Quite possibly my worst draft.......ever

Posted on: March 9, 2008 6:04 pm

It is a 12 team roto league, and I had the first pick. I do personally do not like having the first pick, because of the amount of time and players picked between selections.

Here it is:

1. Alex Rodriguez 3B
2. Curtis Granderson OF
3. Erik Bedard SP
4. C.C. Sabathia SP
5. Jonathan Papelbon RP
6. Adrian Gonzalez 1B
7. Rafael Furcal SS
8. Andruw Jones OF
9. Ben Sheets SP
10. Manny Corpas RP
11. Jarrod Saltalamacchia C
12. Jeff Kent 2B
13. Ken Griffey Jr. OF
14. Kevin Gregg RP
15. Derek Lowe SP
16. Kerry Wood RP
17. Justin Upton OF
18. Garret Anderson OF
19. Homer Bailey SP
20. Bill Hall OF
21. Orlando Hudson 2B
22. Frank Thomas U
23. Yadier Molina.

I think 23 rounds is too many, so I made the last pick a bit of a joke. But overall I am not too happy with this draft, don't think I am good enough offensively..

Thoughts?

What are you thoughts on using Jim Thome as a utility player or Ken Griffey as  U? I have troy Tulowitzky, would he be better?

I was hoping that Kerry Wood would be the closer, and have heard some great things about him in Spring Training. I thought he might be a steal at round 16, not much of a risk anyways.Yeah..but there have been great things said about Carlos Marmol too.  Not to forget that Bob Howry is still in the running..  Just a thought..

Your draft wasn't all that different from mine. Somehow, I got roped into a pitching-heavy staff, and when it was over I looked at my offense and barfed. I've already worked out a few trades to make small improvements with my bats, but I think I'll need to wait until the season starts and other teams realize that they can pick up a lot of points with better pitching. I probably have more than my share of potential sleepers on offense too. By the end of April, I'll have a handle on how much I need to give up pitching-wise to improve as a whole.

A comment re: Jay Bruce and Jhonny Cueto: Everything I've heard points to them starting the year in AAA, much to the chargrin of Reds fans.

boyd: Players on the waiver wire have been cut by other teams, but remain on waivers for a short time and may be claimed by teams according to their "waiver order." That order changes constantly; it usually begins with the inverse of the draft order. If no one picks the player up, he goes into the free agent pool where anyone can pick him up at any time. Your league's rules should have a complete description.

yeah you may have went pitching to heavy and too early. seems every year there are a couple guys in the late rounds and even on the wire that have breakout years. I always like the offense first , middle infield, just because there are so few. but who am i my fanasty teams in the past blew too.

Thanks for the input fellas.

The funny thing is I hardly ever go pitching heavy, actually this the first time I remember I took a pitcher before round 4. It was just wierd because I didn't feel like I was doing that bad...but when I looked back I thought it was awful, thought someone drafted my team for me or something. Guess I will just have to hunt the waiver wire for a couple of bats that get hot.

I was hoping that Kerry Wood would be the closer, and have heard some great things about him in Spring Training. I thought he might be a steal at round 16, not much of a risk anyways.

Guess I just have to hope that Furcal and the other reach picks work out for me...if not I have a feeling it will not come out too good.

The only thing I would say is that you drafted pitching heavy. With a relief pitcher selected in the 5th round. Now obviously I don't know how things went but I would have to imagine there was some talent to select from (offensively speaking) that could have been nabbed at that spot. I wouldn't think a closer would be drafted in the top 8 rounds but then again I know nothing as this is my first year of fantasy baseball and I had the autobot draft for me, as I was absent on draft day.

I too had the first pick.

Obviously I have no draft strategy but I'd think that obtaining a closer is a wee bit down the list.

You have a nice pitching staff however and remember not everyone can be great on both sides of the ball.

Yeah this one is bad Dragon....

I didn't really get ready for this one because I have midterms this week, so I just kinda...did it. After a couple of picks I looked back and I thought damn...this sucks...

Mike Sweeney is a guy I will look for on the waiver wire, and I think Bruce and Longoria are on the waiver wire (and I have them in another league and will consider picking them up as well.

Yeah I have one more draft, and it is after midterms....it should be better....because it can't be any worse.

Thanks for the conformation guys...worst draft...ever.

One other question, where Evan longoria or Jay bruce picked up. If not, those are other key components to your problem. Will Bruce even be the starter come opening day?
