Countdown: Top 10 NBA Players of All-Time (No.9)

Posted on: July 25, 2008 11:23 pm

9th best player of all-time:

Tim Duncan, PF

While some may argue with this decision, the San Antonio Spurs team captain is certainly one of the greatest winners in NBA history. Not only is he a four time NBA champion, he won the Finals MVP in three of those championship winning years.

Very rarely do you see a player who is as smart as The Big Fundamental. Combine smart play, tenacious passion, tough defense, and great rebounding and you get Tim Duncan, who helped turn the Spurs from the local joke to a championship contender. Paired with David Robinson, the Twin Towers made up one of the greatest frontcourts in NBA history, and one that will be hard to match by any team in the future of the NBA.

Duncan is also a great scorer, a very clutch shooter/rebounder, and a great competitor all around. And many will argue that he is the greatest winner since Bill Russell, which I wholeheartedly agree with.

Duncan's accomplishments include:

  • USBWA College Player of the Year (1997)
Naismith College Player of the Year (1997)
    John Wooden Award (1997)
ACC Player of the Year (1996, 1997)
NBA Rookie of the Year (1998)
    NBA MVP (2002, 2003)
    NBA Finals MVP (1999, 2003, 2005)
    NBA Champion (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007)
    NBA All-Star Game MVP (2000)

As stated before, very rarely will you see a player in the NBA with the passion to win, and the smarts to compete at a hall of fame level, which Duncan does, and does well. As long as the San Antonio Spurs have Tim Duncan, the Western Conference should be afraid. Very, very afraid.

Countdown:

10. Hakeem Olajuwon, C
9. Tim Duncan, PF

8th and 7th best players of all-time: Coming tomorrow

Not quite sure on this one folks, Duncan's pretty awesome(WHEN HE WANTS TO BE) Hakeem was AWESOME every night.  He had that killer instinct and used it well, unlike Timmy who's mad soft too often to be taken in the top 10.  Great player but not top ten for me.  Olajuwon deserves more respect than to be put behind Duncan.

I would've put Hakeem above TImmy D but can't really argue with Timmy being one of the ten best. Nitpicky, I'd drop him a little but certainly not an unreasonable pick.

I would have bob pettit instead of HAkeem, but otherwise ur list should be solid, with Magic, Bird, Jordan, Russell, Chamberlain, Big O, Kareem, and Shaq

I didn't think you would pick Duncan. Good choice.

Let's see 8 left...Jordan, Magic, The Big O, Bird, Shaq, KAJ, Russell, Wilt are the top eight ever in my book. There will be a big shock if any of those players aren't selected for me.

There's a bunch of players but those the the top 8 ever for me...spots 9 and 10 were up for grabs, but I don't think you can go over any of the next eight.
