APR punishment show us who the real dummies are

The NCAA just hammered some schools from the SWAC and MEAC for low graduation rates, which I find ironic -- given that the NCAA shows absolutely no intelligence at all by delivering that punishment.

Of the 58 harshest penalties handed out by the NCAA for poor APR results, half of them went to schools in those two conferences, a lopsided amount given that historically black schools account for just 7 percent of NCAA's Division I.

This isn't a black thing or a white thing, of course. It's a money thing. And leagues like the SWAC and MEAC -- leagues without BCS football or high-major (or even mid-major) basketball -- have no money at all.

Schools such as UConn and Tennessee and Florida and UCLA have ample money to pay for incredible academic support services for athletes -- tutors, computers, advisors. Meanwhile, student-athletes in poorer leagues like the SWAC and MEAC make do with very little of that.

So my question to the NCAA would be this:

How can you possibly hold schools from the SWAC and MEAC to the same APR standards that you hold schools from the SEC and Big Ten?

What are you, NCAA ... stupid?

Of course the NCAA is stupid, they get to operate outside any governing body so they get to act like the bully at the park that police do not patrol.
Exactly. Can't wait for Congress to step in!

So, fans complain all the time about perceived preferential treatment, but when the NCAA sets policies regarding the APR that treats all schools the same, people still complain.

And to the USC fan, one player (that we know of) accepted benefits and there is no way folks at USC were unaware unless they were intentionally looking the other way.  And OSU is going to get slammed harder than USC when it is all said and done.

Of course the NCAA is stupid, they get to operate outside any governing body so they get to act like the bully at the park that police do not patrol.  Then Emmert and his lacky's pretty much flip anyone who doesn't agree with their decisions because he doesn't have to answer to anyone.

He's like a movie drug dealing villian cops don't go after.  Break USC legs because of one player, disregard inconsistencies in the evidence that they claim coaches knew (not agruing Bush didn't take the benefits) and then allowed Ohio St players to not only play in a bowl game after they were caught red handed but they will probably hit Ohio St with kid gloves too.

Bunch of crooks and rectal holes is what they are.

As a Tennessee fan, can't speak for the other 3 - but Tennessee's Athletic Department supports itself and, as a matter of fact, is in such good financial shape that every year donates money to the University. The Athletic Department receives no tax-payer assistance from the state. And believe me, the athletes at Tennessee - and I feel certain about the other 3 schools - are treated very, very well.

Where does the NCAAs money come from? The schools, I wonder if the breakdown would show which schools and conferences raise the most.

They say the are impartial and fair to all the schools in the NCAA. I bet if somebody took the time to check all the NCAA imposed sanctions/fines for the BCS football or high-major (or even mid-major) basketball will be proportionally lower than smaller conferences.

They seem to hit harder and more often the smaller schools than the bigger ones.

Take Ohio State, 5 game suspensions for players who sold stuff with the knowledge of the school. The suspensions to start next year thus making the players available for bowl games. Check the smaller schools see if they get the same punisment.

I have always distrusted the NCAA and the BCS for favouring bigger schools.

NCAA may not be stupid, but we should all know by now, they are owned.  And they don't care that we know.  And most fans only care about winning.  And the big money from TV, sponsorships and endorsements likes pleasing the fans, which is where their money comes from.  A very ugly, and yes, very stupid carnival ride many of us like to call major college sports.  Don't forget the funnel cakes!
