Will Jim Tressel Choke Again?

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It was an impressive scene. Jim Tressel's Ohio State Buckeyes had just been obliterated by LSU in the national title game. The following morning, at the airport in New Orleans, the Buckeye coach was waiting for a flight. Ohio State fans approached Tressel and asked for autographs. He gladly signed. They wanted pictures taken with him. He happily obliged.

No, it wasn't just an impressive scene, it was an incredible one. Because you knew Tressel had to be hurting inside. Badly. Yet he still signed and smiled and obliged.

Tressel had a classy moment but it doesn't obscure a simple fact: recently, for the most part, his Buckeyes have been terrible in big games. Stinky on top of ugly.

So it's not unfair to say that Tressel desperately needs this Fiesta Bowl game against Texas. He needs a victory as badly as any coach in college football has in a long, long time.

After blowout losses to Florida and LSU by a combined score of 79-38 another horrid performance will put Tressel's legacy at stake (if it already isn't). A win would at least temporarily stem the pain and criticisms of him as a big game failure.

He's got to win, he must win.

79-38.

Another bad loss would cement the notion of Tressel critics that his one title was lucky and he's less John Coltrane and more like John Cooper.

If he can beat the Longhorns taking pictures with fans the next day will be even more fun than normal.

Will Jim Tressel Choke Again?

Wow, szabes22, did you really bother to put up a comment that basically said nothing other than to make a snap judgment on my fanhood?  You dont know what I put ahead of what.  I was simply pointing out that the Big Ten is taking a ridiculous amount of critisizm and it's probably not good for Iowa to  either if the rest of the Big Ten loses.

Seriously, were you dumb enough to get make the comment "at least he isnt putting the accomplishments of his conference ahead of his own team"?

Yes, you were that stupid.  Rooting for the rest of the Big Ten to win their bowl games is NOT BY ANY MEANS putting the Big Ten ahead of the Buckeyes you sack of crap.  Dont pick fights when you dont even bother to pay attention to the sport.

The real choke artist is that non-tackling sumbich that let Crosby score the winning Texas TD.  Blown coverage + Missed tackle = L.

Whatever the cause, Ohio State just can't get it done in a big spot.  Colt McCoy 41-58 414 yds, 2 TDs + 1 rushing TD.

Hey malonerob,

Not arguing with you- I'd just wouldn't say all that around the Woody Hayes fans- but I gotta admit, Tressel never triped a guy returning a kickoff.

You are right- Tressel is more than most colleges even wish they had for a program (and being at OSU- doesn't hurt any)

Will Jim Tressel Choke Again?

I would like to think you could put some credance to my answer here- because I;m not an Ohio St fan. Tressel hasn't really given any indication of having choked or that he has any intention of doing so.  His impecable record in the Big 10 speaks for itself, and you may not be the best team in the Nation to be #1 at the end of the year- but you certainly don't "luck" into it.

He needs this win, only because 3 big loses in a row -LOOK REALLY BAD-

If you want to judge a good team and a good coach- forget their record or where they are in the polls- just ask one simple question- IF THE CHAMPIONSHIP was on the line---WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY THEM? USC almost didn't make it to the Rose Bowl- so who would you be most scared of playing USC or anybody from Oregon.

Being that Texas was at the top spot and is still trying to make a point about the Title belonging to them because of the "I beat hm" theory- this is as big a win situation for Ohio State as it was when they played for the National Championship game, because depending on the outcome tonight and the next couple days- If FLorida doesn't win impressively, --- gonna be a lot of people claiming that top spot regardless of "BCS".

Take away all the intangebles of the game-, the unexpected turnovers, the injury list, who partied to late pre-game and you have individual performaces and styles of the game,  The Big 10 was always know for having BIG BIG teams, huge lineman and trmendous running games. The PAC 10 was epitomized by speed and flashy tailbacks. The SEC was the speedy Defence, The Big 12 was HIgh powered offences, the Pure thowing QB's that get hundreds of TD passes, vrs the all-around running QB that is the constant threat (but who also has trouble being a QB in the NFL)  And who ever wins the big games- that style all of a sudden becomes the best way to build a team for the next year. Bottom line is that no matter how good any team is, they don't alway match up well with one of the other sytles. Conferences tend to identify with one particular style so the best of that style wins their conference.  The teams that try to break the mold usually can committ to a complete tranformation because they don't have the manpower to make it work (after all- that;s not the way they recruited 3 years ago)- so they are unsuccessful in dethrowining the powerhouse team.  SO - here you have Ohio State (Jim Tressel teams that have had to face two teams that they didn;t match up good against- One because of the team composure (LSU- which definitel looked completely unlike Ohil St or any team they played during the year, and one year because Vince Young was a QB like they never saw before )

So if you're wonderring about the picture taking- remember it was the winner that wanted to get their picture taken with Tressel not the other way around- Who commanded that respect?

Will Jim Tressel Choke Again?

They are 10 1/2 point underdogs. They are expected to get whooped. How would anyone suggest he choked by doing what's expected? What kind of fool would use that kind of logic in his thinking process when writing a published artile? Coach Tressel has a resume that most coaches would sell their soul to the devil to have. He runs a clean program and sends numerous players to the NFL. His number of first round picks during his tenure is certainly in the top two or three. And, he does that with players usually far less thought of than those coming out of high school and going to the likes of USC, LSU, and Florida. People who put him down are simply jealous haters. Nothing more, nothing less. You go Tress, you go boy.

Will Jim Tressel Lose Again?

I expect that freeman will recycle this article w/ Stoops' name in it tomorrow.  While losing sucks anytime - losing in BCS bowl games suck a lot less than losing in the regular season to crappy teams.  OU  and Stoops "need to win", but I'll take the 1999 and on Sooners, bowl loses and all, over the Sooners of the 1990's.  OU and OSU keep showing up toward the top and w/ parity of tallent being what it is today - no one can win them all every year.  That's a lot better than most, even if they lose tonight.

...Yeah, wego, thus allowing the rest of the country to point out what a fluke your bowl win was because our conference is so weak.  Straighten up those priorities, buddy.

While I don't understand how losing a game you're expected to is choking, at least he puts his team's accomplishments above those of conference, unlike certain people around here.

And to wego, Texas makes S Carolina look like a d1aa school.  An interesting matchup would have been S Carolina v Wis, since neither team as a QB.

Tressel will choke and the Buckeyes will lose, thus making the Hawkeyes the only big ten team to win this year in the bowl games. Ha.

GO HAWKS!!
