Those Jordan kids ... wow

Something's not right with those kids, and I'm talking about both of Michael Jordan's basketball-playing kids.

One of them, Jeffrey, turned down offers to play at small schools, where he could have actually played, to go to Illinois, where he couldn't. In other words, he chose to play in his father's shadow at a school where he couldn't play at all. And then he quit the team in June, only to decide last month that he wants to come back and (not) play after all. The kid's a mess, and he hasn't made a smart decision yet.

And he's the one I like.

This other Jordan kid, Marcus? I can't stand him. He's the kid who went to Central Florida, a school that has an adidas contract, and refused to wear adidas. He wants to wear Daddy's shoes, to which I'd say this: If wearing Daddy's shoes is that important, then pick a school that has a contract with them.

But no. Marcus Jordan insists on wearing Daddy's shoes at an adidas school, and that petulance has cost UCF an enormous shoe deal with adidas, which isn't about to be jerked around by a teenager with an overblown sense of entitlement. Good for adidas. Too bad for UCF. Shame on Marcus Jordan.

And nice job, Michael.

Gregg,
Jeffrey started last night for the first time Vs. Iowa and has been the backup point guard for Illinois all season. Last season, he was extremely valuable as he was frequently used down the stretch in defensive situations. Do your homework, especially before you trash a kid.

Raise your own kids, Doyel. Then talk.

Never, never criticize a parent for the behavior of their college-aged children.  Your parents would have been embarrassed by most all of your decisions, and probably were glad nobody else was paying attention.

OK here I am again, I read through the comments and have came to a conclusion....Doyle has a job to do and like a good little boy he does it. He may not use tact in his comments, I say comments because I have of yet to see a actual story from him, but he's still writing so blame CBS.

As for the Jordan kids, they didn't choose their parents, which means just like the Hiltons, you won't be able to shed the persona. The spotlights are always on they just swing from person to person. We all know that. But to the story, Michael Jordan has done more for our economy than Adidas has. Adidas gave a school it's wares because it helps the school and its also advertising. Marcus comes along and wants to wear the shoes that his dad made popular. His DAD! Besides Jordans are pretty cozy. Now obviously he's being snobby, he has no superstar game as we can plainly see so It is of my opinion that he should conform to his chosen schools standards. Thats what you learn in the military, how to conform and form a conducive team. It also works fairly well to try to fit in with a TEAM you want to be a part of.

Marcus reminds me of a story about his dad. The Bulls won a game, Jordan had taken over at the end of the game and scored like all the final 15 pts or so. Tex Winters was pissed about Mike not sharing the ball or running the offense. He went over to Mike after the game and told him so and said "There's no I in team" Jordan replied "There's an I in win, so whichever way you want it"

Only problem is Marcus has done nothing. If you remember Daddy Jordan was somewhat humble as a rookie and for sure in college.

Tip #1- Doyle, state the facts and state your opinions as options not truths.

Tip #2- Marcus, you are not your dad, if you want to be original, make a name for yourself, Then wear your own shoes.

Tip #3- Jeffery, life is not as simple as you think, make mistakes and learn from them or ask questions of people who have been there.

Tip #4- Everyone, "Those who do not learn from the past are destined to repeat it."

Read Doyel's article and a few of the oppossing responses, and they, together, remind me of an old cliche: "there's 3 sides to every story; mine, yours, and the truth." Re: the the UCF thing; sure you could argue that if there was an agreement in place Marcus, is that his name (?, for those of you who don't get it that little querrie was to point out he's not Michael - he's not 'larger' than anyone else on the team) may have had every right to where Dad's shoes, but, and I am pretty sure the vast majority of coaches would agree that having two standards has a unquantifiable but real, negative affect on the team. And this should be about the team.  Having said that, I am fully aware that unfortunately other things like, HELLO, money infests most decision-makers standards. I think it is a given that most ADs would consider it a "bid feather in their headdress" to bring a Jordan kid to don the school's colors.  There is a definite "push-pull" thing here, with the risk/reward ratio unquantifiable even to the likes of Will Hunting.

Re: the kid that went to Illinois.  I have no clue as to what the real story is, but I am pretty sure, like positive, that he didn't quit to focus on his grades only to find out he could ace all of his classes, and still have too much time on his hands.  That could be filed under "If you believe that one I've got some...".

I am pretty sure Doyel has convictions about the topics he writes on.  Having said that, my guess is that he like any non-primadonna (and no that's not a dinosaur - look it up in your Funk and Wagnall) is subject to changing opinions or at least tempering them somewhat if new evidence is presented.  The fact is he is doing his job well if he is provocative. My guess is that He's probably concerned for his fellow man, and if Jordan's self-actualized, look at me now detractors, Hall of Fame speech is indicative of what "rubbed off" on the kids; there is good reason to be concerned.  Daddy's the one who has too much time on his hands.

Maybe this seems counter-intuitive, but I believe articles like Doyel's are good for the kids to see.  Why?  Because these kids are at an age when their social skills are being honed.  A big dish of humility (pain) might awaken them to the fact that life isn't about legacy.

University of Illinois is one of the top schools in the country for ACADEMICS.

Basketball is a hobby for JJ not a career.  Selecting U of I was the right decision for multiple reasons, and he worked hard to earn his playing time at his dream school.

On another note, how come you don't have a defined gender on your blog header?  You assume the answer is obvious when it obvoiusly isn't.

More responsible reporting from Doyle?! You can't stand a kid you never met because he wears a certain brand of shoes? And calling out MJ as a parent? All parents should be so fortunate to have 2 kids attending college, one on a scholarship to boot.  You want to hate on someone, why not go after kids that deserve it like Florida's Brandon Spikes who could have SERIOUSLY injured Georgia's running back last week with his eye-gouging spaz attack!  Or do an in-depth article on Tim Tebow and just how radical of a religious group he belongs to...it's not your mom & dad's christianity, yet you in the media treat him like he is Jesus Christ on a football field.  Oh yeah, i forgot Gators never rag on other Gators; kind of like Fox News never ragging on the Republicans in politics.   Keep up the attacks on kids not in Gainesville, wouldnt expect anything more from a Gator.

Leave it to doyel to take cheapshots at Jeffrey Jordan for wanting to play ball at a big school. as if no one has ever done that before! come on doyel, do you actually get paid for this garbage. and calling him a mess is just not right, he's a young man trying to play basketball. his dad is the most famous sports icon of all time. give the kid a break!
