Mizzou hires Frank Haith; Miami revels

Posted on: April 4, 2011 12:24 am

HOUSTON -- In the most bizarre hire of this offseason, Missouri reportedly has hired Miami's Frank Haith -- a move that makes no sense, on any level, to anyone outside of Missouri AD Mike Alden's office.

The hire was confirmed by CBSSports.com's Gary Parrish. I'm writing it because he's busy, and I'm not. Who cares who writes it? Point is, Missouri panicked after being turned down by Matt Painter and went for a guy who wouldn't turn the school down.

Frank Haith had that going for him.

But not much else.

In seven years at Miami -- in a down era for the ACC -- Haith was 43-69 in league play and 129-101 overall. He went to one NCAA tournament, in 2008, and has gone 60-41 since. Known as a great recruiter under Rick Barnes at Texas, Haith hasn't shown that skill at Miami. Making you wonder if maybe the great recruiter at Texas was, you know, Rick Barnes.

Whatever the case, Miami fans were rejoicing on the Internet Sunday night to be done with Haith, and preparing for the Hurricanes' inevitable pursuit of Kansas State's Frank Martin -- who got his start in coaching in the Miami high school system and who is a force on the South Florida recruiting circuit to this day.

With Jacob Pullen graduating at Kansas State, the time could be right for Martin to go home. We'll see.

Mizzou hires Frank Haith; Miami revels

Wow, I mean Wow.  For the sake of the Big 12, I was hoping Mizzou would upgrade, or at least hold serve.  And they hire this guy?  Seriously?  I hope this turns out to not be true.

I really wanted a big name coach to take Anderson's place and make the Big 12 proud.

Not that brain power in Columbia, MO is that great, but Wow!! I wonder if panic played a part in this hire.

Good thing Gene Smith is around, otherwise Mike Alden would look like the biggest AD tool.  Anyway this hire is not exciting, but I will give Haith a try.  With more support, maybe he can accomplish more.  Please keep the in state talent...

He sits in a 2-3 zone defensively almost always. Even when guys start drilling 3's, he doesn't leave it.

Offensively, he doesn't ever know how to recruit a true PG. His teams at Miami have always relied on the 3. They shoot a ton. He likes guards.

His teams NEVER learned how to handle full-court pressure. They also have always struggled to inbound the ball. The commit a lot of turnovers, rotate the ball around from 30 feet for the majority of the possession and never look organized.

Granted, he has recruited OK at Miami, he does have a couple 5 stars on the roster right now. But he clearly doesn't know how to best develop them, a team with two 5-star recruits and a couple other 4 stars should be in the tournament.

As of now I actually agree with Mr. Doyel and his article.  Worse move Mizzou could of made, why not wait a couple weeks, Shaka??? or anyone else.  I wouldn't think Frank Haith is being heavily pursued.
Ok Miami fans let's hear about this guy as a coach, what does he bring to the table?  What kind of system does he run?  Offensively does play the post game or run and gun style?  Defensively does he played pressure defense, man to man, zone?  Where does he recruit?  Let's hear it, I will definitely be intrigue to hear.

And really, a down era for the ACC? The ACC has won three of the last seven national titles while Haith was at Miami, and Florida won back-to-back titles. I mean, dang, look what he's had to deal with.

Trust me as a Miami fan, this is a bad hire.
You exist in the winter? Color me shocked. I'm an ACC guy myself, and I think Missouri made a solid hire.

Frank Martin to Miami?

Wouldn't he have to take a pay cut to move from Manhattan to Coral Gables?  Just asking.

My first feeling is I do not like this hire but I feel like we will just have to wait and see what happens.

He had one losing season in seven years at freaking Miami. This is a bad hire for Missouri...how, exactly?

He NEVER had a winning record within the ACC. He failed to make any postseason tournament in 3 of the 7 seasons.

Trust me as a Miami fan, this is a bad hire.

Missouri didn't go after Shaka Smart, or at least wait to make a phone call to Brad Stevens why?
