Joe Paterno, selfish old man

Old isn't an insult, by the way. It's an adjective. If he were 35, I'd have titled this thing, "Joe Paterno, selfish young man."

But he's old. And he's selfish. And why? Because he is campaigning for the Big Ten to expand by adding Syracuse, Pittsburgh or Rutgers. "Not in that order," he says.

Like the order matters. What matters is this: Those three schools already have a home -- the Big East. But Paterno doesn't care about that. He's lobbying for his BCS league to grow, at the expense of another BCS league. We've been through this before, when the ACC knocked down fences and screwed up yards with its tractor by taking from the Big East for its big expansion. That was ugly. The ACC was selfish.

And now Paterno wants the Big Ten to be selfish, at the expense -- and possibly the death -- of the Big East.

Classy, JoePa. Hey, wait. Is that a siren? Was another of your players just arrested?

Anyway ...

Obviously the Big East is on shaky ground. No one's saying that league is in solid shape. It's waiting for a hyena to come pick at its struggling body, and Paterno is sharpening his greedy little teeth.

Beautiful.

Retire already.

I don't understand why the writers at this site feel that they need to be so inflammatory in picking subjects for their articles. Joe Pa was simply offering his opinion on a situation, one that he has no control over. Yet, Doyel, every bit as arrogant as he apprears in his profile picture, feels the need to rip into him. I don't think he even means what he says. I think he's just trying to draw some attention to his name; to him, whether that attention puts him in a positive light or a negative one is irelevant to him. Plenty of other journalists have found sucess in going about their job the right way; this modern-day muckraking is unacceptable, and really hurts the credibility of cbssports.com and its parent broadcast service. In short, a pathetic article by a pathetic writer desperate for attention.

Oh, but YOU don't have a chip on your shoulder.  Yeah, I bet you met Joe Paterno.  You're probably the prick that stole the glasses off of his statue.

Shut up!  When you can write columns as well as Joe Pa coaches (which will never happen in your wettest dreams!) then maybe, MAYBE I'll give you the right to tell him to to retire.  Frankly, based on having read a lot (too many) of your rants, YOU should be the one retire, and do something more suited to your talents, like flipping burgers!

There's so much history to Paterno's comment that is left out. Doyel you could have had an interesting article here rather then just throw a shot at Paterno. Paterno tried to create the Big East back in the 80's. I don't know all the facts but Paterno approached BC, Pitt and Syracuse about forming a power football conference. At the time BC, Pitt and Cuse felt loyal to the basketball schools such as St. John's Providence, Villanova and Georgetown. Penn St. had a basketball and football program but no conference affiliation. If BC, Pitt and Cuse listen to JoeP back then the landscape of the Big East would have been much different for better or worse. I think Paterno knows the Big 10 has to add 1 more school and is simply lobbying for schools he has old friends or a history of affiliation with. I could have this wrong but I believe Paterno tried to create a football/ Basketball east conference power house. He was turned down so he went to the Big 10. There's a whole story here rather then "A SELFISH OLD MAN."

fresh Pitt has had plenty of five star recruits over the years. Unfortunately, they don't get any coaching once they get there. Foge Fazio, Paul "Pitt can't" Hackett, the reincarnation of Johnny Majors, Walt Harris and Dave Wandstedt have left much to be desired.

When is the last time Northwestern stole a recruit off of Pitt??  When was the last time Pitt went into Chicago and screwed Northwestern out of a 5 star recruit?  Never?

when did Pitt ever get a five star recruit?
