Derrek Lee for Matt Cain? Is this real?

Posted on: October 12, 2008 9:30 pm

I am sure that by now a lot of you have read the article suggesting that the Giants are looking for three players via trade in particular.  those three being Dan Uggla, Paul Konerko, and Derrek Lee

It goes on to suggest that it would not be beneficial to acquire Uggla since he is one dimensional (i agree).

It also adds that it would probably take one of either Jonathan Sanchez or Matt Cain to acquire either Konerko or Lee.  (i also Agree)

But seriously, would we trade Derrek Lee.  I have been avidly against the idea in the young off season but, Matt Cain is a cy young potential talent.  Acquiring him would free up the money we would be spending on Ryan Dempster to be spent on a replacement (not Micah Hoffpauir).

are there valid replacement available?

well, we are all aware of Mark Teixeira and his talent, but is he a possibility (not really).

who else then?

Rich Aurilia (37)
Hank Blalock (28) - $6.2MM club option for '09 with a $0.25MM buyout
Sean Casey (34)
Tony Clark (37)
Carlos Delgado (37) - $12MM club option for '09 with a $4MM buyout
Nomar Garciaparra (35)
Jason Giambi (38) - $22MM club option for '09 with a $5MM buyout
Eric Hinske (31)
Doug Mientkiewicz (35)
Kevin Millar (37)
Richie Sexson (34)
Mark Teixeira (29)
Daryle Ward (34)

oh wait none of those players are worth signing outside of tex.

oh wait, i doubt the giants would seriously trade cain or sanchez so this entire post was completely hypothetical in the first place.

Derrek Lee for Matt Cain? Is this real?

Let me say I don't think any of those three players is worth Matt Cain, and I don't see any reason why the Giants would do those trades.  Maybe if they were going to get a decent pitching prospect in return too, but not straight up.  The Giants already have two pretty good young prospects who can (and did) play 1B in Pablo Sandoval and Travis Ishikawa.  Lately, it seems like fans (and writers) of other teams feel like Matt Cain is just burning a hole in the Giants' pocket.  He can bring back more than an overpaid, past-his-prime first baseman or a poor fielding second baseman.  He is a potential Cy Young winner, and he's very young and cheap still.  They own his rights for a few more years.  Their future success is being built around their young pitching.  They won't trade Cain for an expensive and temporary upgrade that will be useless to them by the time they are ready to be competitive again.

Derrek Lee for Matt Cain? Is this real?

we don't have anyone in our farm system

Seriously. The best Cub prospect we have at 1b is Rebel Ridling. And we drafted him last year. Hell the best in organization option at 1st that's not named Micah, may be Geovany Soto (with Wellington Castillo catching).

But I don't really see a need to trade for starting pitching.

Derrek Lee for Matt Cain? Is this real?

I've always be a fan of Derrek Lee.  I think he is a great defensive 1st baseman, a perenial gold glover, but his bat has been letting us down.  He grounded into a career high number of double plays, and his power hasn't been seen since his broken wrist in early of 2006.  If we do trade him, we have to get top value.  We won't be able to find a viable replacement off the scrap heap.  Unless Micah Hoffpaur is overlooked, we don't have anyone in our farm system.  Derrek Lee is still needed on this team.  He shouldn't be batting third, but he should still be in a Cubs uniform.

Aramis Ramirez had a down year too...Should we give up on him as well???
