Joe Paterno, selfish old man

Old isn't an insult, by the way. It's an adjective. If he were 35, I'd have titled this thing, "Joe Paterno, selfish young man."

But he's old. And he's selfish. And why? Because he is campaigning for the Big Ten to expand by adding Syracuse, Pittsburgh or Rutgers. "Not in that order," he says.

Like the order matters. What matters is this: Those three schools already have a home -- the Big East. But Paterno doesn't care about that. He's lobbying for his BCS league to grow, at the expense of another BCS league. We've been through this before, when the ACC knocked down fences and screwed up yards with its tractor by taking from the Big East for its big expansion. That was ugly. The ACC was selfish.

And now Paterno wants the Big Ten to be selfish, at the expense -- and possibly the death -- of the Big East.

Classy, JoePa. Hey, wait. Is that a siren? Was another of your players just arrested?

Anyway ...

Obviously the Big East is on shaky ground. No one's saying that league is in solid shape. It's waiting for a hyena to come pick at its struggling body, and Paterno is sharpening his greedy little teeth.

Beautiful.

Retire already.

along with retiring & going away....this will allow Pitt to play Penn State agin.  I agree 100%.  Selfish has been the perfect adjective for the past 15 years.  He is holding the entire state of PA hostage.

This reasoning is idiotic. What is selfish about a coach wanting to better the league he plays in? Absolutely nothing.  What is to stop a team from a weak league wanting to join a stronger league, giving their program more upside. Again, absolutely nothing.  In this short article Joe P was called selfish, classless, and greedy.  Do you have anything to backup these claims? Because if this is it, you should find a new job!

First, Mr. Doyel, I don't know why you have a grudge with Paterno.  Selfish?  I don't think so.  I believe that coaches who, just as their smaller school begins to be able to play with the big boys, jump ship and accept jobs with larger schools are selfish.  (Can you say "Rich Rodriguez?")  Paterno had many chances to leave Penn State, but he stayed loyal.  His salary is far, far below what other coaches in the Big Ten (or most other BCS schools) make.  He has given generously back to the University and to other charitable organizations througghout the years.  (I'll bet he's given a lot more than you have, Mr. Doyel.)

Second, since there are so few independents, from where does a conference get new members?  From another conference.  If the Big 12 were to add Colorado State, would you write an article screaming that they were looting the Mountain West conference?  Where were you when the SEC lured Arkansas away from the Southwest Conference in 1990, then the Big 8 conference put the nail in their coffin by adding Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Baylor in 1993?  Do you decry these schools for being disloyal or selfish?

Conferences and schools do what they feel is best for them.  Being a Missouri Valley Conference basketball fan, I would love to see the 1968 teams- Louisville, Memphis, Cincinnati, Tulsa, Creighton, Bradley, Drake, Wichita State, St. Louis- back together, but it will never be.  You have to be consistent.  If you complain because the Big Ten may target a Big East team, you have to rail against all conferences adding any team that belongs to any other conference in any sport.  You might be right in doing so, but i haven't seen it from you so far.

Probably the worst post I've ever read.  The Big East should no longer receive an automatic BCS bid.  Maybe the WAC or the Mountain West should receive the big.  Paterno is doing the right thing, maybe just completly getting rid of the Big East Conference would be the best thing for the awful "major conference."

Wait a minute, the Big East schools play football?  When in the hell did this happen?

Pathetic post, Doyel.  Paterno is just doing something necessary by trying to raid the Big East: eliminate them from BCS contention.  When was the last time the Big East deserved to have a team in the BCS bowls?  They are pathetic!  They got the automatic bid because of past play and based on their basketball stature!  West Virginia?  Syracuse? Rutgers?  None of these teams would compete in the Big Ten.  Maybe every few years they could put something together a la Iowa or Northwestern or Purdue, but in the grand scheme the powers are UM and OSU.  Get rid of the automatic bid for the Big East!

Pity for the Big East- No way!

I'm sorry, are you suggesting that the Big East is an innocent victim of other leagues? What a convenient use of history- as I remember it, there used to be a thriving conference called Conference USA, which was becoming one of the premier basketball conferences in the country. What happened there? Our poor victims in the Big East went and picked off several of its best teams, leading several of the remaining teams to jump ship to other confernces as well. So before you go suggesting that JoPa is selfish for suggesting that having Pittsburg's two big football teams in the same conference would be a good thing, maybe you should remember that what goes around comes around. Personally I would love to see Pitt in the Big Ten- unlike Notre Dame, it actually has something to offer the CIC (the academic arm of the Big Ten), and has the academic standards required out of Big Ten universities.

I agree.  JoePa is selfish.  For years he has tried to get his team to win at the expense of the other team.  In fact he has caused more losses for the other team than any other coach at his level.  How dare he be so selfish!  In fact Doyel is being selfish too.  By writing for Sportsline, he is preventing some other sports "journalist" from having a job there.  How selfish of him.  Retire already, Doyel.
