Kill it

Kill the Tour de France. Put it out of its misery. Put cycling out of its misery and kill the whole sport.

Seriously.

Three riders have already been caught cheating through chemistry, including a two-time stage winner of this year's race. And the thing isn't even close to being finished. How many more cheaters are going to get caught?

Better question: How many more cheaters won't be?

After the Floyd Landis debacle and with the general suspicion that cycling is the world's dirtiest sport -- and that's saying something -- these guys still can't stop from cheating. They literally don't think they can compete with clean bodies.

It'll make you wonder about whoever wins -- how did he beat everyone in the field if he wasn't cheating?

Kill the sport. It has lived well beyond its usefulness.

Kill it - absurd

Your "solution" is just silly.  We have seen a string of NFL players suspended (not banned) for performance enhancing drugs in the last few years.  The league's testing, both in terms of quantity and quality, and penalties are amateurish compared to cycling's.  Nobody suggests the NFL should be eliminated or that Tom Brady must be doping to get away from all of the linemen chasing him - or are you?

Even better question:  Will anyone really miss it?

Test this

I'm just curious as to how many athletes in other sports would get caught if the drug testing program was as stringent as the one cycling has.  Part of the reason so many cyclists are caught is that the testing done by those running the sport is the hardest in all of professional sports.  It would obviously be foolish to overlook the fact that you have to be cheating in the first place in order to get caught but just because you don't see one baseball player a day suspended for steroid use does not mean they are clean.

I would love to see the NBA, MLB and NFL use the cycling standards for drug testing and see if they can even finish the season with enough players to play the games.  There is a movement in cycling by the younger generation of riders and team owners to keep doping out of the sport, specifically by recruiting young riders who were not a part of the pervasive doping culture of the last decade or so.  That metamorphasis will help save the sport on the professional level.

The Tour de France, the Vuelta (Spanish tour) and the Giro d'Italia are very prestigious events and will continue to be so, they would be greatly missed should they disappear, not so much in the US but certainly worldwide.

How about no drug testing anything goes.  It will  be an indivdual choice.  I remeber that SNL skit with the steriod olympics and the guy ripped his arms off.

Does it make true sense that pain killers are legal?  Don't they enhance peformanance?  I am sure some people only can participate because of those drugs, what is the difference?

Performance enhancing drugs are vital in these times in which we live.  I know very few people who are able to complete a day at work without some kind of performance enhancing drug, be it caffeine all the way down to anabolic steroids.  I feel sharper and more on top of my game with a bit of juice in my system.  I live in the Phoenix, AZ area, and the big thing out here these days is imported bull shark testosterone, straight from the Pacific shores of Mexico.  It makes me a killer, and you have to have that mentality to get ahead these days.

I don't see what all the fuss is about.

I would not have a problem with them ending the Tour de France.  Nobody in America even watches it anymore, now that Lance Armstrong isn't racing in it anymore, so we probably wouldn't even notice that it was gone anyway.

Doyel, I read your drivel on Sportsline usually to see how foolish you sound and you have topped yourself today.  If you don't like cycling, don't watch it or read about it. There are sports I find pointless and just don't watch.  To each his own.

And nova227 makes a good point--if other sports had such stringent testing as cycling, those sports would be viewed differently and soon cleaned up in earnest.  Cyclists don't have a players' union covering their tail and allowing weak testing to "police" the sport.

How about this instead? Don't take this writer's opinions as anything else but stupidity- seriously.... Doyel, go ahead and write whatever you like, you somehow have achieved that right, by somehow getting this job. Your opinion means nothing and it's obvious that your sole purpose here, is to tick people off, simply to raise attention to yourself and/or this website.   Why don't you just write a book about being a professional whiner?
