There, Isiah ... was that so hard?
I can think of about 300 schools that would have given the naming rights to their gym for the chance to play North Carolina, but FIU had to make a mess of this and debate whether to play one of the most famous programs in the sport -- in any sport -- on national television.
This game will be one of the most significant events in FIU basketball history, and the AD and basketball coach literally had to think about it before saying yes.
Next time, guys, flip the coin. I bet a buck that a quarter is smarter than both of you.

There, Isiah ... was that so hard? How long before Zeek gets canned? He is one of my favorite players and one of the best Pistons ever...but he cant run a team, he has proved that time and time again. He should try coaching high school.

to paraphrase a recent anti=german spoof movie i saw, and thought i would HATE because of theviolence (but actually liked because of the first rate production value), "we have seen the enemyand he is us." or at least us until we get a chance to murder those jew murdering germans. the connection to Isiah? LIke the Germans in the movie at least,Isiah is tough as nails whenit comes to teaching what to do, but runs like a nail sliding down its own backside whenREAL trepidation approaches. Isiah, whom i actually liked years ago when I realized what a TOUGH momma he had,(ie. when she stood in the door with her boys and told the local gang trying to recruit Isiah no, thanks, we already have a gang, it's called the Thomas gang, at which point she produced a 10 gauge shotgun) is in the end a cry baby who only knew how to do it on the basketball court when HEwas the point guard. Not when he is the General in charge. I almost feel sorry for those FIA kids, except theywill see a top notch coach and program up close in person so much that those WIDE EYEDlooks will disappear sooner than otherwise and perhaps it will help them GROW UP in spiteof their coach. That is about as good as we can expect from Isiah. Drag him kicking and screaming to ahanging and he will be the one who, after the fact, claims it was his idea all along. |

There, Isiah ... was that so hard?I have to disagree. FIU will be lucky to be within 30. Roy will put the hammer down.

There, Isiah ... was that so hard?OSU, UNC ... does it really matter? The truth is, whomever FIU played, they were going to get hammered. Me? I'd rather play the defending national champs, the program with a (more recent) legacy of greatness and excellence, and then say to my kids: "See? There's the bar; that's what championship basketball looks like. You've had a chance to see it up close, and you can tell your grandchildren you played against the best, but now you can also see what it takes to be the best, and work toward that." Running in fear from a better caliber opponent is exactly why Isaiah was a lousy coach.

There, Isiah ... was that so hard? The kids aren't going to rally behind their coach after the UNC water boys come out in the 2nd half and are jacking up shot after shot on them. Playing Ohio State in their first game would be a more appropriate match up. FIU was told they would play either OSU or UNC in their first game, and apparently they were under the impression it would be OSU (until UNC realeased their '09-'10 schedule). On the other hand, making a complete debacle of this situation has to be taking a toll on the FIU players. If I was a player, I would feel like the basketball staff has absolutely no confidence in the team. This has to be and will be a confidence killer for the players either way you look at it. They have to play the defending champions in North Carolina, and it will be a massacre. The FIU staff did not react very well to this situation and both the players & Isiah Thomas will suffer the consequences.

There, Isiah ... was that so hard?C'mon Gregg. Calling Isiah (and the AD who hired him) stupid is like shooting fish in a barrel.

There, Isiah ... was that so hard?Speaking of coins, I hold the enviable position of "Mexican Peso" in the football betting predictions of the website I'm co-editor of. It's an ode to the fact that I won $100 one week last year in an 80-member pool picking all the games by flipping a peso. I went 13-3 (13-2 with the Peso; I had already lost the Thursday Night game). By comparison, I had won 9 games the previous two weeks combined picking what I thought would happen.
So the point of this anecdote? If a Mexican Peso is three times as smart as I am, then I would hope the American quarter is at least as smart as Isiah Thomas, even when coupled with some bumbling **** of an athletic director. Oh, I bet a buck someone will interpret that previous statement as me being racist against Mexicans. |

There, Isiah ... was that so hard?OSU would have shown no mercy what so ever for FIU has they would have lost points for letting Fiu stick around for a 10pt game. with unc you get the mercy rule has roy wont try to hang a 100 on them and will use it as a time to experiment and tweak the lineup to see what works. in essence its a scrimmage with a bonus of a check be handed out after the sound but not out of control whooping, because osu wasnt gonna allow them to be close by 20pts. it was a simple choice take a check and a 15-20 point loss to unc who will show mercy and allow garbage points, or get check and get brutally destroyed by osu who will show no mercy what so ever. not to mention the confidence breaker of taking a 20-30 point dragging by a good but not elite osu team. |

There, Isiah ... was that so hard?Like the old Grateful Dead song, The Monkey and the Engineer, what we have have here is a tragedy narrowly avoided. Pshew! For a moment there the entire Tar Heel nation was wondering we'd have to open the season with a Blue/White scrimmage. It would be a better game at least.
How embarrassing for FIU fans but like my brother says after a start as good as this one, "they're off like a herd of turtles." |
