The NCAA is so hypocritical

So the NCAA is about to vacate Memphis' Final Four from 2008, presumably because -- while he was in high school -- 2008 Memphis star Derrick Rose used a fraudulent test score to get into college in the first place.

Fine.

But what about the program that made it to a Final Four with a player who, the NCAA later found out, had accepted more than $2,000 from his AAU coach while still in high school? That player also should have been ineligible. That school also should have vacated the Final Four.

But that player was Corey Maggette. And that team was Duke. The year was 1999.

So nothing happened. To anyone. To this day. Nothing has happened, and it never will.

My point? My point is that the NCAA, even with as much progress as it has made under Myles Brand, still uses selective justice when crashing down onto various schools or coaches. Then-Memphis coach John Calipari is on the NCAA's hit list, and so the NCAA ostensibly holds him responsible for Marcus Camby's dalliance with an agent in 1995, and for whatever Derrick Rose did while he was in high school hundreds of miles away in Chicago.

But Mike Krzyzewski is not on the NCAA's hit list, so Maggette is fine, Duke is fine, 1999 is fine, the world is a happy place full of seashells and balloons.

Forgive me if I vomit up a conch.

I said conch.

The NCAA is so hypocritical

You are forgetting to point a more recent issue the NCAA is doing NOTHING about.  In the very SAME game where Memphis player, who was ineligible, Derrick Rose played, one of Kansas best players DID NOT really graduate high school.  It has been found that Darrell Arthur's high school grades from South Oak Cliff in Dallas.

Since this happened in High School, and if in fact he was FAILING a grade in high school in the second semester of his senior season, wouldn't this mean he would not have graduated high school meaning he could not go to college????????????????

His high school is known for this, and have already given up at least one High School State Championship, BUT the NCAA has not done anything about this.  I don't see the difference.

This means its UNC vs UCLA for the 2008 title.  Let's get this game scheduled so we can have back to back titles.

The Untouchable Conchs

Maybe you haven’t caught on yet, Gregg, but Miles Brand is sending a clear message to the rest of the sporting world that Mike Krzyzewski and Pete Carroll are his fair-haired boys and he will brook no protest to the contrary. Hell, even Elliot Ness wasn’t this untouchable.

The NCAA is so hypocritical

Memphis also was cited for failure to monitor its OWN charter airplane, as investigators found $2,260 in unpaid travel expenses by Rose's brother, Reggie Rose.....this is beside the SAT fiasco and a couple of other smaller violations. mmmmmmmmmmm...and this is all they found. There is more and the NCAA needs to get rid of guys like World Wide Wes...a person who helps BRING players to coach Cal with means that is beneficial to the athlete.

The NCAA is so hypocritical

I believe the NCAA vacated UMass's 1996 Final Four appearance for a similiar offense. So why would they not punish the all mighty Dukies just three years later.  I doubt they would punish Duke period.

The NCAA is so hypocritical

Hoosier, I love you. Platonically. And you make a good observation, TyEllington: Myles Brand wasn't running the NCAA in 1999. Point taken. (And you're welcome, Smitty.)

great, but...

You know I love it when you Blogg, but I really hope this doesn't delay today's edition of Hate Mail.  And if you can ever sneak a jab at Jim Calhoun or Uconn into one of these pieces it would be greatly appreciated.
