Vitale, in the HoF?!? There goes the neighborhood

Dick Vitale is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, which I suppose means I'm about to kick the bucket. Because at this time last year I wrote something along the lines of, "Dick Vitale will make the Hall of Fame over my dead body."

Well, shoot. If someone can pry that rifle from Charleton Heston's dead cold hands, I guess someone can pry Vitale's neck from my teeth and let him into the Hall. But I don't get it. I understand he's famous. I understand he's popular. I understand he loves basketball. The same can be said for Jack Nicholson. Is he going into the Basketball Hall of Fame next?

Nicholson has his own Hall of Fame. It's called the Academy Awards. But if I'm Nicholson, I'm looking at Vitale's entry into the same shrine that houses Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson and Larry Bird, and I'm wondering what's next:

An Oscar for Bugs Bunny?

How can you even think of comparing ozzie smith to dick vitale? Ozzie actually played his sport and not only did he play, he had skill. I don't think you can be classified as an "entertainer" only when you win 13 gold gloves for the SS position and go to the all-star game 15 times. he also had a career fielding pct. of .978 at the SS position. how can you say he was never in the right position? he knew his fundamentals as good as anyone in the game...but as you say, none of that was "achievement", just "entertainment". that is ridiculous.

God I can't stand that man.  When he talks its like fingernails on a chalkboard.  I actually watch less basketball because of him, and when he's on sportscenter I have to turn the channel.  Thank God ESPN doesn't call the tournament, it's a nice break.  Just because he lucked into a job on ESPN at the perfect time, doesn't mean he belongs in a now illegitimate hall of fame.

So why is he going to the NBA hall of fame.  What has he done for the NBA?

I could agree more...Vitale is one the biggest frauds on this planet.  The only conference he recoginizes is the ACC; he couldn't even tell you which conference Kansas or Memphis plays in if you asked him.  If he is SUPPOSED to be Mr. College Basketball, then where is he during the tournament after all the ACC teams get knocked out?  Oh yeah, thats right...he's at home crying like a little whining baby.  I want to vomit everytime I hear him and Mike Patrick doing the ACC tournament; you'd think that that's the only good conference on this planet year in and year out...what a joke that guy is.

I couldn't agree more.  Vitale doesn't even recognize any other conference in college basketball other than the ACC.  It's almost sickening.  And, if he is SUPPOSED to be Mr. College Basketball, then why don't you see his face once all the ACC teams have been eliminated in the tournament?  Thats easy...its because he's home crying that his two beloved teams, aka- UNC and Duke are at home.   Its an absoulte joke that this guy is in the Hall of Fame and another joke that he roots for only the ACC.  That guy is the biggest fraud on this planet!!

Most of those clowns on the ESPN crew love everything that Vitale says. Whenever I turn on a basketball game and I hear his voice I cringe. Off goes the volume and then I enjoy the game with some music playing. With all of the graphs now days it's very easy to just watch a game and not have to put up with someone telling you that some player that will probably never amount to anything in the NBA is the best college player in the country. If a person that is deaf or hard of hearing can enjoy a game without sound then I definitely can do the same by muting my tube, especially Vitale and listening to my collection of soft jazz.

You just said it yourself, he led the charge for COLLEGE basketball, not the NBA.  This is the NBA HOF not the college HOF.  So, why does he need to be put in here?

Growing up when i didnt follow college basketball i still knew about Dicky V. The guy is a legend and is pratically the face of college basketball. He obviously belongs in the hall of fame... of broadcasting or some other crap but not the Basketball HOF. What is going on in sports right now?

Mark Twain was right: "... all politicians, old buildings, and prostitutes become respectable with age". No sportswriter who voted vitale into the HOF should ever be allowed to vote again. How obsequious can you be!
