Dean Smith just got slapped in the face

And so did Phil Jackson.

Both coaches won championships with Michael Jordan -- Smith at UNC, Jackson with the Bulls -- and yet to present him into the Hall of Fame, Jordan picked ... David Thompson?

What?!?

It's an enormous slap in Dean Smith's face for Jordan to not only not pick him, but to pick a player whose best days were spent at rival North Carolina State. Seriously, Jordan is far too smart to have done this lightly. If I had to guess -- and I'm about to -- I'd guess that the relationship between Smith and Jordan is not good. Otherwise, how can anyone but Dean Smith (or Phil Jackson) present Jordan?

Then again, there's that old joke that goes something like this:

Q: Who is the only man in basketball history to hold Michael Jordan to less than 20 ppg?

A: Dean Smith.

Maybe Jordan carries a grudge.

Meanwhile, David Robinson picked Larry Brown to present him. So a member of the Dean Smith coaching tree will be represented at the induction ceremony. Just not Dean Smith himself.

At least Jordan didn't pick Mike Krzyzewski as his presenter.

But I bet he thought about it.

Skyhawk, please. The world isn't the darkest place, no, but to sift through Jordan's life and think it makes ANY sense for him to pick David Thompson over Dean Smith ... is silly. Imagine being Dean. You coached Jordan at UNC. Jordan is your most famous player, ever. By far. And he picks an NC State alum to present him? Slap in the face. Every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Then again, what should I expect from someone who actually blamed Michael Beasley for having depression? That one was just reprehensible.

You have to remember though, Gregg, that the reason why MJ idolized David Thompson...is because Thompson couldn't dunk the ball in college (the "Alcindor Rule", in honor [??] of Kareem). Trust me, growing up here in ACC country, we saw Thompson back in the day. Man, could he fly!!!
Of course, he had a cast around him, too...Tom Burleson, Monte Towe and others...but Thompson was the main event. (Then again, MJ had his own cast: James Worthy, Sam Perkins, and on and on and on.)
Now as to why MJ picks Thompson?? There you got me...

Sophomoric comeback, Doyel. Like I'm that naive. This world also isn't an ultra-dark place where everything means a scandal or a fractured relationship.

I'm sure you're right. And I'm sure the world is a happy place where relationships don't turn sour, ever. Seashells and balloons for everyone!

Doyel, if you've read a biography of Michael Jordan, you would know that his childhood idol WAS David Thompson. He grew up an N.C. State fan and loved Thompson. Now he has the chance for his childhood idol to present him to the Hall of Fame. I highly doubt your guess is a good one. I think this is more about Jordan remembering his earliest basketball influence than insulting Dean Smith.
