Big East reduced to WVU, Potsie and Ralph Malph

Posted on: October 7, 2011 12:14 pm

As if it hasn't jumped the shark already ... if the BCS doesn't take away the automatic bid from the Big East for the 2012 season, I'd ask the following:

Who's running the BCS? Arthur Fonzarelli?

Listen, I live in Cincinnati and don't enjoy the watering down of my own backyard football program, but facts are facts. And the fact is, the Big East probably didn't deserve a BCS bid at full strength -- and the Big East definitely won't deserve a BCS bid next year, barring something crazy like Notre Dame (or Texas) joining.

And since the Big East is looking instead at schools like East Carolina, Central Florida and Memphis ... well, there you have it. This is not a BCS league.

This is not even the Mountain West.

No offense to you, Mountain West.

And no offense to you, either, West Virginia. The Mountaineers deserve better than to be in such a weakened league, but that's where West Virginia is. Surrounded by mediocre, at best, football schools. And West Virginia plus a whole host of mediocre football schools does not equal a BCS bid.

I mean, that's not an even an opinion.

That's a fact.

Big East reduced to WVU, Potsie and Ralph Malph

As a Pitt fan, I must admit I enjoy the blowing in the wind status of WVU.  However, at the end of the day I know I love to hate them, and would be disappointed if they got stuck in whatever is left of the BE.  I feel confident they'll find a seat at the Big 12 table, and quite honestly it will probably be good for them as far as athletics go.  Too bad their academic record prohibits them from an ACC invite, would have loved to keep the rivalry an in-conference game.  Can't wait to see their fans digestiing the Texas attitude - see.... love/hate.

Agree the Big East is a conference of mediocre, at best, football teams. Sounds like the perfect fit for Notre Dame. They'd fit right in.

Doyel being Doyel. Who cares about your lame ass columns anyway.  Aren't you from Fairfield OH, not Cincy? I think you are.  Always got a bug up your butt about the Big East, don't you? The realization is that many of us don't take college football too seriously, it's not the ONLY sport. The Big East is about basketball, up until our loyal friends at Pitt and Cuse decided to take a powder, we had a phenomenally interesting basket ball season each year culminating with  a tourney at a little place call Madison Square Garden each March. BTW where is the NCAA on all this realignment of conference based on FOOTBALL $$ only? What about the college athletes that participate in track & field, baseball, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming etc., etc. I guess they aren't on the same athletic pars as football players? The presidents of these so call institutions of "higher education" should be ashamed of themselves grubbing money for the "sake of education", please!!!

ECU, UCF and Memphis. If you guys had half a head you would stay put where you are at. The Big East is grasping at this time and you are begging to join a shinking ship.  If you would stay put you might get AQ status where you are at with your league talking a merger.

Just so you have your facts straight......

WVU has actually won the Big East Title 6 times and won it in 2010.  We have simply tied for Co-Champion 4 times and won it outright 2 times.  We will add another outright and 11-1 season this year to make it #7.  May want to check your facts about a school first next time.

"Watering down of my own backyard football program" (Cincinnati) by adding ECU???  You do realize that Cincy is 5-12 all-time against ECU, right????  Cincy was the whipping boy of the Pirates for years.

In the last five years, WVU, Cincinati, USF, Rutgers, and Louisville have all been ranked in the Top 10 at some point.  I'm not sure about UConn but they have certainly been in the Top 25.  I don't think Pitt has made the top 10 and Syracuse hasn't made the top 25.  Doyle seems to only be talking about tradition/history and not recent achievements... its basically dumb and unsupported by the facts.

It's always great when people that don't know what they are talking about chime in...since 04, each of the years that WVU didn't win the Big East outright, they were in a two or three way tie for the title, so yes they have dominated the conference.
