Two OSU players just buried ex-coach Sean Sutton

This was ugly, and uncalled for. Oklahoma State starting guards Byron Eaton and Terrel Harris, both seniors, just ripped Sutton without naming him. As if that mattered. Check out the following quotes:

Eaton, when asked about the team's adjustment to coach Travis Ford: "As opposed to my first two years, the change has been great for me. ... (Ford) did bring a lot more intensity and discipline to our team, which was needed for us."

Harris, when asked the same thing: "It's a lot more intense. (Ford) brings a lot more intensity to the team, just a lot of discipline on the team."

In sum ... under Sutton, the Cowboys played a style of ball that wasn't fun for the players, who were allowed to run amok because Sutton just wasn't that much into discipline.

It couldn't be that Eaton was a porker who was a good 25 pounds overweight when he reported to school four years ago for Sutton. Nope. It was all Sutton's fault. Right, Byron?

Good grief, Byron.

You have got to be kidding me. What exactly is wrong with what Eaton and Harris said? By basically putting words in their mouths, you are an example of one of the reasons athletes and coaches often have so much disdain for the media. Is it wrong for them to be satisfied with a coaching change that brought them their first NCAA tournament win since they've been at OSU? They gave even-handed and honest responses. It's nice to not lose in the first round of the NIT and good for them--they earned it. As the two remaining members of one of the nation's top recruiting classes and having been through 3 coaching changes in 4 years, I'm surprised they aren't resentful. I'm proud of how they played today, and I'm proud of their mature responses to those questions. Get a life, Gregg, and stop trying to make a story out of nothing.

you know you make a perfect argument as to why it never pays to make thoughtful, inciteful and respoectful comments to the media...these young men did all of the above and you put words in their mouths, call one of them a name and ask them to not be truthful the next time they answer questions from the media.  from now on...hey byron and terrell what is the difference this year with the team?  no comment....that ought to work......"and discipline
to our team, which was needed for us" ...what do you think he meant by that comment gregg?

I think your reputation for objectivity may be buried with him.

I mean did you really just right that becuase you kind of proved their point with supporting data when you talked about Byron's weight and how Sean Sutton let it go unchecked.

I thinking a first round home loss to Marist is what actually burried him though.

I'm not sure what you have a problem with....the players telling the truth about their former coach or whether they should just lie and say there was no impact of change in head coaching.  I mean come on that's why Sutton was fired (forced out) and Ford was hired so that there would be a change.  Think about it.  When these seniors were freshmen, they had endured the total collapse of a legendary coach to alcoholism...then a head coach who on more than a few ocassions didn't even bother to show up for practice.  Now, they appear to have a solid head coach that has taught them to believe in themselves despite a dominant inside presence and make an incredible run to not only make the tournament, but win!

Seems to me you're just looking for something to whine about and instead should give Ford the props he deserves and the respect he obviously has earned from his seniors.

jonz, it wasn't harsh, and it wasn't a rip.  It was a dumb column, though.  How do you fault guys for answering questions honestly?

Touchy, aren't we?

Gregg,

You're whining almost as much as Roach K was about Obama's brackets yesterday.

Lighten up, Francis!

In your opinion what should the players have said?  It sounds as if a question was asked and they gave their honest answer.  I don't see what they said as being that harsh.

Fourth time, Cory? Are you keeping track of my idiotic columns? Do you have a scoreboard in your dorm room or something? How many more do I have to write before I get the free set of Ginsu knives?

Why everyone eye-rolls when the media whines...

All we ever hear are writers/broadcasters/bloggers complaining that players or coaches are too "guarded", and never say what they're "really" thinking...

Then these 2 players mildly rebuke their former coach as "undisciplined" in how he ran the squad...sounds pretty open right?

So how does Doyel reward this refreshing amount of candor?

By ripping them!

And then they all wonder why athletes and coaches invariably stop at "We worked hard" and other platitudes...

Pathetic...

I don't see why you have such a problem with what they said, especially to the point where you call one of them a porker. he was overweight but he said nothing wrong.  He said it much more intense and and got the players under control. Same thing is happening at oregon state. They said nothing wrong and this is the 4th time iv'e read something written by you and thought your kind of an idiot.
