Blog Cabin: Giants install drool cup for Mario

In the news...

While making pre-draft evaluations, NFL teams take many things in to consideration. Teams watch tape, measure a player's size and speed, find out about his character and even test his intelligence.

Depending on the team and position, one of these factors may weigh more highly than the others, but in most cases, I would guess that a solid performance in all the categories is the best recipe for a good NFL player.

It’s a good thing that the New York Giants were able to overlook many of those, most notably the mental aspect, when evaluating third-round pick Mario Cashmere Manningham. (Yes, that is his real middle name.)

If you haven’t heard yet, it’s been reported that the big-play receiver out of Michigan was only able to score a 6 on the Wonderlic test. With 20 equating to “average intelligence” and 10 being “literate”, a 6 places Manningham somewhere in the neighborhood of  “Coach, I poopied in my uniform again.”

No, I’m not shocked. Somebody was going to take him, even if he has had a few problems and is a little undersized. This window-licker can catch footballs, after all, and receiver isn’t one of the most mentally demanding positions on the field.

I am a little surprised that he was able to survive three years in college, though. I mean, I know that athletes are “helped” with their grades, but how can you hide a kid that probably can’t spell his own name. How does the NCAA not look in to things any time a player scores below literate? Simply stunning.

I guess that Michigan fans can no longer make fun of the Buckeyes for their allegedly low academic standards.

From the Blogosphere...

Arizona fan naterb is already looking forward to next seasons PAC-10 basketball season. Check out his blog for previews of all the teams.

Does Greg Maddux go to the mound with you in mind? Does Alex Rodriguez step to the plate hoping to give you a helping hand? Ugotabshtnme wonders just how much baseball players think about their fantasy values when they're on the field.

El Gigante starts his team-by-team grading of each NFL team's 2008 draft. Up first: take a look at the AFC East analysis.

I believe the true measure of a man is in his ability to maximize his God given talents. Mario Manningham has tremendous physical ability, and he is persuing a career based on that ability. Nothing wrong with that. There is however something wrong with a journalist who cannot refrain from taking pot shots at a mans intellectual capacity. The real story hear isn't how he got through 3 years at Michigan,we can all figure that out. We should figure out why a man needs a college education to become a proffesional football player anyway. I realize you can be a walk on free agent, but that just doesn't happen without showcasing your talents in college. So get off the guys back ,and try to maximize your journalistic skills with more interesting articles.

It should also be pointed out that it was alleged that Vince Young scored a six on this test as well. Where's his "drool cup," Coulter?

It seems to me that Young has done just fine, which means either the information was incorrect (that would really be a shock) or the test isn't really relevant.

I would like to see a credible source for this "report" that Manningham only scored a 6. Personally, I really don't see where that's anyone's business, and it certainly isn't funny at all - especially if it isn't true.

Nobody knows for sure what this means with regard to Manningham and his academic work at Michigan - but plenty of folks seem eager to accept Coulter's claim as the truth and start bashing for it.

Everyone needs to chill out and get off Mario's back. Okay, he is an idiot and UM let him in their school just to play football, so what. I guarantee you all the big colleges have let morons come to their universities strictly to play sports. Plus, who cares how smart Manningham is? He's not a brain surgeon, he plays football. You can go out and find a kid that failed 4th grade and teach him how to play wide reciever. MM is also very, very good at WR. He made astounding play one after another, but he was deemed stupid so nobody wants anything to do with him. This is not only blastfamy, but also stupid of needy teams that passed Super Mario up because of some test that alledgedly decides whether your a genius or nimrod. How do we even know this "test" is credible or not? I conclude by saying leave Mario alone, let him do his thing, and go on with your lives.

Come on, show a little humanity.  I'm a Michigan State student, so usually I'm all for bashing UM players, but maybe the guy's just not as smart as most people.  The "drool cup" quote crossed the line IMO.  Rip on UM for having low academic standards (as well as ugly women!), but lay off the poor guy - I mean RICH guy.

cheap shot Coulter, cheap shot...

For those of you who are taking pot shots at this kid.  It would be interesting to see what some of you guys would score on this intellectual test.  I would imagine some of you would prime candidates for the short yellow bus.

Great retort to Coulter's Blog, Squarepants.  Manningham's probably no choir boy, but at least he's got the potential for a life better than selling crack on the street corners of Ann Arbor, as a result of his dedication to his craft; which happens to be tackle football.  No one's condoning MM's lack of classroom skills, or getting caught with a pocketful of Non-prescribed Vicodins.  Yes, he most likely could have utilized his time at U. Michigan to hone his intellectual skills a bit.  I agree with you squarepants......Lets give MM a chance to recover some lost ground and may we always sound off at and against posts like Coulters that just seem so "mean spirited".   Coulter, it seems like you were deriving just too much pleasure in your wholesale invalidation of a kid, who really needs a break.  Perhaps you need the "drooling cup" as I could sense you salivating as you moved in for your kill shot on this kid.   There's something awry and amok with that.

It's not all that funny when you consider there is a poor kid that is being used and abused.  Remember Dexter Manley?.

That's why it's called 'dope', dude

As a Michigan fan, i should take offense to this, but it's just too funny ("Coach, i poopied in my uniform again") and pathetic. There's no denying this one. I wonder what Arrington scored, seeing as how he was dumb enough to leave early and didn't get taken til the 6th round? Maybe he didn't appreciate the 'eroding family values' that Rich Rod is responsible for either. Big Blue, be prepared for a Notre Dame-like season this year, it's inevitable
