Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

The basketball gold medal game was stunning, the officials absolutely awful but in the end the Redeem Team lived up to its name.

It wasn't their best night. The Americans at times played defense with the intensity of a Sunday afternoon jogger.

This game will go down as one of the top five in Olympic basketball history and Spain deserves a great deal of credit for taking the Americans to the limit.

Still, overall in these Olympics the Americans were spectacular, particularly Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. They enabled you to root for USA basketball again, they rebuilt our image, and they mostly handled themselves with class and dignity. If you can't be proud of what they did -- and the women as well -- then you're more cynical than I am. Which is impossible.

While these Olympics will be remembered for Michael Phelps what the basketball team did was far more impressive. Yes. Far more.

The reason why is pressure. If Phelps had earned five gold medals instead of eight he wouldn't have been called a failure.

If the United States won a silver or bronze the players would've been treated like total losers. They'd be called embarrassing. Media and fans would be screaming for massive changes.

The world and many people in this country waited for the Redeemers to fail so everyone could wag their fingers and portray the Americans as street ballers incapable of playing the precision International game.

You don't think the Americans knew this? You don't think they felt this pressure and it didn't weight on their chests like Shaquille O'Neal's backside?

Phelps had only Mark Spitz to worry about. The basketball team was fighting the failures of the recent past as well as our cynicism.

It's late on the East Coast and the game just ended. My eyes are barely open but I'm nevertheless giddy. Actually, I'll say it, as corny as it sounds, I'm proud as hell.

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

I liked Usain Bolt's story better than Michael Phelp's. Give Usain Bolt as many chances to win gold as that nerd Phelps had, and Bolt would win them all too.

The most impressive thing about Phelps & the Basketball team is one thing....TEAM!  What they accomplished as a Team.  Labron & Kobe were great, but what about Wade, Bosch, Paul...without them, especially Wade in the final, we do not win.   What would we all be saying if Jason Lezak did not catch the arrogant Frenchman at the relay & Phelps only got 7 golds...would he had been a failure?  No...but it allows us to celebrate the TEAM   the same way we celebrate the Basketball Team.

What has always made this country great is how we bind together for a common goal...both the Swimming & Basketball TEAMS did this..go USA!!!

Proud American

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

(Cut away to an employee break room at CBS Sportsline or whatever Mike Freeman says it's called now)

Freeman:  Hello, Greg Doyle!  My but you're looking dapper today!

Doyle:  Why thanks, Mike!  What's going on?

Freeman:  Well, I can tell you that my blog today had a TON more hits on it than yours did!

Doyle:  Well, yeah, but your blog was sophomoric and your responses made you look like an idiot.

Freeman:  Yeah, but...........did I tell you that my blog today had a TON more hits on it than yours did?

Doyle:  Yes, but you never once gave any kind of lucid response to the points brought up by Bong and the boys.

Freeman:  but...but...I'm sure you heard that my blog today had a TON more hits on it than yours did!

Doyle:  Mike, let me plagiarize something for you, since you seem to understand how to communicate that way.  Mr. Freeman, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Freeman:  Thanks, Greg.  I'm gonna go back and see how many more hits I've had.

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

Legionx hits the nail right on the head.  To mention the "Redeem Team" in the same sentence with Michael Phelps (or even the Dream Team) is a freemanesque joke.  Let's see... Phelps won eight golds, broke seven world records, and did so against deep and talented fields in every race.  The Redeem Team got their gold by... barely beating a bunch of white guys from Spain.  Whoop dee doo, are we supposed to be impressed?  Forgive me if I don't go into a patriotic chest thumping frenzy on this one.

Now the men's volleyball final against Brazil -- that's a story worthy of some serious ink, as well as some serious pride in the red, white and blue.

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

Phelps was FAR more impressive then the basketball win. If Phelps had won 5 gold medals we all would feel bad for him. He was going for something that nobody had ever done before and won more gold medals then any olympic athlete. Basketball?? They were just doing something they should do every year...

Basketball is terrible. First off we have all pro's on our team and other teams have what 1-2 pros? The USA is supposed to win every year and honestly if they got bronze or silver I wouldn't have cared. Basketball had more pressure?? It was a new team with different players and they were winning games with ease there was no pressure for them till maybe the gold game...Imagine the pressure Phelps felt. Every race (sometimes 2 in a day) he had to deal with an insane amount of pressure. Winning his first 2 events including the relay where the french were guranteed to win!

Anybody can pick up a basketball and play basketball. Not everyone can jump in a pool and swim and swimming is a much harder thing to do. Most the Americans players played what 10-15 min then sat the rest of the game for subs, subs that are All-stars.

I think the Basketball Gold was big for you because you probably enjoy it more than swimming but in my opinion and i would venture to say most americans opnions would say Phelps was a greater achievement than the basketball win. It is simple in my mind...8 gold medals, 6? world records, the french upset, most golds for a single olympian...i dont see how thats greater then a a bunch of all star basketball players beating up on lowsy basketball teams from other countries...

Freeman has lost it.

All I can say is Freeman has lost his mind.  Phelps was the biggest story of the olympics by far.  Get your head examined.

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

You could say Wade outplayed Kobe all you want but you forgot to mention who had just been to a full 82 NBA long season and played in 21 playoff games, dislocated finger in his shooting hand and all. Wade was resting all this time. Did he look fresh? Of course. Was he the hero at the end of the game? As much as it bites you in the ass he was. It does not matter if the 3 pointers were good or bad shots. When you have the balls to take those shots in the clutch is what matters. He's been clucth always. Wade and Lebron were dominant but without Kobe they don't win the gold. They already failed twice and embarrased us all. Don't give me the shit that they didn't play enough in those past tournaments. Who was more interested in redeeming themselves? Wade and Lebron. Kobe always steps it up a notch when his team needs him. He just showed it again in the biggest stage and all you can say replace Kobe with Wade? Please dude don't be a moron. There is a reason why he's a starter in front of Wade and why they call him the best player in the world and just because in the US there is a lot of haters that doesn't mean he is not more popular that your Wade and Lebron. There is a reason why his Jersey sells more than anybody else, that is talent. Take off your blindfold and admire basketball, don't hate the player, hate the game.

Redeemers Better Story than Phelps

Honestly, the NBA all stars beat Spain...freakin' SPAIN....whooo hoooo.  Winning when you are supposed to win isn't a great accomplishment.  Our NBA/USA teams of the past few years have been lazy, selfish and one dimensional.  Uhm...sounds like the NBA...what a surprise.  What Phelps did will go down in Olympic history as one of the greatest achievements.  The basketball team...big deal....the varsity beat the jv team.  Freeman is a brotha' homer.  Give the white boy his props mush mouth.
