Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

Maybe Florida Atlantic couldn't do better than Mike Jarvis.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than a coach who ran St. John's so far underground, the sinkhole will eventually swallow the guy who replaced Jarvis, Norm Roberts.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than a coach who was accused by one of his own players at St. John's, Abe Keita, of helping supply him with $300 a month for three years. The NCAA looked into that, but Jarvis and others refused to fully cooperate, and the NCAA was never able to make that charge stick to him. But still.

Maybe FAU couldn't do better than hire an insincere Northeast snob who hasn't coached in three years.

Maybe FAU really couldn't do better than Mike Jarvis.

How sad for FAU.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

One thing Mike Jarvis CAN DO is RECRUIT, and that is what FAU needs right now! This is a good hire for them. I am a West Virginia fan, and I saw Mike Jarvis at George Washington in the A-10, then I saw him at St. John's. He coached well at GW, and he always recruited well. I do not beleive he was a fit in the Big East Style of play, and let's face it, the Big East has murderers row in coaching right now. (UCOnn, Syracuse, WVU, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, and Pitt are all coached by Hall of Famers or future Hall of Famers). FAU made a good hirre for now because they need quality basketball atheletes, and Mike Jarvis can deliver that, as well as teach strong post play and rebounding. Personally, I felt his weakness was aginst the zone defense offensively, and getting outside shooting. If he does not do well in a couple of years, FAU could hire someone else who is a tactical genius guy but not exactly a recruiter, and that would be a fit becuase Mike Jarvis would have recrited the atheletes. Good Hire, if you look LONG TERM!

How seriously are we supposed to take a writer whose photo for his column is with a skull cap?  Do you do "kill whitey" rap too?

Good luck to FAU.

"....If they hired some new no name coach would we even be talking about this? "

Well, duh, NO!  Considering the who;e column was about FAU HIRING JARVIS, then no, if they hired a new no-name coach, we WOULDN'T be talking about this.......

Jarvis is a crook, a northeastern version of Kelvin Sampson.

I like the hire.  Mike Jarvis will be able to win at Florida Atlantic.  Whether or not what he did at St. John's was right, he was the best candidate available.  There aren't many options left this time of year.  Good luck Mike at Florida Atilantic.

For those of you who think Mike Jarvis is a good hire...please go ask Indiana if Kelvin Sampson was a good hire, and that was at IU where you could actually recruit players. I can only see bad things with this hire.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

I'm not getting the dig on Mike Jarvis, unless he was personally an insincere Northeast snob to you.  I don't know how Florida Atlantic (yes, we're talking about FLORIDA ATLANTIC for cryin out loud) COULD do better.  The guy had as bad a string of luck from bad apple players as anyone in coaching history.  He lost the control he had at BU, GWU, and the first few years at St. John's.  What the heck is wrong with this hire given the history of his record minus the last few years at St. John's?   Did I mention that we are talking about FLORIDA ATLANTIC?

I'm all for giving young assistant coaches a chance...but it's easy to paint a rosy picture when you use only two examples - and wildly successful ones at that.  There are also plenty of examples of assistant coaches from top notch programs that have failed miserably once they were given a head coaching opportunity.  I think the bottom line is that almost any hire that a university like Florida Atlantic is going to make is going to have a lot of inherent risk.  You either gamble on a young assistant coach that few people have heard of, or you gamble on a big name coach who obviously has some baggage...I think it is premature to start casting stones on this one.  Just ask La Salle what it was like to hire a 12-year ACC associate head coach who was coming off of a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP earlier this decade.  Hot shot assistants are no safer bets than retreads, unfortunately.

Osama bin Laden may be a hell of a military leader but I'm still not reccomend that we hire him to lead our US Army troop in Irac!  Being a good coach isn't enough.  Having a good character and developing that in your players is what college sports should be about.  Florida Atlantic is really rolling the dice on this one.  Of course he may have 8 by 10 glossy pictures of the AD with the President's wife.  That would explain it also.

Mike Jarvis? Tell me this is a joke

I have to say I think the real joke is you believing this is a bad hire.

Mike Jarvis is a man who has one in multiple locations (over 100 wins at 3 different schools). He seems to have been blackballed by on bad instance of judgement. To say he should never coach again is going overboard, especially for a proven winner who before that instance was thought of to always run a fairly clean program.

I believe Jarvis can learn from his mistakes. And for FAU this is a no-brainer. His hire gives their program the legitimacy they have been missing. He can be the hire that helps them rise to among the better of mid-majors fighting for an annual NCAA tournament spot. And they should have a motivated coach who looks to remove some of the stain of his last spot and become the first ever coach to win 100+ at 4 different schools.

I agree with Doyel. FAU can do better than this.
