Ten Things That Have Me Pondering

Posted on: September 10, 2008 6:24 am

Early mornings, my brain seems to go haywire trying to defuse all the information that I take in while I sort through all the news, and all the extraneous garbage trying to put it in order.  The coffee helps, but not enough, so this morning I thought I'd try to sort out all my question and perhaps find some answers to them...

1)  Really, what is the appeal with NASCAR?  Okay, so there's fast cars going around in a circle.  How's that exciting watching that on the tv screen?

2) Why is it a win over the South Carolina Gamecocks, deems a college team the best?  Even Steve Spurrier had questions about this season.

3)  Will the Pittsburgh Pirates ever win the pennant again before I die?

4) Why is it that the media darlings always end up disappointing?  A rookie Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers had all the attention on them his first year out, yet they failed to get past the Patriots.  Both the Colts and the Bengals were the glamour team the next year, they never made it to the playoff.  Chargers were the team to watch the year after, the Colts won the Superbowl.  Even Patriots fans got tired of hearing about all Patriots, all the time.  David brought down Goliath.  Cowboy fans, think the attention your team is going to garner might not be a good thing?

5)  Why do people get upset when the media doesn't think their team is going to win?  Seriously, I love it when the majority of analysts pick against the Steelers, seems the Steelers like to prove them wrong.  Alot of  analysts picked the Texans to win over the Steelers.  All I have to say is keeping picking against them baby.

6)  Why is it that kharma comes back to bite you? Lot's of people giving Bengals fans grief about their "misfit" players, only to turn around and find that players on your own team had their own trouble with the law.  Chargers fans had to hear about Merriman and his roids...oops, someone was suspended for a few weeks for HGH.  Now people who've given that player grief about HGH, are seeing members of their own teams suspended for banned substances.

7)  I have to clarify something before I ask this question.  The other day, on a thread on the NFL board, I caught a Patriots fan yacking about how a Steelers win over the Patriots this year would be a "paper only" win, because Tom Brady went down.  If this is the case, then isn't the Patriots 16-0 season paper only?  After all, Troy Polamalu was out for that game and we know that no matter how great Tom is, he wasn't going to exploit Samson like he exploited Anthony Smith.  Steelers were holding their own until Brady lit up Smith.  Just saying....

8)  Why is it a playoff team is considered a nobody, trying to take away, not only Buffalo's win but Seattle's accomplishments.

9)  Why is it that fans of a team are referred to ALL fans?  Seriously, I'm getting tired of hearing that ALL Steelers fans are  a certain way, just like I'm getting tired of seeing ALL Patriots fans are a certain way.

10)  When did we lose our common sense when it comes to elections?  Some of the stuff I've been hearing simply defies logic.  If Obama is a muslim, why isn't Michelle and his daughters wearing burkas?

Okay, I seriously doubt that I'll really find any answers, but I bet we can come up with some interesting reasons to this.

Ten Things That Have Me Pondering

Jelly, I am a fellow proud alum, Class of 92.  I bleed black and gold and have hope each year that this is the year we finally get back to a bowl game.

As for your comment about Vandy and their performance over the course of the season each year, you hit the nail right on the head.  Let's jsut hope that 2008 is different and we pull out a win or two against the SEC juggernauts at the end of the year.

Did I mention I'm also a Cubs fan?  I must have something in me that makes me root for the underdog and believe that "this is the year".

Go 'Dores!  Go Cubs!

This is like the SI jinx.  I think it just seems that way.  lol  But you have a point.  Now that the Browns have five prime time games and are picked by some to win the division I fear the worst.

Yep, instead of jubilating over what the media is saying about the Browns, Browns fans should take note - though there are analysts who say Pittsburgh is the best in the AFC North...remind me to find Carucci and gag him.

I used the paper win as a point of contention.  Injuries happen and it's what you make of the injuries and get past them.  I'd much prefer to play a healthy Tom Brady and have the Steelers win, however, it doesn't make it any less of a win.

1-- most, but not all, grow out of 'dinky cars' by age 5/6

Okay, that may be the most logical answer to NASCAR...lol.  And thanks for letting me know there's hope for my Pirates JSB.

Hhhm, Nascar, well i do like to watch the races but not the way I watch football. While watching Nascar I'm usually doing something else at the same time waiting for the big crash. If you're really into Nascar you and have the time to keep up with all of the strategies, it can be reasonably entertaining at times.

The Pirates win the World Series? Not unless MLB adds a salary cap, which is not likely since the teams with the money control everything. Lets just hope that the NFL keeps some sort of salary cap system in place with their next contract. Otherwise football will be taken over by those with the money and the small market teams will slide to the bottom.  Druckenmiller's money might not seem so bad then. Yes there are examples of big money teams not winning(Yankees), or small market teams overachieving(Tampa Bay), but you'll never have the parody of the NFL.

2- I'm with you.  My beloved Vandy's win over Spurrier's G'Cocks certainly isn't a barometer of how good the Dores are this year or even how poorly SC might do the rest of the year.  It is only one game (mind you an big one for a perenial SEC cellar dweller) out of a very long season. The only thing that I hope comes out of this win ultimately is that it springboards Vandy to its first bowl since 82.

Vandy has actually had a fairly good football team.  In recent years, Vandy has won most of its non-conference games against team like Miami Ohio (already beat on opening day) and average to below agerage SEC teams (like Miss, Miss State, and sorry mom, SC).  Then, when they are one or two wins away from being bowl eligible, they lose four or five in a row to perenial powerhouses like Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Florida.  Truth is Vandy a relatively small private college that does very well for competing with such large public schools with strong football programs.  I'm proud to have graduated from Vanderbilt in 1978.

Chicagolaw, why are you a Vandy fan?

Ten Things That Have Me Pondering

1)  Really, what is the appeal with NASCAR?  Okay, so there's fast cars going around in a circle.  How's that exciting watching that on the tv screen?

To me, this one is easy even though I am not a NASCAR fan.  It's why soccer fans love soccer, golf fans golf, and so on.  It's an appreciation for what it takes to be good at the sport.  My guess, is you (mom) and I don't have a clue what it takes to be a good NASCAR driver and be part of a winning NASCAR team.  If we knew how difficult it was to change four tires in 10 seconds, or what was involved in passing another car at 150 miles per hour, we might better appreciate the race.   Heck, I don't even know the rules.  A fan would probably want to get infield seats to better see the inside action they had learned to appreciate.  I believe part of my love for football is an appreciation I have for what it takes to be a good football player.

3)  Will the Pittsburgh Pirates ever win the pennant again before I die?
You should try being a Cleveland fan.  At least you have the Steelers.  But it doesn't matter, you are a homer and a fan for life.

4) Why is it that the media darlings always end up disappointing?

This is like the SI jinx.  I think it just seems that way.  lol  But you have a point.  Now that the Browns have five prime time games and are picked by some to win the division I fear the worst.

5)  Why do people get upset when the media doesn't think their team is going to win?

Because it's something to complain about, and people love to complain.

10)  When did we lose our common sense when it comes to elections?

Not sure, but the candidates themselves sure try to win our votes by emotional rather than logical pleas.  BTW, I think the majority of people don't lose their common sense.  I doubt you do Mom, for example.

7)  The other day, on a thread on the NFL board, I caught a Patriots fan yacking about how a Steelers win over the Patriots this year would be a "paper only" win,

The sports board is full of yackety yack time killing conversations.  But I agree, it's not just the boards.  Many were saying Padrig Harrington's British Open win should be footnoted because Tiger Woods was recovering from knee surgery.  Give me a break please.  He beat the best golfers in the world less one.  No footnote required.

JD...lol..I'm not even going to touch that one, though I'm thinking we'll see Sarah more in a shroud that makes her either look like Mother Teresa or the Virgin Mary by the time that the campaign is over with.

ChicagoLaw, thank you...

-Hopefully while you were at the track, you didn't get the urge to take chicken wire and use it to secure a set of deer antlers to the grill of your car.

-Yeah, the way the Pirates have been for the last...well, I quit counting, I'm sure that it will be a while before they come back. Must make Cub fans happy that there is someone consistently worse then them.

-Well to speak frankly, it'll be good for the Patriots to lose some of their bandwagoners.  It was giving the true fanbase a bad name.  Guess we'll see them on the Dallas bandwagon now.
