Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

Posted on: August 24, 2008 4:22 am

The basketball gold medal game was stunning, the officials absolutely awful but in the end the Redeem Team lived up to its name.

It wasn't their best night. The Americans at times played defense with the intensity of a Sunday afternoon jogger.

This game will go down as one of the top five in Olympic basketball history and Spain deserves a great deal of credit for taking the Americans to the limit.

Still, overall in these Olympics the Americans were spectacular, particularly Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. They enabled you to root for USA basketball again, they rebuilt our image, and they mostly handled themselves with class and dignity. If you can't be proud of what they did -- and the women as well -- then you're more cynical than I am. Which is impossible.

While these Olympics will be remembered for Michael Phelps what the basketball team did was far more impressive. Yes. Far more.

The reason why is pressure. If Phelps had earned five gold medals instead of eight he wouldn't have been called a failure.

If the United States won a silver or bronze the players would've been treated like total losers. They'd be called embarrassing. Media and fans would be screaming for massive changes.

The world and many people in this country waited for the Redeemers to fail so everyone could wag their fingers and portray the Americans as street ballers incapable of playing the precision International game.

You don't think the Americans knew this? You don't think they felt this pressure and it didn't weight on their chests like Shaquille O'Neal's backside?

Phelps had only Mark Spitz to worry about. The basketball team was fighting the failures of the recent past as well as our cynicism.

It's late on the East Coast and the game just ended. My eyes are barely open but I'm nevertheless giddy. Actually, I'll say it, as corny as it sounds, I'm proud as hell.

Without these two idiotic lines in your story, you had a pretty decent story going there.  Maybe you should have slept on it before writing it.  Praising the play of the Redeem team is just fine.  With the exception of the gold medal game they dominated throughout these Olympics, but since we probably had 7 or 8 of the worlds best 10 players on our team, wouldn't you expect them to win gold?  How can you compare what should be a given to an athlete who breaks 7 different world records in a span of 9 days?  And an Olympic record 8 gold medals.  If you show this story to the Redeem Team, they'll all be rolling on the floor laughing themselves!  I saw several interviews with USA basketball players and every one of them mentioned how Phelps was a "must see" at the games.  Many of the members of the Redeem Team had spells during the games where they were off of their game.  Phelps wasn't afforded that luxury.  In a number of the events he won, the runner-up also broke the old world record.

You really should have put more research into Michael Phelps accomplishments before publishing such rubbish.

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

Put down the pipe Freeman. Phelps 8 GOLD, Redeem Team 1 GOLD. No contest Phelps was a bigger story hands down. What we pick the best in the leauge to play for us & the last time they were any good was the original Dream Team 1992? The only thing they were fighting was there own ego's. Yes we use to be better than the rest of the world at this game but now the rest of the world is getting better at our game. I say bring back the college players, maybe 1 or 2 rookies from the leauge & let them shine on the world stage. 36 years it took for someone to catch Mark Spitz that's a story my man. I congratulate Spain for making the Redeem Team earn that gold medal. That alone is a story how much the world of basketball is catching up to the USA's game of Basketball. Not only are you corny but your full of it.

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

Sorry about that but the Redeem Team wasn't a better story than Micheal Phelps the man win 8 gold medals even the redeem team got a chance to see it too not even better than THE Mens U.S. Volleyball
;Team who wasn't  suppose to win any medal got the gold. Now talking about  the Redeem Team don't compare this team with the dream team , the 84 squad, the 76 squad, the 60 sqaud,2000 squad, the 96squad and yeah oh yes the 56 squad, but give all the praise for the 2008 US Squad but they are not a top five in US OLYMIPIC HISTORY, but they do got a plan the US Basketball Committee did a GOOD job on this keep it up and WE will continue to win THE GOLD MEDAL PEACE. USA

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

I agree with everything slackers just wrote above.  Please, Mike, defend your position and stop namecalling.  I'm getting embarrassed on your behalf.

Cheers.

Mike the challenge stuff aside, you could actually go back and look at bong's initial post and respond to some of the points in argument.  I mean would it really kill you to do so?

You've spent a lot of time and effort in responding to his posts without actually saying anything of any substance.  You attempt to belittle him with name calling, and mocking.  Something you would consider juvenile if a poster were doing it to you, I would assume.

He simply disagreed with the statement in your blog.  Instead of backing up your blog entry or explaining where you are coming from in your original sentiment you attacked.

So he went and made a challenge to you, which you have ignored with the exception of using it in an attept to mock him, big deal.  Forget the public challenge.  Just answer the points he brings up.  People are obviously interested in a debate on the subject.

I don't see how mocking the members of the community in any way helps your position.  I mean the Canadian comment, really.  What good do you think that did your position?

Say what you want, If you believe in what you say, defend your position.  Just do it with some class and substance.  You can attack my grammer, spelling, and punctuation if you wish, I don't cliam to be a writer.  I do hope that you get the message I'm trying to put forth.  That message is that you as a professional sports writer, and representative of CBSSports should have the ability and the want to defend your position in a manner that is factual, unoffensive, and professional as most of the other CBS writers manage to do.  If you feel it is beneath you to defend your own position to the community of members who you write for and to, then perhaps you are in the wrong line of work, or are in it for the wrong reasons.  If you have no respect for the people you write for, how long do you really think they will continue to read and respond to what you write?

Cheers, Mike.

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

Hello Everyone: Bong here again. Cheers to the world! Please wait one moment. I have to refresh my browser to see if Freeman responded to me so I can feel better about myself since my entire being is tied into whether he responds to me. Also, I have to run to the cupboard and get my exclamation points, since all of my posts have at least 20!!!!!!

I'm also extremely fond of the following: LOL, ROTFL, LMAO and OMG. Ohmygod!!!! More exclamation points!!!

I also truly enjoy repetition and quoting other posters ESPECIALLY the ones who agree with me. Thank you all!!! Cheers!!! You like me, you really like me!!!!

!!!!!!

Oh, wow, Freeman just responded. Gotta go. Gotta repeat my request for a writing "competition" for the 8,278th time!!!!

Only 10,000 more mentions of a writing "competition" to go!!! Woo hoo!

And have I mentioned I challenged Freeman to a writing competition!!!!

Cheers!!!!

PS Is there any material other posters want to lend me since I'm running out of original things to say!!!!!

If so you can contact me at lowselfesteem.com or I-need-approval-from-others-to-feel

-good-about-myself.net
