Guilty Pleasures...time to come clean boys

Posted on: March 12, 2008 1:59 pm

Now I have to be honest.  I love a good action flick.  And I even like a good horror movie every now and again (different kind of movie, Spitzer!).  But is there anything better than a good ol' fashioned chick flick, filled with Kleenex moments, a plot so thin it makes Kate Moss look bloated, and every stereotype of homely girl meets Prince Charming and they live happiliy ever after as a result of one single longing stare, followed by a searingly  hot kiss that would melt any ice princesses heart, cue the music, and this baby is almost in the can... and cut!!

For me, I love tear jerkers, sad and happy endings, passionate kisses before the credits, cute guys dumping the beauty and the bee itch for the proper girl with the morals (even if the starlet playing the role is on her 3 stint in rehab - this is fantasy here).  I would name the following as some of my favorites:

  1. Titanic
  2. Terms of Endearment
  3. PS I Love You
  4. Pearl Harbor
  5. Hope Floats
  6. Pretty Woman
  7. Unfaithfully Yours
  8. and many more....

Now I want to know from you real men on this board.  Are you closet chick flick lovers or do you just go along so we ladies will think you have a soft underbelly?  I am betting there are some guys who secretly love chick flicks.....sort of a chick flick Rick so to speak.

So what are your favorites boys....don't be bashful....I know you have a soft underbelly.....

tell AV all about it.....

Guilty Pleasures...time to come clean boys

Well, I made a smart a$$ comment and I guess it got wiped.  So I'll come clean and be honest because you deserve an honest answer.

I do enjoy a good soak.  When Nell was in the courtroom and she says, "I play-a ina winnnn".  That choked me up something fierce.

And when Rose let Jack go after three hours into Titanic, I didn't cry, but I did when she threw the diamond into the ocean.  What a waste.

And how could you not cry when Debra Winger dies in Terms of Enderment?  Or Julia Roberts in Steel Magnolia? Or when Ann Hathaway falls of the bleachers in The Pricness Diaries?  That was just funny!  I laughed and cried in that one.

I don't really have a soft underbelly.  Honestly.  I like more action and explosions than tear jerky movies.  My wife goes her seperate ways and watches that crap and I watch mine.  Thats how we have a strong long lasting relationship.

P.S.  I'm joking about Nell.  That choked me up something fierce.

AV I must say that you come up with some origional material and it is pretty funny, not funny enough to show you my BEEF but funny all the same.  I don't think that you are going to get many males to admit to crying to any chick flicks, if you do it is because we can't believe that we got stuck watching this rediculas movie we are only hoping that we will be rewarded for our efforts.  I will admit that I have seen 2-3 of the favorites that you listed and there is a possability that my eyes watered or I got something in them.  But is you want to know what movies might get males welled up you need to look at movies like Rudy, Miracle, and Brian's Song.  AV keep up the great Blogs, you are keeping me entertained.

Guilty Pleasures...time to come clean boys

Don't have any "tear jerker" types that I enjoy.  Wanted everyone dead on "Titanic" (the movie, that is), can't stand Debra Winger, "Pearl Harbor" was a HUGE disappointment, rooting for the hooker was challenging (except v. the Gov. of NY) in "Pretty Woman."

I guess the closest I'll come to guilty pleasures in the non-action / non-adventure / non-guy-comedic genre would be:

"The Quite Man" - The Duke & Mo O'hara were perfect together and went on to make many more films together (most if not all with Ford)
"Home From the Hill" - Robert Mitchum & George Hamilton were perfect for their roles and George Peppard could really act!
"The Philadelphia Story" - Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn & Jimmy Stewart; end of explanation.
"The Thin Man" - William Powell, Myrna Loy & Asta.  You can tell that Nick & Nora have a thing for each other while solving crime.
"Heaven Can Wait" - The only watchable Warren Beatty movie...ever!  Julie Christie was the love interest w/Dyan Cannon as the harpie.

That's all I can come up with on short notice in the semi-huggy/kissy category.

Guilty Pleasures...time to come clean boys

Sorry, no.  My soft underbelly is a product of too much beer, pizzas and sitting on my fat arse watching sports, sports movies and generallly anything with action and explosions.  Any movie that would interest my wife is clearly not a movie that would interest me.  That's how we stay happily married.  She watches her movies, I watch mine.  And we stay clear of each other.

Although I'm not against crying at movies.  Case in point.  "Gus", the one about the football kicking mule???  Just a bad bad movie.  Made me cry and scared of donkeys for a long time.

Guilty Pleasures...time to come clean boys

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind  -  Jim Carrie, Kate Winslet, Kristin Dunst.  A romantic comedy with a twist a guy can appreciate.  Moral:  You can't help who you fall in love with, so don't try.
