Chargers season

Posted on: September 14, 2008 8:52 pm
Now that the Chargers' season is officially over, what should the Spanos family do with the laughingstock GM A.J. Smith and the lousy coaching staff?  Another week and another late game blunder by Norv Turnover and Ted "the best Offensive Coordinator any opposting team ever had" Cottrell.  What will be GM A.J. "I take credit for late GM John Butler's moves" Smith's excuse this year? It is a shame that the scouting dept Butler built and franchise players that Butler drafted are being wasted with the pathetic coaches hired by Smith and his massive ego. It has become clear that Norv Turnover is the wrong person to be coaching this team and they need to give Bill Cowher a call and give him total control of the franchise.

Chargers season

As much as i agree with your comments about A.J. Smith  I dont believe your team is done by a long shot. Looking at the rest of your schedual, the bills are the first to catch my eye. The Dolphins just showed the rest of the league the vounerabilities of the pats. So its up to the team to take the same advantage. The only other team I see the chargers worring about is the Colts. Yes they look bad atm. But do you seriously think they will still be this bad by november? Im doubting it. By the time you get around to the tampa bay and bronco games the season will mostly be wrapped up for the afc west no matter what the out come. I see this team rolling up wins and wins equals momentum.

as for norv turner. He has never struck me as a coach that can take over a game.  I still dont believe hes using LT correctly. LT isnt the same as he was with Marty. The defense isnt the same as it was with Wade Phillips as D coordinator. IMHO even if they did release turner and hired Bill Cowher I believe its a year too late. I just dont see norv turner taking this team very far in the playoffs.

Chargers season

C'mon...2 tough losses and that is it...I don't think so.  The Chargers will rebound...too much talent not need to have some faith.  My 7 yr old son's pee-wee football team (North Charlotte Colts) just played a HUGE Arbor Glen Buccaneers team...0 - 0 through regulation... only one 1st down for the Bucs...we won it in over time...6 - 0.  Hang in there Sportsgirl.

Another main difference with the Chargers and the Giants is the Chargers are missing Merriman (which would be like missing Osi) and no one to back him up.  Yes Spags does compensate a bit with Kiwi in there tosses stuff in there that normal defensive coordinators don't.  But when you have an amazing pass rush that the Chargers had last year it made everything so easy an with their DT who is so massive that made it hard to run on them and pass rush made pass defense so much better... now that pass rush isn't there it is in complete dissaray.  Now I don't think a player who is one dimensional is a MVP type of player but Merriman is probably just a different story.  He is so good at causing pressure witht he QB he makes the DB's better 1 sack in 2 games for the Chargers... the 1 by Olshansky, not really meant for sacking the QB.  And with Phillips hurt as well they will have no pass rush not just a smaller pass rush. Cottrell reminds me of our old defensive coordinator, Smith I think his name was from the Steelers... wow he was horrible.  No mixing up anything, disguising it either, just blitz straight up or no blitz at all... it was horrible.

I was all good with your reply until the Denver comment.  Denver is a young team that has a leader for the first time in a long time.  Let's remember that when Elway won his two Rings that the D was not great then either.  The D is good now and is only going to get bette.  Cutler has put the entire team on his back, quit boozing it up, and Shanny has broken out the real playbook now that he has a real QB since Jonny Boy retired.  They will win 10-11 games in D-town and take the division.  Sd is overrated and the lack of Sawn Steriod on D is going to show that this team has no leader right now.

Chargers season

After two big games, the Chargers are 0-2 and Merriman has had surgery. Fear not Charger fan, it is a long season, and I've seen enough of the Chargers to know that by week 14 they will be in the thick of the AFC race, and a team to be reckoned with in the playoffs. Its tough losing to Carolina on the last play of the game; its even tougher when the refs steal one away from you. Losing builds character; and that team needed a little taste of what can happen if they don't put their opponents away. Fear not Charger fan, by the time you go to London, these first two games will have been a memory of what could have been. Denver lucked out after taking a huge lead, only to have the Chargers, behind Darren Sproles, fiercely fight back and take control of the game. Chambers looked great, Gates was involved, and LT is getting healthy.

Your avatar looks like that would be the daughter of Jula Roberts... Like a younger sweeter version, gorgeous either way.  I hate watching the Chargers lose...  They've become one of my favorite teams to watch, mainly because their players are so talented, Cromartie is one of the most physically gifted players I've ever seen, Darren Sproles looks like a Human Race car, Merriman is a monster when he's healthy and you've got explosive WR's, a freak for a tight end, and oh yeah, LT.... All around it gets harder and harder to figure out why they haven't won it all...  But maybe you're right...  All the other pieces are there, maybe it is strictly front office and coaching, cuz everything else seems in place there.  Either way, love the chargers and hope they win it all this year!

Broncos rolling up almost 500 yards of offense. That is just bad defensive coaching and he should be fired immediately. It is clear that Cottrell is clueless in making adjustments during the game and

Bronco fan here.  Yeah, yeah, booo.  Just my 2 cents....

I believe Shannahan going for two would have been nice if it were because he needed to 'earn' that victory, but they talked about it before that drive started, so yes, it was because we've seen our defense get driven on like no one's business of late, and he wanted to enusre that victory because they so deperately needed to beat the Chargers.  Make no mistake, the Broncos want a piece of the Chargers, and Rivers antics last X-mas didn't help matters.

As far as your comments on the Chargers defense, they did make adjustments in the 2nd half.  The Broncos scored 31 in the first half, and only that last TD.  Something definately changed, and they made some adjustments on offense as well, because the Broncos defense couldn't stop Sproles in the second half.  (Don't get me started on our special teams)

I guess the bottom line here is, though you think the Chargers are a vastly superior team to the Brocnos, I wouldn't get as excited about that prognostication as you have been over the last two years.  We tried to tell you that the Broncos dealt with a rash of injuries last season, and of course Cutler's health issues also.  They have a legit pass attack in Jay Cutler's third year, as always productive running game,  and the offiensive line is fixed.   The Broncos are for real, don't feel like the Chargers should be able to roll them easily anymore.

Here's to an interesting divisional race this season!

Chargers season

I'm not going to tell you "I told you so" but the Chargers defense has been abysmal at best. If this continues, then it will be time for Cottrell, Norv and A.J. Smith to go. The Chargers' window of opportunity is closing fast with LT closing in on 30 and if the Spanos family is serious about winning a title, then they have to eliminate Smith's ego and bring in someone like Cowher to take total control. There was a reason why Cottrell was out of the league and no one was calling him when Norv and A.J. came around.
