Help Wanted Long Snapper

With Steelers longsnapper going out for the season with a torn ACL, the Steelers aren't looking to depend on James Harrison (or other Steeler starter) to perform the duties for the rest of the season.  According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the Steelers have looked at four candidates to replace the injured long snapper.

Also possible is the signing of a punter to fill in for an injured Mitch Berger if it's found that he's unable to play for the upcoming game against the Washington Redskins on Monday.

I agree with the fact that the long snapper is taken forgranted, I rmember when the Browns drafted Pontbriand in the 7th round in 2003 and I thought who the hell is this guy. Little did I know that he would end up being the most consistent draft pick that year.. lol Kinda crazy how Kellen Winslow hasnt been nearly as consistent as ole Ryan.

The long snapper is a job that is taken for granted.  Your average fan wouldn't be even be able to tell you his name, unless of course he started to make bad snaps.  In that case, the whole city would know his name.

The Steelers should be thanked for putting this issue in the spotlight for the rest of the NFL.  I wonder which teams have taken notice?

Sircheeks,

How often do long snappers get hurt?  Not often.  I think if we saw a really bad snap from any "emergency" long snapper from any team, that coach would get criticized.  It just so happens that it was the Steelers that it happened to and Tomlin found another position that he needs to work with a player on.

However, this isn't about the emergency long snapper.  Since Warren is out for the season, his slot needs to be filled.  So they're working this week to fill that slot.  I'm sure that Tomlin (and other coaches) will be working with their team to make sure whoever is the emergency long snapper is actually going to be prepared if a situation like this happens again.

maestrojpl,

I can see where there's a lot of job security for a good long snapper.  Only one roster spot normally being given to someone who can do that very well...at least you don't have to worry about challenging for being the starter.

Sorry if this question was already addressed, but why can't Justin Hartwig double as an emergency long snapper?

Either that, or one of the offensive lineman on every team should train with the second team in that area. Many people are blaming Tomlin for being unprepared, but virtually every team would struggle had they been in that situation.

It's amazing what kind of living you can make as a long snapper.  The Chiefs kept Kendall Gammon on their roster for years and all that he did was long snap.  He was an emergency lineman, but they never needed him for that.  When they drafted Jared Allen it was rumored that Gammon might lose his job because Allen was a good long snapper, but he was too valuable on the D-line to risk getting him injured snapping the ball, and Gammon stayed employed for a few more seasons.  He is now the sideline reporter for the Chiefs radio broadcast and a very popular former Chief.

I wish I would have stuck with long snapping I suppose because I did it in high school.  Who knew?

Hawg...I'm sure you'd like to see the punter backed up to the seats...would give the Skins good field position for the game.

I can see how my analysis for the Steelers/Skins game is going to go this week...lol.

I'd suggest the Steelers giving Harrison another shot, and putting full trust in Berger's leg. Yep, vs. the Redskins that sounds like a good strategy.
