When an idiot speaks, starring Bob Knight

You don't like Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari? Fine. You have ammunition.

Calipari recruits kids he knows will spend one or two years on campus, kids interested more in pursuing the NBA than their college degree, and if that's the sort of thing that bugs you, complain about that.

Calipari has taken three schools to the Final Four, and two of them had to vacate that appearance because of NCAA violations involving a player -- not a coach, but a player. But if that's the sort of thing you want to lay at the head coach's feet, fine. Lay it there. Complain about that.

But what you can't do -- what ESPN commentator Bob Knight did do the other day -- is ignore the pile of facts at your disposal and make up your own. And come up with your own half-truth or even your own outright lie, and use that to attack John Calipari.

But again, that's what Bob Knight did the other day when he defamed the entire starting five on Kentucky's team in 2009-10 by saying, "Kentucky (that season) started five players in the NCAA tournament games that had not been to class that semester."

Interesting statement. But an outright lie. It makes Calipari, who clearly isn't on Knight's list of people he likes, look bad. But it makes five young men look awful, and unfairly so. Because John Wall went to class that semester and made the honor roll. Patrick Patterson went to class that semester and earned his degree -- in his third year. I don't know what Kentucky's other three starters earned that semester, but if Knight thinks they didn't go to school, well, that's all I need to know to believe otherwise.

Because Bob Knight has no idea what he's talking about.

I'm not big on, "So-and-so owes an apology!" But today, Bob Knight owes an apology to John Calipari, and to Patrick Patterson, and to John Wall, and to the rest of Kentucky's starting five. He said something awful about them, something blatantly untrue, and he needs to correct it.

But he's a bad guy, so he won't say a damn thing unless ESPN makes him.

So that's where we stand. What's it going to be, ESPN?

You going to allow this?

I can't confirm that he was an academic all american, but Mark Pope who played for Rick Pitino, did get into Medical School at Columbia University (see I can Wikipedia too).

No college athletes (basketball/fottball anyways) at ANY school go to classes.  Get your facts straight!

WTF does Woody Hayes have to do with any of this?  Coach Hayes was a lot of things.  Some bad, but mostly good (overwhelmingly so).  But telling lies about those he disliked was definitely not a Woody Hayes thing.

If you can't make that connection in your own little mind I don't see a need to help you out. Unless you consider someone that grabs, bullies, kicks, curses, chokes, assaults, everyone in his path into a hall of fame career as well as shoots his "friends" i.e. Robert Montgomery Knight not having any similarities at all with Woody Hayes......The man not only instructed Knight in a mandatory English class at OSU but also punched the Clemson kid Bauman in the throat during the 1978 Rose bowl game or tore up the sidelines, markers, and threw the penalty flag into the crowd in 1971 against Michigan, and even hit his own player in the head in the 60's after telling him to take his helmet off.....I don't see any connection at all there do you?

Let me guess you're a buckeye fan, suffer from myopia, and evidently many concussions to the brain as well if you can't see the similarites between those two fine examples of educators and leaders of young men.

He's just mad that he isnt irrelevent anymore so he's gotta lash out at UK once a year.People tht believe this garbage are as dumb as he his and he's lookin pretty stupid right now.You think in Cals first year at UK they(AD/school)would let that happen? There isnt a coach in college hoops that wouldnt of took any of those guys.Cal can stack 5 star recruits up like hotcakes and fans, coaches, and some reporters dont like that. There is schools all over the country even in power conferences that would like to get one of these kids much less 4 or 5.

People are gonna hate you when your good and on top of what you do.Thats called life. But this ol fart must be lacen his metamucil and prune juice with big blue haterade.I could tell on ESPN during the tournament when they would ask him about the OSU/UK gm he wanted to through a chair or somethin. He's hated UK all along but since we've gotten Cal he's gone crazy with hate.

Knight certainly has his moral lines concerning College athletics and the rules that govern them.  I'm not sure how those ethics justify his past antics but that's a different thread.  Why he chose to make this a UK/Calipari topic is the real story..... This is an NCAA / NBA situation; not a UK/Calipari situation.  If you don't like the fact that kids must be a full year out of HS to go to the NBA then bicker w/ those that make those rules - not the coaches that live by them.  Knight chose to make this a Calipari/UK thing just to be vindictive and low-class.  He's got issues w/ UK - fine.  He's got issues w/ Calipari - again, fine.  There's plenty of history to have legit issues with either of those.  However, this is neither a UK nor a Calipari issue.... just Knight showing his A** again.

ESPN will not do anything. It was not an ESPN sanctioned event, and he was not representing ESPN, but instead represented himself. Therefore, ESPN will simply sit silent and continue to watch this jackturd run his mouth.

I don't know about that Smith. ESPN as his employer is responsible for his comments. Even though he wasn't speaking as a ESPN representative at the time he's still their employee. And his comments, (as classless as they were are irrelevant to one thing) the fact that his attack on Calipari, UK, and it's student athletes in his annual statement he makes when he travels to Indiana to speak to those that actually believe his lies and applaud the old curmudgeon when he speaks is a hugh problem for ESPN.

Will they do as you say, and as Doyel mentioned state that he wasn't speaking as an ESPN employee at the time and sweep it under the rug or will they handle this situation and deal with him appropriately....

Remember they suspended Jalen Rose recently after his DUI arrest. And then there's that deal that ESPN has with the SEC not to mention public opinion. Would they really want to take that chance of making that many people upset enough to boycott their programming.

So at the very least I think they'll make him retract his statements. Of course if he does it then it will be filled with his usual sarcasm.

Pigpen420, you are as bad about facts as the illustrious Bobby Knight is.  You refer to "coaches that jump programs before sanctions are handed down", when neither UMass, nor Memphis had any sanctions placed upon them.  You guys keep using thses references to blast Cal, just as Knight does, when there is no truth to it.  If you don't like him, fine, but use a truthful argument.  That is exactly what Doyle is trying to get across.
