Call their bluff, Rick Greenspan (morning!)

Posted on: February 22, 2008 9:00 am

Thanks to some tremendous reporting by's Gary Parrish, we're now aware of the ridiculous ultimatum posed to Indiana AD Rick Greenspan by several Hoosiers, who said they'll walk out on the team if Greenspan follows through on his plan to get rid of phonin' Kelvin Sampson.

Do it, Greenspan. Get rid of Sampson and let the chips idiots fall where they may.

This is a toothless threat, first of all. D.J. White is going to give up his last shot at playing in the Final Four? Eric Gordon is going to give up his only shot at the Final Four? They can't be that dumb. And if they are ... do it, Greenspan. Send the message right now that Indiana will not be told how to run its shady business by college kids.

Right now Greenspan looks terrible for bringing in Sampson in the first place. He'll look even worse if he refuses to kick the cheater to the curb. And if he caves in to the players? He'll end his own career. He's finished.

But if he stands up to the players, even if they follow through on their threat, he will look noble for the first time in his miserable career at Indiana. And Indiana will recover.

If Indiana gives in to college kids who love their cheating coach? Greenspan won't recover from that. Neither will Indiana. Not ever.

Call their bluff, Greenspan. The college kids might have more cards in their hand, but you've got something more valuable.

The knowledge that you're right.

your a fuckin idiot gregg ill back the players over the "man"anyday ,ad's are way over rated its the players that make the university if they believe in thier coach then maybe there is something to his deniel of the "ALLEGATIONS"

I wasn't aware that people were still fighting "the man". Yes I'm sure these ballplayers who have a free ride for room, board and not to mention an education that takes people decades to pay off, are really downtrodden coal miners who are just looking for a raise from the palty 5 cents an hour they make breakin rock.

However I'm sure you're right. The AD is just some punk trick from the streets who doesn't know anything. In fact after reviewing the years of history the NCAA has in place it sure would seem like those AD guys just show up and collect a paycheck.

Spot effing on with this article. If folks can't comprehend *why* this is such a big deal then they need to re-evaluate their own moral compass.

This is why Sportsline will always be second class. Bogus stories, then reporters adding their idotic opinions onto the bogus story that has been reported. C'mon dude, get your head out of you know where and get your facts straight before you start making your self righteous comments !!

Sure does seem pretty straight-forward. Will the players truly risk their season and futures on a cheating coach?

I think that is bogus reporting.  I live in Bloomington and nobody else is reporting that and ESPN would have picked it up by now anyway.  I also think Greenspan has done really well with all of his hires (um Terry Hep) in Bloomington except for Sampson.

Gary's "tremendous reporting" article seems to have disappeared. Hence your babbling blog make zero sense to most people.

Oh yeah, nice job on calling a bunch of bummed out college kids idiots. Way to Pile on you tool.

I couldn't have written this better.   Sampson is a great coach but he broke the rules no matter how insignifant they may be to him.   As a huge IU fan, if players don't want to play for IU and stand by Sampson, let them leave.   DJ, get control over your team.

Greenspan should step down immediately!  He started this whole thing, why should the kids have to suffer, and why is even a part of decision making process at this point?  He obviously has failed the university, the players, the Indiana fans all over the country.

Once again, the press is making decision that you are guilty until proven innocent,  which the writer of column is consistantly running his mouth about things he knows nothing about.

This is street gang mentality - my coach, right or wrong.
1, if these kids do it, what do they prove?  Nothing - at least, nothing positive.  Fight for principals?  Where are the principals?  Prima donnas.
2, if IU takes them seriously, then the inmates run the asylum.
3, IU needs to remember that the team exists for and at the whim of the school, not the other way around.
4, Gordon and White would be broadcasting SERIOUS character issues that will hurt them in getting to the NBA - both will be gone after this year, but at least White would likely fall to 2nd round (no guarantee) (unless Zeke Thomas thinks he should be the 2nd overall pick).

5, If I were Greenspan, I would fire Sampson.  I would give the players a chance to recant their statements as being heat of the moment.  Then, I would appoint an interim with the understanding that each of the players that did not recant is dismissed for conduct detrimental to the team.  They want to make their bed, and they must lie in it.
