Let me explain.
First, yes, I've booed Mike Krzyzewski. Several times. We've clashed on many an occasion, because that's what two great competitors at the tops of their field will do. (Ahem.)
But this was wrong. When Coach K walked onto the court minutes before tipoff Tuesday night at Purdue, the Purdue crowd booed the absolute hell out of him. And it's not right.
Why? Because Coach K just won a gold medal. He led the U.S. basketball team back to its place atop the world at the 2008 Olympics, and for that, he deserves a little respect. Not love. Not adoration. And not around the ACC, where the rivalries are too big.
But when the man walks into a packed house on a basketball-loving campus like the one at Purdue -- especially for the first time since the Olympics -- the basketball-loving people in the crowd should show him some appreciation and give him polite applause.
Or at the very least, they should shut up and let the U.S. gold medalist walk to his bench in respectful silence.
