Old isn't an insult, by the way. It's an adjective. If he were 35, I'd have titled this thing, "Joe Paterno, selfish young man."
But he's old. And he's selfish. And why? Because he is campaigning for the Big Ten to expand by adding Syracuse, Pittsburgh or Rutgers. "Not in that order," he says.
Like the order matters. What matters is this: Those three schools already have a home -- the Big East. But Paterno doesn't care about that. He's lobbying for his BCS league to grow, at the expense of another BCS league. We've been through this before, when the ACC knocked down fences and screwed up yards with its tractor by taking from the Big East for its big expansion. That was ugly. The ACC was selfish.
And now Paterno wants the Big Ten to be selfish, at the expense -- and possibly the death -- of the Big East.
Classy, JoePa. Hey, wait. Is that a siren? Was another of your players just arrested?
Anyway ...
Obviously the Big East is on shaky ground. No one's saying that league is in solid shape. It's waiting for a hyena to come pick at its struggling body, and Paterno is sharpening his greedy little teeth.
Beautiful.
Retire already.

Joe Paterno, selfish old manHow did this guy get a job as a sports writer? Can anybody answer me that? Please? CBSSports must have been quite desperate.
Learn to write from a more objective point of view, and maybe you'll get a few more readers. |

Joe Paterno, selfish old manBig East, young and dumb and full of bums.
You're casting blame in all the wrong places. 20-plus years ago, it was Coach Paterno who acted upon his grand visions of creating an All Eastern superpower conference. As was the case then as it often is now, Paterno was way ahead of his time. His goal of putting together an All Eastern conference was ultimately blocked by Syracuse and Pitt. Here's yet another example of things coming around full circle in life and yet another example of a young punk trying to make a name for himself the wrong way by attacking a man whos enjoyed great success all his life by doing things the right way. Punk isn't an insult, by the way. |

Joe Paterno, selfish old manFirst: Anyone who believes that that the Cuse will make or break a conference, has been hibnernating that last few years. The Big East, did the same thing to Conference USA, creaming off the best teams, and is a better league for it. Would they still rather have Temple playing?
Second: As one ages they become more concrete and less flexible in their thoughts processes. This is happening with Papa Jo. To attack a senior like Breaston does, is out of line. Someday , he night reach the same age as Joe. Lastly: The Eagles, Giants, Ravens, Titians , Rams, amongst a host of other teams will all take Breaston off of the Cards hands if it will make the author feel any better. |

Doyel...Arrogant young man.Are you serious Doyel? You presume to have enough of a stake in College Football or the PSU program to tell the greatest coach still alive to "retire already?" For What? Because he put forth a plan to annex a team from another conference? It wouldnt be the first time. Confereces have done this numerous times in the past. If the school wants to leave....let em. If we want a Big 12 school....and they want to go....take em. We can get another one. Grow up. Joe Paterno was running a first class program when you were still riding merry-go-rounds in the schoolyard. He doesnt need you to tell him what is right for College Football, and neither do I.

Joe Paterno, selfish old manDoyel is such a joke. I agree with you Yankee; JoePa could care less about the status of the Big East if his own division benefits from it, he is, as others have pointed out, simply looking at this from a business standpoint.
I think that this reporter just feels the need to bash anyone that's popular just to get some attention for himself. In the past week: Joe Paterno and Dwight Howard, who are probably two of the most popular personalities in their respective sports. Who are you going to go after next? Derek Jeter? Shaq? Oh please. |

Joe Paterno, selfish old manI guess you forget that JoePa attempted to Join the Big Least in 82. PSU was rejected as the Nits were too strong in football and too weak at Basket Ball(Big East is a BBall confrence you know). Then Joe tried get some teams from the big least to band together for a football confrence, Pitt, Syracues, WVU, Rutgers and the like. They all snubbed JoePa's idea. They did not want to compete with PSU in football. JoePa and PSU join the Big Ten, WVU, Miami, Rutgers, Temple, and VaTech joined into the Big East. This is not about JoePa being selfish. The entire Big 10 would benifit from the addition of antoher football team. They would have a confrence championship. They would still play foot ball a little longer in the season. For the teams that make bowl games, they have been off the field about 6 weeks prior to the bowl game. This would also assist in any Big 10 team's shot for a National Title. Confrences that have championship games play an extra game and usually againts another highly ranked team on the other side of a confrence. These teams get the nod for a title hunt even with one loss. All of the three teams listed have great BBall programs and would up the level of Big10 hoops as well. Both Pitt and Rutgers of late have had good seasons on the football field as well. Where else would a 12th team come from? What confrence? MAC. ACC, where? Any way you slice it, the only independent football schools are Army, Navy, Western KY and Notre Dame. Anyother team would be taking away from a different confrence. You answer that for me.

Joe Paterno, selfish old manDoyel, you've done a lot of bad articles, but this takes the cake. This is garbage and shows you to be nothing more than a tool.
You disagree with Paterno. This somehow is related to his age? Or do you just hate all people older than you? And you misrepresent the facts. I don't interpret talking to reporters at an alumni event as "lobbying". He said what he thought - he'd like to see the league expand to the east and gain some east coast market share. Maybe to make Big 10 football relevant to more than the midwest? You can agree or disagree, but this crap you posted makes him look like a guy with an opinion and you look like a guy using a computer to pursue a vendetta. Here's an idea, and I know this is foreign to you - you say he's sharpening his greedy little teeth, but you offer absolutely zero of substance. Why greedy? And once you show he's greedy, say why the expansion is still wrong. This piece is pure unadulterated crap. Beautiful. Retire already. |

The fact that they are still considered one is laughable. The LAST conference I want to hear cry about another conference stealing teams is the Big East. They have been doing in basketball for years now! I didn't know there was such a thing as "BCS UNITY" that Paterno is violating. Seriously, are you 12 or something? And as for the BIG EAST football "league" where was their loyalty to Temple? They threw the Owls out of their pathetic little conference, oh well. Also do some reasearch, Paterno tried to get an east coast football conference off the ground for years but none of the teams currently in the Big LEast were interested in it, that is until Penn State went to the Big 10. I actually don't know why on earth the Big 10 would want any of those teams. |
