Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

Maybe Florida Atlantic couldn't do better than Mike Jarvis.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than a coach who ran St. John's so far underground, the sinkhole will eventually swallow the guy who replaced Jarvis, Norm Roberts.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than a coach who was accused by one of his own players at St. John's, Abe Keita, of helping supply him with $300 a month for three years. The NCAA looked into that, but Jarvis and others refused to fully cooperate, and the NCAA was never able to make that charge stick to him. But still.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than hire an insincere Northeast snob who hasn't coached in three years.

Maybe FAU really couldn't do better than Mike Jarvis.

How sad for FAU.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

This is great news. I hope Mike Jarvis hires: Al Sharpton as bench coach, Tiwana Brawlay as athletic trainer and Don King as inspirational speaker to his bench. I guess u cant ruin an FAU program that was never good. God knows Mike Jarvis took St. Johns University's once very proud basketball program and destroyed it.  Sweet Lou Carnesseca and Chris Mullin should be allowed free smacks at Mike Jarvis' head.

What a country. Maybe we can have Rosie O'Donnell in Playboy next month. Me as president.  Mike Jarivs in college basketball I mean, how many chances can someone get to f-up?  This guy makes Kelvin Sampson look like John Wooden.

Good luck FAU! I mean, good luck on probation, in 5 years, i really meant to say.

This is really disgusting and borderline disturbing that this guy is still around touching and gracing 18 year old kids with his less than adequit persona in NCAA basketball. What are you going ot learn from this guy? To go pro like Eric Barkley? Go pro like Jamel Cook?   If FAU gets even ONE single recruit, i would question the fortitute of those players families as much a i know Jarvis sucks, being a NYC kid and growng up in brooklyn my whole life until i moved to SI recently.. This guy Jarvis is a douche. And that is being mild mannered about it, so i dont get zero's.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

I am a HUGE St. John's fan and do attribute the lion's share of the sad state of the SJU program to Jarvis,  but, folks, this is a good hire.

First, Jarvis is not the slimeball that Doyel claims him to be. Let's be clear, when SJU says that the coaches gave Abe Keita $300 a month behind the curtain as humanitarian aid, they should be believed. Abe Keita was TERRIBLE. There would be NO justification to give him this money for basketball reasons. NONE. He was terrible. God help us he was god awful. This was truly for humanitarian reasons.  I don't condone circumventing the rules...let's be clear about that, too. But this wasn't to get an unfair edge on the court.

Where critics can rightly criticize Jarvis was on the recruting trail.  He stubbornly would not stoop to the level of Jim Calhoun (see the Doug Wiggins saga) or John Calipari (no, John, Lou Carnesseca never did have cancer 20 years ago when you recruited against him at Pitt) and do what he needed to do to get recruits. I actually admire him for that. I don't admire him for being lazy on the recruting trail.

The point is, though, for FAU, he doesn't need to compete against Calhoun or Calipari for top recruits. He can recruit mid-major talent for a mid-major program, and he will coach them well. He did get to an Elite 8 and a 2-seed with Fran Frascilla's players.

Thumbs down to the dim-witted Doyel for once again issuing us a simplistic look into the world of college hoops.

I think Matt DOH-erty will be lucky to make $300 a month after he runs the SMU program into the ground this year, and gets canned.  The guy's win percentage in the conference is .175%.  So dont dont even go there.  Compare Jarvis to someone who actually has success under thier belt.  NINE NCAA apperaances.  NINE.  What's DOH-erty got? One? I don't even know, nor do I care.  Guy is a chump.  No charater chump.  And his "Assistant" is as well (walters).

People are quick to forget about the success that Jarvis had before everything collapsed at St. Johns. He took them deep in the NCAA's and recruited some talented players. He did a very good job before he came to SJU as well when he was coaching at BU and GW. He did not get a bad rep there. He is solely judged from what happened at St. John's. While that program has never fully recovered, is it really fair to put the blame solely on Jarvis? He lost disciplinary control of the team and someone on his staff paid a player. He cannot control the actions of others around him entirely. I understand that he is responsible as the head coach, but should we really think that he hasn't learned from his mistakes? He deserves a second chance. He is a good coach and will probably be able to turn the program around.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

If we can make Jim Valvano a hero after the corruption and ill-doings at North Carolina State, we definitely have room at the table for Mike Jarvis.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

Just read the article and intended to post along similar lines to yours.  While I wouldn't want to see Kelvin Sampson hired by another college program, I'm not concerned by his being hired as an assistant coach by the Milwaukee Bucks.  Different environment, different responsibilities and players at a different stage of life that he will be working with.  While I am uncertain of his moral compass, I don't oppose his being hired by another basketball team where he can use his talent and passion but not pose a threat to the integrity of his team and his players.

I agree, please show me a coach that reformed when given a second chance, Jim Harrick? Tarkanian (still a slimeball), and how about the posterchild for program killing, Kelvin Sampson.

I don't understand this Hire..Jarvis has no recruiting grounds any longer...for a program like FAU, why not try and take a good assistant on a D-1 program or a HC from a Divsion II or III school....or even reach out to a HC from a good girls program...Pat Sutton has a ton of talent on her bench..

Doyel you'd also think that CBS could do better than to hire a wannabe boxer huh? I guess everyone is guilty of bad hires at some point in life.
