NCAA nickel-and-dimed UConn

I can't make this math work, so maybe someone can help me. I'm talking about the arithmetic behind the NCAA's punishment of UConn for some fairly outrageous violations within the men's basketball program.

The math eludes me here. First you've got the NCAA deciding that the director of operations -- a de facto assistant coach under head coach Jim Calhoun -- was so scummy that he cannot work for anyone in the NCAA for two years. Then you've got a former UConn team manager, also working under Calhoun, becoming an agent and heaping illegal benefits on a recruit. Then you've got the NCAA saying that Calhoun "overlooked indications" that those violations were taking place.

I add all of that up, and I see a major penalty for UConn -- and for Jim Calhoun.

The NCAA added it up and didn't see it. Maybe because it's hard to see with your head buried in the sand. Or buried somewhere else.

Calhoun was suspended for three conference games. That's something, but not much. The team lost a scholarship or two, lost some recruiting days on the road, lost some phone calls. That's also something, but also, it's not much. Instead of giving UConn a meaningful smack across the chops -- a postseason ban of a season or two -- the NCAA threw a whole lot of small stuff at the Huskies. Maybe the NCAA was trying to fool people like you and me into thinking it was coming down hard on the Huskies.

Look at that long list of penalties! It just goes on and on!

Don't be fooled. Think of those penalties as a handful of nickels and dimes. I could throw coins at you for 30 seconds and it wouldn't add up to anything significant. That's what the NCAA did with UConn. It threw a bunch of nickels and dimes at the Huskies. Total cost? Nothing significant.

Unless my math is wrong, but I doubt it. I was always pretty damn good with numbers.

The kid never played.  Not a single minute.  Ever.  The penalty fits the crime...

And I seriously doubt your mathematical proficiency.
; I assumed you were an idiot.

UConn doesn't deserve a post-season ban. The player they recruited illegally was kicked out of school without playing a game for them.

Great analogy, Doyel. NCAA can throw all the so called "nickels and dimes" it wants at UConn, and you know what the response is???..."Not a dime back!"

Ha, ha, dem some good comments JDW!

As for the subject, I think it's pretty clear that the NCAA took it easy on UConn, and likely because they're having such a good season....if this were a repeat of last year, nobody would even be talking about UConn, the team wouldn't be in the top 15 and they'd be off the radar, thus easy to trash. However, since the Huskies are playing pretty good ball and this is due in large part to Calhoun's coaching, they've got to take it easy on 'em...I'm pretty sure that Calhoun is under consideration for coach of the year, can't have him getting serious penalties AND votes for coach of the year....what he/they did was wrong, but I say again, I'm pretty sure 95% of the other schools operate pretty much the same and just didn't get busted on it...thanks yahoo! Oh, does anyone even use yahoo anymore?

Disclaimer: I'm a UConn fan. One question, Gregg, are you saying only that you're puzzled, or are you saying that somehow UConn got a lesser penalty simply because they are UConn? If the former, yeah, I am too, except I'm pleased. If the latter, we need to talk.

Revoke the NCAA tax-exempt status. The Godfather couldn't run the NCAA any better the way they keep their punishment and money in the "Family".

You're exactly right Doyel. They let Uconn off easy. Typical NCAA.

How can anyone respect the NCAA after the USC Bush fiasco, or the more recent tOSU tattoo incident.  Sorry to say the NCAA has no bite, and athletic departments and coaching staffs are going to take advantage of every loop hole.  They might even create some, like UConn appears to have done.  Your math is correct.

Doyel, haven't been on here in awhile, but just wanted to comment on your picture. I remember not too long ago, you had a picture of your frosted tips and come hither grin. Finally decided to man up? The hammer in your hands is like putting lipstick on a pig. We still all know how you roll.
