It's been a while!- Favorite Past Announcers...

Holy Smokes Fellas! It's been a while! I looked and i haven't made a post in over a month! I've recently bought a house and started remodeling it so that's been taking up alot of my time. Sorry to have fallen off the face of the earth.... onto my topic...

What your guys favorite Sports announcer(s), past or present. Being a Vol fan, it doesn't get better than John Ward. He's got so many lines that i can hear in my head, it's crazy. Also, does anyone know where to find some of his quotes in mp3 or wav format. I found one site but the one i want is where, right after we won the title in '98, he says, "This year, the National Champions are clad in big orange."

Glad to be back to routine.

Go Vols!

The way John Ward went out was amazing, the football team, calling the National Championship and everything!

Yeah, i agree. Even in the mid to late 90's, right before he retired, we'd be watching the game and listening to him call it on the radio. It was worth the time delay just to hear Ward call it. He'll be remembered forever.

Yeah, I gotta second you on John Ward. I remember back in the day when few games were on tv and we would listen to the games on the radio. Nobody can get you fired up and the heart pumping like John Ward. He would be counting down the runner to the end zone (35,30,25,20,15...etc) while all the while they have the field goal unit out on the field getting ready to kick the extra point. I think my favorite comment came when he said, "Yes sir.....Willie Gault, ladies and gentlemen, is running all the way to the state capital." There is nobody in sports that I have heard that can just give you chills with their commentary like John. Man, I miss that guy.

It's been a while!- Favorite Past Announcers...

Welcome back.

Growing up in Tampa Bay, we never really had a lot in the way of traditional sports with long-time announcers, so I have to go more for camp in my reply.  The Buccaneers currently have Gene Deckerhoff doing the play-by-play (God love him he is the voice of my Seminoles, as well) and he has gone through gobs and gobs of analysts over his time there.  The one that was my favorite was during the lean years of the creamsicle (Vols fans can relate) orange, Jesse Ventura.  Yep, the former wrestler.  Yep, the former Governor of Minnesota.  It was between these two gigs that he provided some of the best entertainment fans of Bucko Bruce could ask for.  He was frank, truthful and oh so colorful.  He had a very limited background in football, so made up for it by bringing former players, wrestlers and entertainers into the booth to liven things up.  Every once in a while he'd even call Deckerhoff "Mean Gene."

Growing up in NY, nothing beat watching a ballgame and listening to Messer, White and The Scooter. I actually met Frank Messer once, at a hotel up in the Catskills when I was a kid. He was a real nice guy.
