One of biggest NCAA upsets ever

Not sure where Northern Iowa's 69-67 victory against Kansas ranks on the NCAA Tournament Upset Meter -- but it's somewhere near the top.

For one thing, Kansas wasn't just a one seed, but the No. 1 overall seed. Best team in the tournament, allegedly, loses in the second round? To a No. 9 seed, not even an eight? And to a No. 9 seed from the Missouri Valley? That's enormous.

Especially the way this happened. Northern Iowa didn't just beat Kansas. It owned Kansas. Pwned Kansas. Got 3-pointers from its 7-footer (Jordan Eglseder) and 3-pointers from its 6-footer (Ali Farokhmanesh) and tenacious defense from everyone. The Jayhawks had more size and quickness and still couldn't get comfortable on offense, falling behind 47-35 in the second half before mounting a rally that didn't quite get it done.

So where does it rank among the all-time upsets? It's somewhere close to George Mason over UConn in 2006, which is the biggest shocker I've ever seen. It's better than Nova-Georgetown (1984) or NC State-Houston ('83) because those were upsets, yes, but they were big schools beating big schools. This is an upset and a small school beating a biggie.

So it's up there. Maybe it's even first.

There goes the "Big East Sucks" comments. Although, 'Nova and Gay- town desire to leave early. The real Big East teams live on.

Right and Kansas cut the nets down in what..08 or 07? (I'm no kansas fan..so I have no idea when, but I know it was just prior to NC's last nat'l champ run).  So what exactly is your point?

They've both recently won National Championships, and while KU was bounced in the 2nd round this year, NC failed to make a relevant tourny?  So once again, what the hell is your point?  You obviously are in need of one..

They said Missouri Valley champion. Bradley got an at-large in 2006. SIU in 2007 also was an at large.  2002 SIU also an at large.  I think you see the picture.  So, what he said was right. The last Missouri Valley Champion, i.e. the team that got the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, that got to the sweet 16 was Larry Bird's Indiana State team in 1979.

...this is why people should not write sub-par reactions 10 minutes after a game.  This is pretty shoddy, even by your standards.

One of biggest NCAA upsets ever

I can think of bigger upsets. Idaho State beating UCLA in 1977 ending the Bruins final four streak at an amazing ten in a row. St. Joseph's dribbling through Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings and the rest of the "Ole" defense of DePaul to knock them off in 1981 in the first round. DePaul and UCLA were both one seeds.Weber State knocking off North Carolina ending their Sweet 16 streak at like 100 years. Hell even Princeton backdooring defending national champ UCLA out of the tourney in the first round in 1996. NIU was a great upset but they do have some competition for greatest upset ever.

One of biggest NCAA upsets ever

Anyone who has seen UNI this year would have known that this was possible.  Expected, no, upset, yes, but Northern plays basketball as a team as well as anybody outside of the Ivy league.  This is an upset, but the biggest ever, not even close.

One of biggest NCAA upsets ever

I watched Kansas a few times this year and they dont have that one star player.  If you look at every championship turner the team has one stud with a great supporting cast.  Sharod collins is not a stud.

Watch Ohio State they have one stud and a great supporting cast therefore they will win it all.  Great win for n. iowa congratulations
