It makes for interesting reading

So without further ado, here are the matchups. original matchups have been changed to remove some duplicates.

Field of 64 Sci-Fi Movies - Round 1

OK, hack, I updated it again. I can't believe some website mispelled Solaris. Man, some people will go to some great lengths to make me look bad. I didn't see the Terminator and Bride of Frankenstien duplicates though. I know I have Terminator 2, as well as the original.

This latest edit does have an interesting matchup with the final movie from the original trilogy of Star Wars against the final movie of the prequal trilogy. Personally, I would go with III over VI.

Mr. Mayor,

I think you need to go back ON the sauce...   Terminator is in twice, Solaris is in twice, but with different spellings.  Bride of Frankenstein twice...

Are your revisions in a different post?

OK, I fixed the duplication issue, unfortunately this totally destroys the original matchups since just about every movie has a different seed and group now. Sorry for the confusion. Looks like all the Star Wars movies are now in the Alpha and Beta quadrents, so no possiblity of an all Star Wars final four.

OK, guess everyone needs to hold off of voting until I correct the duplication issue. I thought I fixed them all.

Field of 64 Sci-Fi Movies - Round 1

Another great idea Section.  Love Sci-fi movies.  Let's get the party started.

Alpha:

#1 Star Wars Episode V: The best one of the six by far.
#2 2001: A Space Odyssey:  Liked the Iron Giant, but 2001 has so many things going on, plus we don't want to tick off Hal now do we.
#3 The Day the Earth Stood Still:  Absoulte classic.
#4 Brazil:  Surreal and wickedly dry humor.
#12 Contact:  Upset here by coin flip
#6 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial:  My son won't let me phone home If I don't vote for ET.  Also known as the Willie McGee story.
#7 A Clockwork Orange:  Weird and wonderful flick.
#9 Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan:  Hated stalker.  Wrath by default in spite of horrid acting.

Beta:

#1 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope:  Second best film in the series.
#15 The Time Machine:  The Matrix will wipe this one out in the vote probably, but for it's day, the effects were cool and H.G. Wells knew how to write a Sci-Fi tale.
#3 Terminator 2: Judgment Day:  2 was better than I anticipated.
#4 Close Encounters of the Third Kind:  I loved Independence Day, but Close is so dang good that it gets the vote here.
#5 The Terminator:  I'll be back, with more comments.
#11 Frankenstein:  Bride reminded me too much of someone I once knew.
#7 Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi:  Again close, but I guess I like Star Wars movies a bit better.
#8 Planet of the Apes:  Both are good, but Planet was better written and a bit more daring for its time.

Gamma:

#1 The Matrix:  Now I'll take Matrix.
#2 Aliens:  If War would have had Sigorney Weaver, it would have gotten my vote.
#3 Metropolis:  Now I'll go with the old 30's classic
#4 Planet of the Apes:  Which one. all of them.
#5 12 Monkeys:  Well acted and kept me on the edge.
#11 Soylent Green.  It's made of people you know.
#7 Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956):  I checked the back of everyones' heads for weeks after seeing this one as a
#9 V for Vendetta:  Got to go for the anti-gov theme here.

Delta:

#16 Tron:  I'll go for the video game here.
#2 Blade Runner:  Dark flick and great.
#3 The Terminator III:  Love the whole franchise.
#4 Back To The Future:  All of them
#12 Robocop:  Peter Weller was great.
#11 Night of the Living Dead:  Zombies!!!
#10 Dr. Strangelove or : How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb:  Bombs, politics, and satire plus an all-star cast.
#9 Young Frankenstein:  What big knockers you have there.
