Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

Maybe Florida Atlantic couldn't do better than Mike Jarvis.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than a coach who ran St. John's so far underground, the sinkhole will eventually swallow the guy who replaced Jarvis, Norm Roberts.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than a coach who was accused by one of his own players at St. John's, Abe Keita, of helping supply him with $300 a month for three years. The NCAA looked into that, but Jarvis and others refused to fully cooperate, and the NCAA was never able to make that charge stick to him. But still.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than hire an insincere Northeast snob who hasn't coached in three years.

Maybe FAU really couldn't do better than Mike Jarvis.

How sad for FAU.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

Your really think this is that bad of a hire? I agree what he didn to St. Johns is sick and that program will take another 4 years to even get back to playing big East tourney ball but He is an experienced coach going to a program that needs some experience and its putting FAU on the map a little bit. If they hired some new no name coach would we even be talking about this? Maybe some of the recruits will see this and come calling and then who knows?

dead on, doyel!

it is a sad day for FAU... sad, sad day... the FAU administration really dropped the ball on this hiring and showed NO accountability or integrity in this hiring

this is why our football program became the fastest ever to reach and win a bowl game and our baseball program has been to eight regional appearances and a super regional appearance.... WHILE basketball is left in the toilet and has had ZERO success... we hire LOSERS to run our basketball program

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

FAU showed that they want to be able to compete with the schools in Florida and the rest of the country. While Mike Jarvis may be a jerk, he's also an excellent coach. Hopefully he will leave all of his previous bad acts behind him. FAU wanted to make a splash and guess what, they did. All they have to do is assign someone to closely monitor the basketball program and they should be ok. Jarvis isn't a dummy. He knows this is probably his last chance  to change his reputation as being someone willing to win no matter what it takes. Hopefully now he will do it the right way.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

Mike Jarvis ran a shady program at GW recruiting European and Russian imports and then moved onto St. John's where he ran the program into the ground.  There's a reason he's been out of college basketball working as a commentator for four years.  I guess that having a "name" coach beats having a no-name coach when recruiting at a small school in Florida where they are competing against Top 50 programs, but it also shows the president and adminstration had no backbone whatsoever.  Jarvis will get them a NCAA tourney bid in the next 3 years and then leave for a bigger program leaving FAU under a cloud.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

I don't mean this as a personal knock on you lewdogg, because you sound like a reasonable guy.  And frankly, I really hope you turn out to be right on this one.  But if you look back a couple of years in time, you will find dozens of posts that say almost exactly what yours did, only they are from the fans at IU with regards to the Kevlin Sampson hire.

IU also showed a willingness to want to compete at the highest level, hired a man who knew how to coach, had bad acts they hoped he would leave behind him, made a splash, and assigned people to monitor him.  And Sampson knew it was probably his last shot to change his reputation too.

For the sake of FAU, let's hope Jarvis is not another Sampson, and that maybe having to sit out for a few years has taught him enough to not go back to his old ways.  But for my part, I would never have taken that chance.  Not after what has gone down at other schools over the past few years.

Wanting to make a splash is well and good... but you'd better make sure there's water in the pool before you jump.

Didn't Bobby Knight tell the FAU Athletic Director who to hire during a recent speech he was making? It was on ESPN. Why would you hire a guy that killed a program like St. Johns?

Hopefully Mike Jarvis learned from the error of his ways in the past.

I like this hire. He sounded committed to making this program a winner, something I do not believe Matt Doherty and Rex Walters were committed to. They wanted to get another chance, have short-term success and move on.

Jarvis is getting another chance. He lives here already. I think people might be surprised by his commitment. He can become a coach to win 100 games at four different institutions.

I think this might be a decent long-term hire and a coach who knows how to get some recruits. I hope that he uses those Northeast connections and familiarity with the schools up that way to mine some gems that his predecessors could not.

I think Matt Doherty just didn't have $300 a month to lure new recruits with.

Hmmm - and to think how many great assistant coaches with ties to clean programs would be a great fit at FAU?  It's not like Jarvis is gonna win in year one.  I can think of a dozen great young assistants with no baggage that you could have, and should have hired.

They could win in 3-4 years.  Are you compromising your university by wanting the quick fix?

Lets see, two outstanding assistants that were hired within the last few years by schools similar in scope to FAU:  Anthony Grant at VCU, and John Pelphrey at South Alabama.  Hmmm, both mentored under Billy Donovan at Florida.  There is where you should have looked for your next coach.

Peace
