Tournament talk....

The big dance is only a month away.  What team(s) do you not want to see on your side of the bracket?  What teams scare you... if any?  What do you guys think about Duke's win at North Carolina?  Do you think Memphis is the real deal?  What about a team like Butler?  Can they make another run this year?  Is the BIG 10 as bad as they look?  What about the PAC 10?  Are they as physical as they looked last night in the UCLA game?  What sleeper teams are going to peak?  UCONN?  Kentucky?

Selection Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year.  I can't wait to see all the possible matchups!  Some I would love to see are:

Kansas State and Indiana:  Eric Gordon against Michael Beasley would be amazing!  I think they would both score 40+ in that game!

Kansas and North Carolina:  I know all Kansas fans would love to see this game in the final.  Roy Williams against Kansas!  I can see the press conference now... Roy crying like a baby... saying how he never wanted to play against Kansas!

Memphis against Duke: I think this game would be very entertaining!  Lots of 3's and great guard play.  Could Derrick Rose handle the pressure as a freshman?

Tennessee against Butler:  Coach Pearl knows all about Butler going back to his days at UW-Milwaukee.

This years tournament is going to be a great one!  I can't wait!

Tournament talk....

Selection Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year.

One of mine too! :) I think Kentucky could play their way in and be a sleeper team to sneak into the tourney. They seem to have figured out each other, especially since they beat my Vols. I'd love to play Kansas, REC21, to be honest with you. I think that would be a heck of a ball game. Maybe that can happen in the FF. Can't wait till it all pans out!

Go Big Orange!

Tournament talk....

You're right, maestrojpl, it has a tremendous history dating back to before the Civil War.  The guy I was talking to mentioned that too.  I asked him besides this year's football match-up, when did the rivalry really matter in football or basketball on a national level.  Not surprisingly, he wasn't able to come up with anything.

It's funny how one school can feel another is their most hated rival, while the larger, more-established school dismisses the smaller.  I went to K-State (Manhattan) on a recruiting visit and let's just say I didn't think much of the area.

The ACC is the darling of ESPN for a couple of reasons:
    Long-established rivalries
    Eastern Time Zone
    Consistent high-quality programs
    Great fan support

I would say that KU/MU is much more than a basketball rivalry though.  It is a genuine hatred (mostly by MU fans toward KU) that dates back to the Civil War.  Free State vs. Slave State and it has been contentious ever since.

I lived in Kansas City for about 10 years and am married to a Jayhawk and I would say that it is definitely a big deal.  Much bigger than KU vs K-State IMO.  I think that K-State feels that KU is a rival much more than vice-versa, and if you asked Kansas fans who their most hated rival was they would say MU.  If you ask an MU fan who their biggest rival is they will say something like F-in KU or The Gayhawks/Chickenhawks.

The BCS selection of Kansas this year did nothing but throw a huge amount of fuel on this fire.  MU fans were/are pi$$ed and want to blame KU for somehow making that happen.  Lew Perkins called the BCS selection committee and promised to buy all the tickets and other conspiracy theories.

Does KU/MU compare to Duke/UNC... not a chance.  There are many reasons for this...

  1. Mizzou has not be at the top of the BIG XII in years.
  2. KU also has KSU as a rival
  3. Duke and UNC have played eachother 6 times when both teams have been in the top 3... not sure this has ever happened for KU/MU
  4. ESPN loves the ACC!

KU and Mizzou have played some really great games... but I think your buddy is off his rocker!

REC21, Is the KU / Missouri that big a deal?  I know it really mattered in football this year, but normally it's not that huge a deal nationally.

Had some guy trying to equate it to Duke / UNC.  Is it in the neighborhood to you 'Hawks & Tigers?

I agree with your comments about Paulus.  He reminds me of a player at Kansas back when I was a student.  Jerod Haase.  He played his butt off every game.  But, when his shot was not falling... he killed you!

Ultimately, though, Paulus will find a way to mess it up for the Devils in the Four or Eight.  Kid's more erratic than Kramer on Seinfeld.I said the same thing to my buddy here at work who's a Duke fan. . .Paulus may win you a game, but he can shoot you out of a lot of games. . .

Dukies take it to 'em at Chapel Hill.  Darned place is right across the street, yet the atmosphere is sooooooo contentious.  Ultimately, though, Paulus will find a way to mess it up for the Devils in the Four or Eight.  Kid's more erratic than Kramer on Seinfeld.

Crossing my fingers for the Noles to somehow win 4 or 5 more games to get in the Tournament.  This is a problem KU & UT don't have.  18 or 19 wins will guarantee any ACC team entre.  How 'bout a little karma from the bloggers?
