The Music Lovers Thread

Posted on: February 1, 2008 12:50 am

Have to make my first blog entry about the best thread going, started by a gentleman named RockFlorida from, well, Florida, and It has grown to over a hundred pages in a very short period of time. An incredibley diverse and knowledgeable group of music lovers have contributed regularly and we've all found out about a ton of artists with whom we were unfamiliar or simply had neglected for too long. I've decided this blog might be the best place to keep track of these amazing musicians so I can look them up later. You can find this thread - What Are You Listening To? - by clicking on my messages page on my profile. I recommend that you start from the beginning, but I certainly understand if you want to go straight to the last page

Here is a short list of recommended musicians from this thread: Son Volt, Drive-by Truckers, Two Cow Garage, Deadstring Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Bruce Cockburn, Blind Albert, the Del Fuegos, the Trailer Park Troubadours, Antsy McClain, Southern Culture on the Skids, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, and many more. I've left off all the major stars who this group has listened to and discussed at length.

In addition, there are many sites where you can find streaming music, live shows, free downloads, etc. that are brought up. Some of those are yeproc.com, archive.org, wolfgangsvault.com, emusic.com, last.fm, and of course, youtube. This is a sports site, and everyone on this thread is a pretty avid sports fan, but music is at the forefront here and we've had nothing but a great time on this thread.

I don't know exactly how this blog works, so if you can comment on it with other music suggestions, or if you're a regular WAYLT (What Are You Listening To?) contributor, and want to add to the many suggestions I've missed and can't remember, please do so.

Meanwhile,

Enjoy The Ride!

The Music Lovers Thread

This is a good idea for a blog, Flamingo!

I was fortunate to ge in on the WAYLT thread from the get-go, and have been a regular there ever since-  Good thing, since it now over 130 pages long!  As mj pointed out quite rightly, it is a very refreshing change from all the name-calling and other BS that can plague the other threads, and a big reason for it's being my favorite.  The main reason though, is of course the music.  It's fun hanging with fellow music lovers & I have learned a ton from the experience, both in terms of discovering other artists I was unfamiliar with, and in terms of gaining a new appreciation for the ones I was familiar with, but hadn't heard for a while...

Since I'm one of the reletively few who post jazz regularly, then I will throw on a few of my favorites here-

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Ahmad Jamal, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Chet Baker, Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus....

Yopu bet! Just recommend them on the WAYLT thread with some of your thoughts and they are on. It's not exactly a regulated list. I am interested in any blues anybody can recommend, so I'll be checking them out on youtube or anywhere else you know of.

Any chance of The Black Keys making this list? Easily best new blues duo of recent memory...can't wait to see them down in Philly. Planning on seeing Krauss and Plant at Bonaroo 2008. Anyone with me?

WAYLT is a great respite from the bickering that goes on in a lot of other threads.  You never see a reply like this, "You're listening to Robert Cray?  You're a moron, Robert Johnson is the best and any other blues artist sucks!"

That's a classic, mj!

Good blog, Flamingo.  I was fortunate enough to get in on WAYLT early, so I have read it in its entirety, it could be quite daunting for someone to start from the beginning now.

All Music Guide or AMG is a great web site that I found out about because of WAYLT, I use it all the time, thanks Rock.

Tom Waits, John Hiatt, Leon Russell and Warren Zevon are some more of the artists that get brought up regularly.  They aren't as obscure as the ones you mention, but are not what you would consider mainstream, either.
