Field of 64 - Sci-Fi Movies - Round 2

Posted on: May 27, 2009 9:42 am

Long overdue on tallying the results and getting round 2 up. A couple of surprises, at least in my opinion, in the last round with Back to the Future somehow beating War of the Worlds, and Jedi beating Sith. I added some comments to the round 1 results entry. Here is a link to the first round for anyone who missed it.

Not surprisingly, there were a few questions about movies that missed out, as well as which version of a particular movie made the list. If there are multiple versions of a movie, it is most likely the original, but feel free to use the version you liked better to make your decision.

A few rules that I would ask everyone to follow so that I am not pulling my hair out while running this thing.
1. Vote for all of the matchups. If you don't like either, or can't decide who you like better, flip a coin. When counting votes for 32 matchups, it is easier to know I tallied everything correctly if all matchups have the same number of votes.
2. You can bold your selection, or cross out the one you don't like, but keep your response in a list form, including the areas (east, west, etc.) Again, this just makes it easier for me to count up the votes
3. Not really a rule, but feel free to make comments on the matchups if you like. It makes for interesting reading

Here are the round two matchups. Hope you enjoy. Some interesting matchup, How does a Terminator fair against T-Rex, Apes vs. Monkeys, Star Wars vs. Star Trek.

Field of 64 - Sci-Fi Movies - Round 2

Aces Section!

Props for the great thread again!!

Here goes:

Alpha Quadrant
#1 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back vs.#10 Soylent Green   Easiest pick perhaps
#2 The Terminator vs.#8 Jurassic Park   yes, an interesting matchup.  Both visually amazing.  But robots over dinosaurs.  TRex would be no match for the Governator.
#3 Back To The Future vs.#6 Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) Classic sci-fi over kitch.
#4 Brazil vs.#5 The Thing Which version of the Thing?? Just love Brazil too much.  But if The Thing advances, please specify.

Beta Quadrant
#1 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope vs.#12 Ghostbusters I thought Sci-Fi was Star Trek the Original Series until this movie I stood in line for seven times at the age of 12.
#2 2001: A Space Odyssey vs.#11 Robocop Hate losing Robocop.  Fun flick.  Kubrick is a master.
#3 Metropolis   vs.#10 Night of the Living Dead   Living Dead would be a favorite in any horror poll.  Metropolis was groundbreaking and still solid if you are really into the history of cinema.
#4 Close Encounters of the Third Kind vs.#8 V for Vendetta Speilberg classic!

Gamma Quadrant
#1 The Matrix   vs.#8 Young Frankenstein kinda hate this one.  But the Matrix is a great sci-fi flick despite Keanu's inability to act.
#2 Aliens vs.#7 A Clockwork Orange   no fair!  Kubrick is a God.  Aliens is just such great fun for two solid hours.
#3 Terminator 2: Judgment Day vs.#6 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial In a "do I have to pick one?" I'll take the grown up flick for being more fun, regardless of the stupid, cheesy ending.
#4 Planet of the Apes vs.#5 12 Monkeys REALLY tough choice!  Apes is just great but Monkeys blew my mind when I saw it.

Delta Quadrant
#1 Alien vs.#13 The Time Machine Alien easy.
#2 Blade Runner vs.#11 Independence Day Again easy.  Any time.  Every day.
#3 The Day the Earth Stood Still vs.#8 The Fifth Element with an asterisk.  Yes, this is my pick if we are talking about the original version.   If its the remake from last year I go with Fifth Element easy.  Love classic movies.  groundbreaking movies.  Both great films though.  Another really tough pick I could go back and forth on.
#5 Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi vs.#7 Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan in the immortal words of Kirk, "Khhhhaaaannnn!!!"  Best of the trek films vs. worst of the original trilogy.

Thanks Section!  Looking forward to the round of 16!

Field of 64 - Sci-Fi Movies - Round 2

Some interesting match ups this time around.  Should be some close ones.

Alpha Quadrant
#1 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back vs. #10 Soylent Green
#2 The Terminator vs. #8 Jurassic Park -- Love the dinos, but the original T is a classic.
#3 Back To The Future vs. #6 Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
#4 Brazil
vs. #5 The Thing -- Brazil was one of the most original movies I've ever seen but The Thing edges it out.

Beta Quadrant
#1 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope vs. #12 Ghostbusters -- what a brutal match up.  I almost had to flip a coin.
#2 2001: A Space Odyssey vs. #11 Robocop -- Love Robo but he can't knock out HAL.
#3 Metropolis  vs. #10 Night of the Living Dead -- "They're coming for you Barbara..." One of the greatest lines ever by a zombie.
#4 Close Encounters of the Third Kind vs. #8 V for Vendetta -- V was good but CETK is timeless.

Gamma Quadrant
#1 The Matrix  vs. #8 Young Frankenstein
#2 Aliens vs. #7 A Clockwork Orange -- by far the toughest pick for me.  I did flip a coin on this one.  Literally.  And the Droogies won.
#3 Terminator 2: Judgment Day vs. #6 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial -- T2 will probably take it but ET is a great childhood memory for me.
#4 Planet of the Apes vs. #5 12 Monkeys

Delta Quadrant
#1 Alien vs. #13 The Time Machine -- Nothing against Time Machine but no contest in my opinion.
#2 Blade Runner vs. #11 Independence Day  -- ID4 is an awesome flick but BR was WAY ahead of its time.
#3 The Day the Earth Stood Still vs. #8 The Fifth Element
#5 Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
vs. #7 Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan -- Jedi is good but Khan is better.

Thanks Section.  Great work on putting this one together.
