Hughes finishes strong

In his last start for the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona fall league, Phil Hughes was, in a word, dominating.

5 IP 2H 0BB 0ER 10K.  53 of his 76 pitches were strikes, and he was again hitting the mid 90's with his fastball.

Overall, Hughes threw 30 total innings in Arizona, allowing 21 hits, 13 BB, 38K while pitching to a an even 3.00 ERA and a .198 BAA.

Considering he allowed 7 ER in 2 2/3 innings in one of his starts, he was really quite good overall.

Hughes finishes his disappointing 2008 season with a total of 112 innings pitched, meaning provided he stays healthy he'll be allowed to go to the 150 inning plateau next season.

A very positive end to a less than positive season.

Hughes finishes strong

Courtesy of Jayson Stark-another scout's view of what he's seen from Hughes this fall:

• Yankees pitcher (1-0, 3.60 ERA, 28 K's, 25 IP): "Saw him two games, and he cruised. He dominated, and he should. His curveball was very sharp. All those people who think he's lost his luster -- no way. Hell, he'd be our No. 2 starter right now."

Question... is Jayson Stark on the Yankee payroll??.  Cause no one wants Phil Hughes!!.. Wake up Yankee fans.. Our GM has made us  the laughing stock of baseball by telling all of baseball this guy is untouchable!!!.. PLEASE!!!!.. Hughes is a walking MASH unit who will never be more than an injury prone pitcher that will never live up to his potential. I really don't care if he is 22 years old.. Three stints on the DL.. Including injuring his ankle while on the DL GREAT!!!.. !!!! ( I wonder if this kid can walk and  chew bubble gum at the same time).. If Hughes has any trade value, trade him already before he slams a car door on his pitching hand.. I say ENOUGH on the HUGHES and KENNEDY hype..  Is it too much to ask for Stick Michael to come back and take control of the helm and put back the blueprint's he gave our brain dead GM to follow?... OHH George we miss you already!!!..

Hughes finishes strong

Glad to see that Phil Hughes finished strong. I hope he's ready to answer all the critics when the 2009 season starts... and the only way to answer the critics is to "wow" them IMHO

Hughes finishes strong

The velocity is back, which is huge. Knew something was up when he was topping out at 91 back in April and May.

Kid needs to be consistent, and he needs to stay healthy. Can't be on innings limits 3 years from now!
