So, is Maryland basketball a Top 20 job?

Posted on: May 6, 2011 12:09 pm

Off the top of my head, as Matt Jones and I discussed the coaching vacancy at Maryland on our weekly podcast, I said I wasn't sure if Maryland is a Top 20 job. After further consideration ...

I'm still not sure. That doesn't mean no.

To me, there are a dozen jobs that are without question better. Why better? Some combination of tradition, facilities, fans, recruiting base, ability to compete within in its conference, and weather.

Those 12, in alphabetical order: Arizona, Arkansas, Duke, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Texas and UCLA.

To me, there are another 12 jobs in the next tier. Maryland's one of them, which means Maryland could be the 13th-best job in America. Or it could be 24th.

The next 12, alphabetically: Gonzaga, Illinois, Louisville, Maryland, Memphis, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, UConn and Xavier.

Bottom line? I'm positive Maryland is a Top 25 job. And possibly Top 20. Or not. It's close.

So, is Maryland basketball a Top 20 job?

Where it should be... not on this list!  Cincinnati job is closer to Providence or Seton Hall job than to the teams on this list!

The best facilities in the nation? Yeah, right. Arkansas will get Texas players, but they get the players left behind after Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and now Baylor have their pick. Is that why Dana Altman took the job and then high-tailed it back to Creighton?

Arkansas is actually 16 years removed from being one of the top 5 programs in all of college basketball. The kids who are going to be high school seniors this year weren't yet one year old when the Razorbacks were national champions. Some of them weren't even born yet when Arkansas cut down the nets.

Yes, Maryland is a Top 20 job.  And for those bashing the Arkansas inclusion, consider this:  Doyle is suggesting the TOP JOBS, based upon all factors.  He did not suggest a national ranking based upon the product on the floor.  Arkansas is up there.  They have decent weather, the best overall athletic facilities in the entire nation; they can recruit nationally, and have a Texas hotbed in their backyard.  They are only decade removed from being one of the Top 5 programs in all of college basketball, and play in a competitive SEC.  They have the money to pay a quality coach, and outside of Kentucky, and arguably Florida, they have the opportunity to be the 2nd or third best program in a Big 6 conference.  They should be a perennial Top 25 product.

What's not to like?

Arkansas is in no way a top 12 job. Connecticut is MUCH better of a job than Arkansas. Also, how is N.C. State on this list? N.C. State is not a top 24 job. Come to think of it, Arkansas isn't either.

My top 12, in alphabetical order, are Arizona, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, North Carolina, Syracuse, Texas and UCLA. Next tier includes Georgia Tech, Gonzaga, Illinois, Louisville, Maryland, Memphis, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh and Purdue. Cincinnati and Washington are just outside that list.

I would definitely say Maryland is a Top 20 job. Top 15, maybe not.

One year back in the NCAA and UC fans think they rule the town.  When Mickey can sustain success over multiple years then you trolls can talk.

Doyel there is one team in Cincinnati and it's definitely not Eggs-avier, It's a BEast team, it's a program with multiple National Championships, it has developed two of the greatest college basketball players in Oscar Robertson and Kenyon Martin, it's fans expect to win, it has brand new support facilities and are working on a complete renovation of it's arena, to this program it's all about Catitude.  UC basketball rules Cincinnati Doyel!  Duke was scared to play us this year, Kentucky has been scared to play us for years, and Ohio State has ducked us every year except the first year of rebuilding.  Get a clue fanboy!

I would drop Arkansas, Texas and Florida from the top 12 and replace them with Maryland, Syracuse and UConn. Therefore Maryland is a top 12 university for a college basketball coaching job!  Gary's only weakness was in recruiting in one of the nation's hot beds(Baltimore - DC area) of basketball talent
