Montero catching attention

Seems a lot of the doubts as to whether the 19 year old would be able to stick behind the plate are starting to go away:

"Without question, he is significantly improved this year as opposed to last year," Cashman said. "To the point that we don't really doubt he's going to be a catcher in the big leagues."

What I wasn't aware of was that it's in his blood-on his mother's side!

Good piece on Posada's hopeful heir apparent from Marc Carig at the Star-Ledger.

Montero catching attention

I tried to mimic his release when I was in high school but could never make accurate throws doing it.  Ended up using the more "fundamentally correct" style that Bench used.

Absolutely right, Joe. Munson willed himself to become an elite defensive catcher. If Montero has half the internal drive Munson did, he'll be just fine.

The only problem with him sticking at catcher is what do you do with Austin Romine?

............

Worry about that in 2011, I guess. If the Yanks have two MLB catchers ready to go, there's worse problems to have, right?

Sounds like his defense is the only question. Could be a significant question though considering that the Rays appear to be major contenders for the forseeable future and given their style of play. Being an "old school" kind of guy, I have a tendency to place more value on a catchers defense than their offense.  However, even if his defense is questionable, if he hits like they are saying, he is going to have considerable value. The Texiera contract would appear to block or at least put a large obstacle in the way of moving him to first base and he's probably too young to consider for a DH spot, at least as a permanent position. There is always the possiblity that he may end up being used as "trade bait" if the Yankees need to fill a hole. Or he could just keep improving his defense. If I remember correctly, Munson didn't have that great of an arm but he made up for it by having probably the fastest release in the game. At any rate, it will be interesting to watch his development.
