Michael Waltrip Update and a Surprise!!!!!!!

Well, Mikey has put himself in a position where he has going to have to make a decision,  Does he sign someone to drive the 55 next season or does he and his team get their act together and improve their position in the standings.  Now for some defense for Michael, he was running well at 'Dega when he got caught up in the second big one and that killed him in the standings, along with his engine exploding at Darlington.  However, Mikey started off well and has fallen off bad here lately and that puts him in a postions of where he needs to really improve over the next 5 races and if he can't maybe he should seriously consider stepping down.

As a fan that is hard to say but Mikey made a bold statement at the beginning of the season, to either put up or shut up, and if he doesn't improve he should step down.  Now who should he consider putting in the 55 next season if he decides to step down.  Well, there are two drivers who come to mind that will be free agents next season.

1.  Martin Truex Jr. - Martin is comtemplating leaving DEI and would be a good fit into the 55 car.  A strong driver who can help put NAPA back in the winner's circle.  Also, with Mikey having signed his brother, that may be just the thing to get Martin to come over.  Now you may ask why would Martin consider the 55 Car?  Well, all you have to do is look at how well David Reutimann and Marcos Ambrose are running and you know the equipment is there.  So I think Martin would consider it.  Martin could also be signed even if Mikey runs next season, especially if he brings Bass Pro shop with him.  Mikey has room for a 4th car and it would set up Martin running with his brother eventually.

2.  Jamie McMurry - Jamie is a free agent and I'm not sure he is happy with the whole Jack Roush situtation.  Plus Jamie and Mikey have made a couple of commericals together, food lion, and that may be the interaction that brings these two together.  So Don't be surprised if Mikey steps down, Jamie steps in.

NOW FOR THE SURPRISE I MENTIONED IN THE TITLE:

I'm going to catch a lot of grief over this one so hang on.

Tony Eury Jr. will become Michael Waltrips Crew Chief if he is fired at HMS.  Now don't laugh.  but Mikey and Tony Jr. had a good releationship at DEI and Mikey liked the way he set up his car.  So if Tony Eury gets handed his walking papers after the 600 look for him to be in the MWR shop within a couple of days.  Booty will be given another assignment within the shop and will remain.  But right now Booty can't get the front end of the car to Mikey's liking and that is why Mikey has struggled lately.  I know I have maintained Junior would never do anything with Eury Jr as his crew chief, but I don't believe it has anything to do with Tony's ability it has to do with the bickering the two do when in each others company.  And I think Tony can keep up with the track if given proper feedback from the driver.  But listening to Junior this weekend it's like he expects Tony to read his mind.  And that doesn't work.  Anyway it would be best for Both I believe if Tony and Junior split.

So you can say you heard it hear first.  That if Tony Eury Jr. gets fired he will end up at MWR.

Michael Waltrip Update and a Surprise!!!!!!!

After Jr's performance in the rain shortened 600, I am wouldn't be suprised if you are right and Eury Jr. gets removed.  I hope you are right and Michael gets a crew chief that can help him improve.  I would miss seeing him out there if he does decide to hang it up after this year.

Michael Waltrip Update and a Surprise!!!!!!!

I have felt the move has been a must for a while but Hendrick came out a few weeks back and was so adamant about keeping the team together. I wasnt sure if you had some other inside information. You are right though when Eury and Waltrip worked together, they made a good team. So if your theory holds true it will be a win win. Jr. fans will be happy and hopefully improvement on the track and it might just work out pretty well for waltrip too. so here to hopeing your right.

Michael Waltrip Update and a Surprise!!!!!!!

danny, if Junior doesn't have a strong run, I believe that Rick will let Eury Jr. go.  Reason, if he doesn't then Junior will have no chance to make the chase as the pressure will keep mounting to remove Tony.  I understand that even if Rick does fire Tony that the chance of Junior making the chase will be slim, not impossible, but at least Rick can tell the fans we tried.  And that is what it is all about.  Go to a race, last year the Green shirts were about 2 to 1 over the other shirts in the crowd,  this year, at least at the All Star Race it was the opposite.  In face Kyle Bush fans were having a good time going in front of the Amp Trailor, and taking off their Amp Green Shirts and Putting on a M&M T-Shirt, that is how some of the fans are feeling.

Do you really think Eury will be gone after the 600? What is your reason for saying he will get the axe. I thought he should have gotten it a long time ago. Have you heard something floating out there?

Michael Waltrip Update and a Surprise!!!!!!!

Mikey is ready to hang up the driver's fire suit. I can see a huge imrpovement at MWR this season, but really only with #00 & #47. I really like Jamie McMurray, and feel like he would be a huge asset to MWR if Roush is lame enough to let him go. Although I have a feeling that the #26 team with sponsors will just move over to Yates and stay with Ford. Jamie, I'm sure will have the first option to drive the car if that does happen, but he might want to explore other options, and MWR could be one of them. For me, his biggest decision there would be weather or not he wants to drive a Ford or a Toyota. Although I'm not a huge fan of Toyota, I do feel like they are being held back a little by NASCAR. They have the technology that's years beyond the Domestic makers, and could dominate with H.P. if they were allowed.

Anyway, nice job with the Blog. You brought up some very interesting points. -Coach

Michael Waltrip Update and a Surprise!!!!!!!

Mikey - Interesting thoughts on Tony Eury Jr. I realize he has worked with Michael Waltrip before and that may not be that far fetched. I guess only time will tell. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is at another track he has had success on in the past so if he doesn't have a good run I Eury Jr. may be out the door.

I think Jamie McMurray is more apt to replace Michael Waltrip in the 55 next year than Martin Truex Jr. If Michael is true to his word he will be out of the car but I don't expect that to happen. Not trying to "hate" on the guy becasue I like Michael Waltrip but take away plate tracks and he's done basically nothing in points races!

It wouldn't surprsie me to see Martin Truex Jr. in a 3rd SHR car with Bass Pro Shop as the sponsor next year. This is all based on the assumption that he leaves DEI...bluejay

Michael Waltrip Update and a Surprise!!!!!!!

main  - Work with a Nationwide team or a Cup team.  If Tony goes to work for Michael how would he be under the scope.  If he's a success then look what happens to those who were critisising him,  If he fails then everyone will just say look at his driver, it would be a win - win for Eury Junior the way I see it.

He goes to a team that know one has a lot of expectations about and shows his skills.  That could mean a lot in the future, plus it gets him out from under Dale Jr. and his Dad, both which can cause a lot of stress on him.
Mikey, Haven't you ever heard of the phrase "like father, like son". It is the same career path his father took, crew chief of Dale Jr to his Nationwide series crew chief.

I listen to Sirius 128 NASCAR radio alot and I would say that there are typically 2-3 calls per hour for Hendrick to fire Eury Jr. I say this to point out that it is rare that anyone else is sugested to be fired. There are no Chad Knauss threads.... Jrs crew chief is the highest profile crew chief job in the garage. If he goes to Waltrip and fails, it will be said that it proves the Jr Nation right, he sucks, even if Jr does nothing with his next crew chief.

Also he can't be all that self confident right now, If he can't perform with the best equipment in NASCAR, why is he going to be able to make the equipment that Waltrip has perform top notch?

Personally I see him staying in the family, I think there is some comfort there. You don't have to worry so much about showing up to wok with your tool box out front with your last check taped to it.

Not saying you are wrong, Just looking at it from a different point of view.

Michael Waltrip Update and a Surprise!!!!!!!

I think the addition of either Martin Truex Jr or Jamie McMurray would be a hugh plus for MWR.  The chance to get both would be even better.  No I don't see it being a reach to think that Tony Eury Jr. wouldn't consider joining MWR.  You're right it would be a win-win situation for both.  Michael has had a rough couple of years as an owner and it has showed up on the track during the races.  Maybe it's time to step back for a year or two and concentrate on getting all his teams to the chase.  I for one would hate to see him not race, but can fully understand if he didn't.

What ever Michael decides, it will be for what ever is best for MWR.
