France cheated ... and NOW everyone's outraged?

Soccer is a sport where cheating is commonplace. This is a sport where players walk the ball 10 or 20 yards up the field before throwing it in, just to get an extra advantage. This is a sport where teams set up a human wall 10 yards from the ball, as the rules say, but then creep forward to close the gap.

This is a sport where players flop around the pitch field like fish trying to draw fouls or even red cards on opposing players, because playing 11-on-10 is easier than 11-on-11. This is a sport where every bit of contact requires a stoppage in play and possibly a stretcher to carry the wounded faker off the field.

And everyone's outraged because France's Thierry Henry used his hand to stop a ball in the box, leading to the pass, and the goal, that sent France into the World Cup at the expense of Ireland?

Nonsense. This is a sport where faking is celebrated, so get off your high horse, soccer fans. Thierry Henry didn't cheat worse than anyone else.

He cheated better.

Absolutely right. Anyone who has played soccer beyond the middle school level knows all the faking that goes on. As long as the ref doesn't see, in soccer it's fair.

Oh my, Doyel is taking the time to write about soccer?  A World Cup qualifier?  France vs. Ireland, no less?  The sport must be making an impact and show revelance to Mr. Doyel.  How about that!

France cheated ... and NOW everyone's outraged?

I am glad you posted a thread because CBS will not allow me yet to post my own thread bc i'm considered an amature..  I agree with you on many topics more than most of the bloggers on this site..

That being said I have a question for you and with utmost respect..

I will state I played soccer in nearly every position for 12 years of my life and that includes 2 years in college so I do have a very good understanding like yourself with soccer.  I also played basketball for 8 years and 2 in college as well..  That being said..

Are you calling out soccer for a sport of cheating or are you just stating this because we are talking about soccer and there are "cheating" aspects involved (like in every sport)?

You, having played soccer for 10 years have seen blatant handballs (Marodona) and an instinct to stop a ball that is moving quickly..  I'm not sure why so many are chastising Henry to be another Marodona..  No, I'm not saying you did but calling this cheating throws him in that same category..  Maradona was a blatant hidden punch to throw the refs off to make them think he headed the ball in for the goal.

If you watch the play you can see it is a reaction.. What would we be saying if Henry just stopped play, with no whistle blown, bc he hand balled "twice"..  He would have been blasted for blowing it, he wouldn't be praised for being honest..

That being said I disagree with the blog in this..

How many punters who "take a fall" when a defender breathes on them get blown up for cheating??  They get praised and the announcers laugh saying.. "HAHA a nice sell by the punter" and the same going for the NBA defender who "takes a fall" for a bogus hand check..  then you hear.. "HAHA a nice sell by the defender there"..

You don't see Defensive Lineman jumping offsides then just stopping because they knew they were wrong, they go on with the play or they will be chastised for giving up on a play where a referee missed the call..

My honest opinion on this whole ordeal with Henry is why are we blaming Henry when the Referee clearly blew the call here..  He missed 4 calls on one free kick..  There were 2 men offside and a double hand ball..

Shouldn't the issue be the referee for blowing it more than Henry "cheating"..  Or is it because in major soccer games people actually lose their lives to over fanatic fans for blowing a game..  Andres Escobar and George Joseph for example..

Calling this cheating is ridiculous.. I played soccer for 12 years and yes that is past high school..  It is an instinct to throw your hand up as the ball is going out like that..  If you watch the play you can see it is a reaction.. What would we be saying if Henry just stopped play, with no whistle blown, bc he hand balled "twice"..  He would have been blasted for blowing it, he wouldn't be praised for being honest..

There's a difference between gamesmanship and cheating.  This was cheating.  Educate yourself before you fire off an ill-informed blog post.

The sledgehammer in your avatar is quite symbolic of your ability to grasp the subtleties of the game.
