Dick Vitale: That was impressive

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The most amazing thing just happened.

ESPN's Dick Vitale just walked into the press room before the Duke-Purdue game at Mackey Arena and loudly, cheerfully, made his way around the room, introducing himself to various writers. Maybe you remember my column on Vitale from March 2007, when I said he would get into the Hall of Fame "over my dead body." Well, he made it. And I'm still alive. Anyway ...

When he got around to meeting me in the press room, here's how it went down:

Him, hand extended: "Dick Vitale!"

Me, shaking his hand: "Gregg Doyel."

Him, putting his hands around my neck, jokingly: "You ripped me!"

Me, still being mock-choked: "I did."

Him: "Well, you weren't the first and you won't be the last."

Me: "No, but I was the best."

Him: "Maybe so, but ..."

And then he sat down and talked to me for 10 minutes. It was cordial, it was nice, it was a flabbergasting moment. One of the more impressive things I've ever seen.

I stand by my original column, by the way. But dadgum, Dick Vitale just impressed me.

You don't really know someone, until you mock them and see how they react to it.  Dick chose to be classy about it and that's good to know that he still has a good heart and took time to talk to you when most others that you mocked probably told you where to go.

I agree with you about him and the Hall of Fame.  John Madden is the Hall of Fame as a successful coach, but having staying in the limelight sure didn't hurt.  Vitale wasn't that successful, and while he may appear in college basketball video games, he does not have his name on one.

He's a good man, and I think the public is too critical on him.  Yes, he's a mascot, but dadgum, he's our mascot and the kids who play the game still enjoy what he has to say, even if it isn't very insightful.

I think the majority of you who responded are absolutely crazy. I actually miss Doyel covering college basketball and find Parrish to be Doyel light. Doyel has proven himself time and again to be an A-hole in his columns, but in doing so he also makes alot of good points and has interesting takes on certain subjects. Dick Vitale is not a journalist. He is basically the mascot of NCAA basketball. I had to turn off the game last night because I can't stand listening to him hyperbolize everything that happens in a basketball game.

Some of his classic lines

"he says hey ref you cant call a foul on me I'm an all-american" (pitch rising at the end)

"diaper dandy"

"All windex team, they clean the glass"

"3D man, he drives, he draws, he dishes"

"the General, Robert Montgomery Knight"

"Rick Pitino, he's always coaching"

Greg -

I'm glad that you were able to chat with Dickie V and get a sense of what the guy is like on a personal level.  That's really cool and I'm glad you took the time to write about it.

Someone was nice to you Doyle?  Well, that confirms what we suspected - Dick Vitale *is* going senile.   However, it is very interesting that when another member of the media is nice to you, we get a half-page article telling us about it.   What will we get when an actual athlete or coach talks to you?  Oh yeah, right, that's when you write a book.

Doyel, Im not gonna spew hatred like a lot of people on here seem to do. You, like most writers, have stuff i agree with and stuff i dont. However, the key point of your original argument is simply flawed. Whether you like him or not, Vitale has in fact been one of the key reasons for college basketballs rise in popularity. He is truly an ambassador for the game, and you can tell he loves college basketball. It never ceases to amaze me how people want to tear somebody down simply because they don't like them. Vitale being in the hall of fame is not going to have any impact on anyone's daily life, so i really don't see what the big deal is. Let the man have it, he deserves it. And yes, i sometimes get tired of his yelling too.

I feel like I just walked into a Rick Reilly article.

Take that for what you will, Gregg.
