Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of DUI and there is lots of glee, it seems, on message boards and across cyberspace.

If you are happy about this, it actually says more about you as a person, than it does Barkley.

If he did this, he should be put in jail. Drunk drivers are a plague.

However, what's equally troublesome is the reaction of people. There are many, it seems, who want Barkley to greatly suffer and their desire for these things has nothing to do with his alleged act. They want him to burn for his views and are utilizing this arrest as a window to attack him.

These people have brought race into this conversation where it didn't exist and that tells you a lot.

So when you're posting about Barkley don't hide your disgust behind fake outrage. Just say you're happy he was arrested because you don't like him or his views.

it seems a lot of people are commenting that barkley is a racist. what am i missing?? could someone help me understand what he has said or done to earn such a serious label? a quick google search of "barkley racist" only brings up the whole auburn/turner gill thing and that has nothing to do with barkley himself being a racist. he was accusing his auburn, his alma mater, of being racist.

furthermore why would a respected network like tnt employ someone like barkley for so many years if he truly was openly racist?

yes he may have (or had) a serious gambling problem, and he made a serious error in judgement with the dui, but racist?? come on. if you're going to make that claim, then you better back that up.

i give freeman credit. he speaks his mind, agree or disagree with him as you may. but at least he presents his views without making unfounded claims like some of his readers tend to do.

Do we really have to have this convo again?

Anyways, here goes nothin-

CHARLES BARKLEY IS OPENLY RACIST! How can you not see that!  And the white man that criticizes him is the racist? You have some very messed up views man.

The only time the race card is EVER brought up is by black people. And the ONLY reason you do play the race card is the whole slavery thing. African- American journalist are the plague, they spread hate by bringing race into everything-" This coach didnt get this job because hes black- that coach got it because hes white.- That guy got fired because hes black."  Have you ever thought, that just maybe, these African American candidates were not qualified for the job? Do the research, bro. After you do, you cant possibly disagree with me. And if you do, you have not evolved from your upbringing. Which is sad, because you are in a profession where YOU HAVE TO BE NEUTRAL.

Its never gonna end- were gonna have another bonehead journalist bring up this subject in a week. Its a vicious cycle that has to stop

Hello J:

1. I never used the word misfortune. Don't know why you have it in quotes.

2. Having an opinion is not patronizing. The fake outrage you state, however, is.

3. The fact you put Barkley in the same sentence with a terrorist dirtbag who murdered thousands of innocent Americans proves my point entirely.

Happy New Year.

I'm happy he was arrested because he spit on an 8 year old girl during an NBA game. He's trash.

Barkley's misfortune? Don't patronize us Freeman.  Barkley is a hypocritical ahole.  There's nothing wrong with enjoying in the follies of aholes, especially aholes in the public eye like Barkley.  Would you be chastising us if we were all in glee if we found out Bin Laden suffered a prolonged, painful, horrible death?  Barley obviously isn't nearly as big of an ahole as Bin Laden, but getting caught isn't nearly as bad as a horrible death, so the scale between the aholiness and "misfortune" is comparable.  You really need to stop patronizing your readers, it's like biting the hand that feeds you.

Get a clue Freeman. Barkely is a blowhard. People either love him or hate him. Those that see him as more of a buffoon than anything (I'm not sure what camp I'm on, but this one has evidence to back up their claim) probably feel this is some sort of karma. While it's never becoming to take joy in another's suffering, if you're going to do it, a spoiled, rich athlete that intentionally gets his mug in the media when he can isn't a bad one to do it on.

I know this is going to come as a shock, but race is still an issue in our country. Barkely brings it up a lot and he's inevitably been considered someone that is tied to the issue of race. So if he gets in trouble in a situation that traditionally raises eyebrows about profiling, add that with Barkley's statements on race, don't act shocked and offended when posters bring up race. I'm quite sure if Raja Bell got pulled over, you wouldn't see the same posts. Think about it.

People did not bring up the race thing because Charles was arrested for drinking and driving. It was brought up because of his quite frequent use of playing the race card himself. He is every bit as racist himself as any redneck sportin a white sheet and hood, but since he is a black man we as white people are supposed to listen to his non-sensical ramblings and think to ourself "what an enlighted individual we are privledged to be listening to". Well! I believe most people are sick of him (and those like him). I think most white people in America would love to see racism dissappear all together, but I also believe that is just a fantasy because their will always be race baiters out there trying to find the easy way to the top by using the color of their skin to make others look racist.
